Title: these two books
Post by: Mirage on January 11, 2011, 02:29:51 PM
I am thinking about adding to my small but growing aircraft library by purchasing these two books

Fw 190:Defending the Reich

and

Fw 190 in North Africa

from what I hear, the later in the best reference available for finding information about Fw 190's service in africa, but I am not sure about the first book, anyone have it/read it?

thanks for the help

At the moment, I'd go with the "Battle of Kursk" book.

The second book must be kind of small since there were so few 190s that ever made it to North Africa.

Ouch, that was a bit immature.

How so?   Take his Elefant "wish".   Had he read more about the Battle of Kursk, he'd never have wished for the useless TD.   It is a great book all around and he'd learn something.

The Africa book is similar to this book:

Dear fellow enthusiasts,

I am very pleased to announce the launch of a new publishing company called Air War Publications. The aim of the company is to produce high-quality books about the operations, units and personnel of the Luftwaffe and Allied air forces during the Second World War.

The first book available from Air War Publications is 'Focke-Wulf Fw190 in the Battle for Sicily', written by Morten Jessen and Andrew Arthy. This title covers the service of Fw190 units in the Mediterranean theatre in the four-month period from the Axis surrender in North Africa to the invasion of the Italian mainland, with the focus on the role of the Fw190 in the Sicilian campaign of July and August 1943. It features many first-hand accounts from personnel of both sides, along with numerous photographs, maps, and colour aircraft profiles. The book describes many eventful and successful Fw190 anti-shipping operations and attacks on Allied landing forces. It also describes the serious problems hampering Fw190 operations, such as the devastating Allied bombing campaign against Sicilian airfields, a severe lack of operational aircraft, and the pressure placed on senior Fw190 unit leaders by their superiors, including the threats of court martial made against two of them. This title is a sequel to the book 'Focke-Wulf Fw190 in North Africa', written by the same authors. The book specifications are:

•Size: 25 x 31,5 cm
•Format: hardcover, 224 pages in colour
•137 black-and-white & 3 colour photographs
•11 colour aircraft profiles by Claes Sundin
•16 colour maps, 4 emblems & 12 illustrations
•10 appendices, including loss & victory lists, camouflage & markings information, tactics, escort fighter material, statistical tables, & aircraft profiles with information for modellers

Please visit www.airwarpublications.com for further information, a book sample, free downloads of additional book-related material, flight sim skins from profiles in the book, and more.

Kind regards,
Morten Jessen

Google turned up this,

9x12, 176 pages, color artwork, 150 photos, maps, diagrams & data tables Though perceived by many to have been the fighter 'workhorse' of the Luftwaffe on the Western and Eastern fronts during World War II, the Focke-Wulf Fw 190 also served in unit strength in North Africa from late 1942 until the German collapse in May 1943. This new book is a day-to-day account of the air war over Tunisia and Algeria told through war diaries and first-hand accounts from both the German and Allied pilots who flew in the theater. Includes appendices with complete loss and victory lists, camouflage and markings of Fw 190s in North Africa, and Fw 190 captured in Tunisia. A day-to-day account of the air war over Tunisia and Algeria, told through war diaries and first-hand accounts from both German and Allied pilots. Contains more than 100 photos, many from private collections, plus illustrations & profiles.

It might seem expensive now but once the print run is bought up the cost will skyrocket. Last time I checked, for example, the Classic 262 volumes were going for around $500 or more each (initial cost iirc was $75). The Black Star/Red Cross series by Berstrum (sp?) is now in the 3 digits as well.

Isn't that the truth.  I'm amazed at what some of the book on my shelves now go for.  Glad I got em when i did.

Strike and Strike Again, the history of 455 Squadron flying Beaufighters is a good example.  The lowest price I could find now is $275.  It's not that old, but I'm glad I got it when i did for the Beau collection.

Strike and strike again! I remember you had suggested a good Beau book to me - but forgot the title. Hopefully I can track one down. I was very disappointed with 'Beaufighter over the Balkans', (loved the gun cam pics, though) so I am desperate for a good Beau book.

Try http://www.alibris.com

You can find great prices on used and new copies of many otherwise expensive or hard to find books. I use them frequently.

Insane busy here... Daughter, grand daughter and son-in-law living in my house. Son-in-law just got out of Army and Iraq. They are living with us until they can get their own place. Makes for a crazy household. Add to that, my job has been demanding greater time and I'm trying to finish a first draft of a manuscript.. Not much time for other things these days.

Nonetheless, I still read these boards several times a week to see what my old friends are up to...

Are you suggesting that real life is more important then AH?!? :)

Good luck with all of it sir.  You'll have to let us know when the book is coming out and what it's about some time.
