Title: new dauntless skin
Post by: Tyrannis on January 13, 2011, 05:35:41 AM
sbd dauntless of the new zealand airforce  :salute

No. 25 Squadron in the Royal New Zealand Air Force was formed in July 1943 with Douglas SBD Dauntless dive bombers and served in the Southern Pacific based at the Piva Airstrip on Bougainville, flying missions against Japanese forces on Bougainville and at Rabaul. It was disbanded in May 1944 and reformed as a fighter/ground attack squadron flying F4U Corsairs. It served in Santo, Guadalcanal, Los Negros and Emirau, before returning to New Zealand and being disbanded in September 1945.

Nice plane, but you may want to try it yourself. Krusty has a really nice skin tutorial. Gimp photo editing program is free, and many of the skinners will assist when needed.

at this point i would get into skinning if i could. but the computer i use isent mine, its my cousins, and he heavily regulates what i do on it just because its a $3,000 computer.(took a month long fight just to get him to let me download aceshigh) so pretty much if i have to download anything to skin, then i cant do it.

GIMP is a harmless program. You should have no trouble downloading it, let alone get a virus. If he's worried about that, GIMP is extremely useful for things besides skinning. Photoshop would work, too.

his biggest complaints is whenever i ask to download something is the space it takes up to download, etc. he wont even let me download videos.

Let me rephrase...

When you said...
"whenever i ask to download something is the space it takes up to download"

Is your buddy saying that downloading something takes up too much space on his computer(memory on his
harddrive), or is he saying that he has a limited amount of internet and doesn't want to waste it on downloads?

As for that particular skin, it's next on my to-do list (as slow-moving as that is). If you want to, go for it! If things don't work out, it will get here eventually.

EDIT: Not the green skin, I don't think that's right. The picture I meant.

Essentially the same plane. It removed the carrier hook and had an inflated tail wheel (instead of solid rubber), but it was a land-based version of the same intended to be marketed to the Army.

is it too much of a difference tho for hitech to allow a banshee skin to be put on a dauntless?

I would have to check my e-mails to be sure, but I believe I asked them in anticipation of creating that kiwi skin, and they said it would be okay. At least, in regards to the kiwi planes, they said so. I think they would allow the A-24s but again would have to re-check the wording of the e-mail.

Buy yourself an external hard drive and put YOUR stuff on there.

I'd be willing to bet he'll come up with another reason though.

I would honestly say that we wait until the SBD is remodeled before we add anymore clothes to her lineup. :aok  But if this skins meets the requirements, and if the skinners are aware if there will be an update to her before the skin is accepted or not, why not? :)  An Olive Drab SBD...*drools*

Well after digging a little more not so sure I can see the two I have being skinned?
One is bare metal the other is white tailed & O/D  N/G.
I thought I had more than one bare metal but it was the same photo I had saved twice a long time back.

Well, your first one is an "odd job" aka squad hack, and not combat markings. The second one appears to be a liason unit after the A24s were replaced by F4us and other more advanced planes. Also appears to be noncombat as well.

before we start to critique it would be nice to know if feasible to do a new skin at all or if it would be better to wait til remodel.

I thought the bare metal one might have been part of the shipment that was diverted to Australia after the Philippines fell. A number of that shipment were in fact bare metal. Question that has never been answered sufficiently were those aircraft flown in combat that way? Some say yes others say not sure. I thought this photo may nave been one of those aircraft at first until I dug a little further.

The white tail was more for show & that there was a few different schemes out there & maybe some one knew a little more about the 2ND air task force. Possibly some one found out some info that might be able to slide it in under that it was attacked or some other excuse. Oh well. :bhead

I've got an A-24 OD skin all made up to submit, but I'm going to redo it and touch it up before it goes in.

Which one? Just curious because I was going to point out (back then when this thread was new) that almost all Army A-24s were trainers only. Very few Marine A-24s saw combat, as compared to their USN counterparts, and they may not have had any with OD uppers. The only others I can think of are RAAF (removed from combat quickly after awful losses) and RNZAF. Edit: and maybe some Free French? /edit

I'm somewhat doubtful as to any OD that saw service in US forces. I think some exports is the place to look for an OD skin.

Makes as much sense as remodeling a house that nobody ever sets foot inside.
