Title: My vox = Scratchy and quiet?
Post by: EskimoJoe on January 11, 2011, 11:20:25 AM
Wondering what's going on with my vox. Previously (within the past month and a half) my vox was
working normally, and I was coming through loud and clear. Unfortunately, something must have
changed while I took a relatively short break from the game. My vox now comes through very quiet,
and scratchy. It almost seems as if there's some sort of static kind of noise.

I have double checked all my settings. My mic volume is boosted to max on the desktop, and my
mic volume is at max in-game. I have no volume setting on my headset, there is no mute button.

Could my cheapo headset be faulty? I doubt it could be settings or hardware related. I have a
relatively "new" e-machines computer, works decently for what I need it to do.

I will post my dxdiag if needed. Worth noting, this would be my first dxdiag. Let me know if I miss something,
I have a strong feeling that I will.

I would suspect the mic first.  Do you have another one to test with?

Is it connected to the sound card, or is it USB based?
If it is connected to the sound card, are you sure you got it plugged into the correct port?
Did you check in the game Options->Preferences->Game Sounds panel and make sure the correct device, for the microphone is selected?

Have you tested it with the Windows sound recording and playback control panel thingy?  Does it sound good there but not in the game?

I just tested it with the windows sound recorder. Playback sounded like it was potentially crystal clear, but very
very quiet with a constant static sound laid ontop.

I do not have another mic. I'm not hardware savvy, but I would be led to believe that it is connected to the sound
-card. It is plugged in (pink plug) to my front panel (pink plugin). It was worked perfectly before. I would like to
note that in-game vox and windows recording still work. I'll check my game sounds panel.

After brainstorming, I think I might have a possible solution dealing with Realtek HD Audio Manager.
*After doing a hefty amount of testing, I found that Realtek might be the source of my problem. I adjusted the
recording volume at different levels, and found that when I set it to max (100%) the amount of static is also
at the maximum amount, however my voice still comes in much quieter than desired. When I enable the "noise
suppression" option, the static is near-eliminated, however there is a weird noise that is more background oriented.

Odd. I wonder if removing the realtek audio manager from my system processes would affect voice in-game. The
only downside I see in that, realtek has audio equalizer options that makes, well, audio much better sounding for
my ears. Will give it a shot.

EskimoeJoe, which Windows OS are you using

to me ( my view ), WinXP is totally different in setting up mics than with Windows 7

some people actually have to check "mute" on their mics in WindowsXP and also uncheck the db boost, while others have to leave the mic unmuted and checkbox the mic boost on WinXP systems..... or  a mixture of these settings....... then with Windows 7 it is completely different, and if you inadvertently check "What You Hear" can mess you up....... if you have updated drivers, the driver update could have re set your mic / sound card settings as well......

just some suggestions

best of luck to you

If the mic boost/gain is too high, it can also cause static due to oversaturation of the mic input.

I'm using Vista (aaaaahhh!)

If the mic boost/gain is too high, it can also cause static due to oversaturation of the mic input.
I'll try lowering the boost.

I've been a bit busy the past few days, got around to testing out my mic again. It works fine on
the desktop now. I haven't changed the gain/boost settings, but I did restart my computer. I'll
test it out online in a bit.

Thanks for the feedback all,
yes, even you greens.

Cheers
