Aces High Bulletin Board

I turned my 'auto film sortie' option off ages ago because I got fed up of fast forwarding through heaps of boring takeoffs and climbouts looking for the good bits. I couldn't keep up and ended up with hundreds of films waiting to be processed. I also don't routinely use the film recorder because the majority of my fights don't have anything remarkable in them.
Every once in a while though after a great fight I have to kick myself because I wished I'd turned the film recorder on beforehand.
I was thinking that the time we need to save films the most is right after we've had a good fight, the kind with hindsight you'd wished you had recorded That's the real problem, you never know if it's worth recording until afterwards.
So I had the idea why not give the Aces High film recorder a 'post record' option. So the film recorder would run automatically, but only recording in a loop. Say ten minutes, or another arbitrary time sufficient to cover the average fight (player option perhaps).
At the end of ten minutes if the player hasn't hit the record key, then it overwrites the first minute again (or just plain removes the first minute), etcetera. If you end the sortie without pressing the record key the whole ten minutes gets wiped. No extra films get saved.
If you suddenly come across an epic fight, after it ends you just hit the record button and it saves the last ten minutes just as if you'd pressed record beforehand. This would be a separate option to the standard recording options and could be set in a checkbox somewhere 'post record on' for example.
This technique would be more efficient, because you could just save the most interesting bits without filling up your hard drive with mostly useless films, each with an unmemorable title.
I understand a thing called a TiVo Digital Video Recorder employs the same concept so you can record live television. I don't know if this is feasible because I have no technical information regarding the ahf file format, but assuming it is flushed to disk on a periodic basis it might be easy to implement.
P.S. I also just had another great idea that HTC could pay a perk point bonus for good ideas that they end up using, lol.

Interesting idea!
-
why dont you leave the auto record flight option on...and after a non eventful flight delete it.....or just start recording when the enemy is sighted.......
-
Because this would be more convenient and efficient and you...
Did you read the whole thing?

Ive had exactly the same problem and no doubt every player thats lasted more than 2weeks has had the same, another brilliant idea from our favourite neighbourhood genius.
If its possible of course if not hes an idiot. :aok

The only films I DON'T save are the ones where my SA sucks and I get jumped. Reason is, as soon as I decide to engage, it's the first thing I do is turn on the film. Even before I drop tanks. It's just a habit I got into like running through the views every few seconds.

Because it's too hard. :cry

Fixed.
It is an interesting idea but you know you would forget to "hit the record button and it saves the last ten minutes just as if you'd pressed record beforehand."
Essentially it would be an "undo" button but you would still forget if it's too much trouble to use the resources you have now.
Just record everything and delete what you don't want. No muss. No fuss. And you won't miss anything.

You also know, of course, that you can fast forward (play faster) and edit out the parts you don't want to see in a film, right?

Your implication that I am too lazy (or find it to difficult, not sure exactly what you mean) to operate the existing film viewer does rather overlook the fact that I took the trouble to think up and write out an improved system for everyone's consideration, does it not?
Perhaps we're not on the same wavelength, but the whole point was that right at the moment you think 'I wish I'd recorded that', you actually could with this system. How would you 'forget' at that moment also? :headscratch:
With the current system we are all condemned to either record and edit an awful lot of film or else essentially have none at all. This was a suggestion to give players the opportunity to record exactly what they wanted especially after they realised they did want it.
You honestly believe there is less fuss and muss with the current system? How many redundant files do you all have in your films folder?
Perhaps my explanation wasn't clear enough

Do you wish to save this film?
NO.
I forget to film all the time. It was usually eleven minutes ago.

Why do we need more "easy mode" buttons? Why can't players just learn the game as it is? I understand what you asking for, and I can see how it happens, but it's only because your too lazy, too forgetful, or caught up in the moment. Next thing we'll need is an "auto flap" button, because you KNEW you should have hit one more notice of flaps but your too lazy, too forgetful, or caught up in the moment.
We have enough "easy mode stuff. Learn the game.

I dont know how many are redundant to you... but to me none of them are redundant.
I film everything. After spending years flying with my squad I know I had thousands of films I could go through (current count is 3444 in archives and 194 for the last three months) but I wanted one particular fighter maneuver to share with them (the cobra roll). I literally do that maneuver dozens of times every month but I name the films by who I kill or who kills me and not the maneuvers.
I think what you should ask for is a better cataloging system. AHF files should allow us to save information in the file properties like WHO is in it and what plane types and of course the maneuvers kind of like mp3 files allow you to save the artist and studio and album and so on.

WELL I LIKE IT! +1
I don't see how this is "easy mode", nor do I see how it can be compared to aircraft management.
What I gathered from the wish is the need for a DVR type application that would loop for a few minutes. Sounds good to me.
I rarely run video, because when I do I end up with several hours of gibberish and nonsense with a few decent fights thrown in for good measure. I suppose I could sit and fast forward looking for that time I got tangled with those guys. Or, if I had the DVR option, I could just save the film immediately after the fact.
You know, like when It's fresh in my mind. :neener:

You know... something else would be a 'bookmark' function where you auto-record and then use the right mouse click or something to mark the engagement point. But you would probably forget that too.
Probably you should just give up. Sounds like your just not into films. :aok

I like idea shida, your just gotta ignore the BBS warriors.

As Melvin says this has nothing to do with managing an aircraft, I think it would be a genuinely useful and unobtrusive feature that would leave you with a small collection of very useful films that you wouldn't have to edit afterwards.
Less time editting and more time for flying.
I find it remarkable that some people think that this would be a 'lazy' feature. To extend that philosophy do you also suggest that it is ridiculous that all cars now have automatic ignition advance, and that it was much better when there was a manual lever on the steering wheel. Simpler and people should just learn how to use it what we already have, right?

I find it hard to believe that you actually watch all 3444 films with any regularity. How many hours of viewing would that be? Do you see my point?

What would a bookmarking feature offer that is better than this idea? So you can still watch the takeoff and climbout etc, but know when the bit worth watching will be? :headscratch:
I do find films useful, but short and to the point films. If you like to watch your extremely large collection, this idea would not stop you from filming everything as you do now. I did state this new idea would supplement the current film recording options, NOT replace them. I myself would rather spend my available time flying, not editting and thought others would think the same.
Probably you should just give up. Sounds like your just not into films. :aok
I've got a counter suggestion. All you poo pooers and naysayers should keep quiet and not stifle a creative solution because you either don't understand it or are too inflexible to adapt to a new idea :aok
Thanks for the support from those that think this is a useful idea :salute

I think it's a clever and useful idea.

Im not against the idea nrshida unless it adds even more overhead to the system which only HTC can say. It does seem redundant to me since I know we already have autofilm (I wonder whose wish THAT was?) and since I know from having recorded so much film exactly how far into a film to advance the player in order to find a fight and so knowing that it makes you seem lazy (a bit). In fact I think your next wish will be for a five minute capture and then a three minute capture.
Your "poo-pooing" my comments has ignored some really good ideas you know. No need to watch all 3444 films if they are all cataloged properly. I just pull up all the films under "playername" and I can see the level of their progress. It would bore you to tears. ;)

Enough said.

maybe I missed it but what if I only want what was recorded 12 minutes ago and now its been overwritten?

It seems that someone has an exciting and rewarding life. :headscratch:

Semp if something happened before your own fixed recording period, which I suggested as 10 minutes to get the idea going, then you're out of luck. Can't provide for every eventuality, this is already way of pulling something back from the past as it is!
Chalenge, you should start an iTunes-a-like for ahf files thread, if you think that's a better solution.
Flushing data to file is usually a background task and more a question of altering the algorithm, there should be no increased processing overhead.
Boy, the cynicism! I don't get anything out of this myself you know. I just gave some thought to a feature the game doesn't currently have and presented it, for free, for the benefit the whole player base. It's in the Wishlist because there's no Suggestion Box.
