Title: A Question
Post by: Dichotomy on January 12, 2011, 05:32:15 PM
A question came up on a different board I frequent and Google hasn't provided the answer.  So I'm here at the second best source of information to find an answer.

Anybody got any idea how deep snow needs to be to stop a train?  I've watched some train snowplow videos and DAAAANNNNGGGGG!!!!

Going by ScotRail standards,

....about 0.3 inches

Seriously, had a flurry of snow, next thing all trains are cancelled!

 :rofl  :rofl  :rofl

I did find this video.. while it wasn't the depth of the snow that stopped it, there was enough to cause it to derail.

How many nuclear containment units does it take to stop a train?

this was my evil attempt to get everybody out of the LW arenas and single handedly reset the maps Melvin :D

J/k this forum is a font of information.  You just have to ask the right question.  I have faith.

It is a good question.  Something that one would not think about.

Found this on a train forum. Written by a fellow named John and it makes perfect sense.

"No simple answer.  It will depend on the initial momentum of the train (speed and/or weight) and what type of snow.  Powder, like skiers love, will basically blow away.  The opposite type is a hardpacked drift in a shallow cutting.  The latter has been known to to derail a train, which then stops really quickly."

Here is a vid from the same forum.

I've always wanted to ride in the locomotive of a train, just get to see things 99.9% never do...

this view would be so surreal and awesome!
