I was walking in the backyard last night and saw this little one perched on a speaker. Just curious what type of Owl this is. Looking at some pics after searching he/she seems to be a screech owl.

Looking at some other photos I'm thinking this is a young one.

Eastern screech owl. You could bairly hear them even when you are next to them.
-
Good pix there. Little bugger ain't it.
-
He was small. Not that I have given owls in the area any thought but I/we were surprised. Guess when you really on see them on tv and in the movies things get skewed.
My oldest making the brave approach. She is not scared of anything!

This was about the closest we came to the little one.

Yup, a gray-phase eastern screech owl. They come in a red-phase as well.
We have quite a few of those around here, and I see a few every year. I've flushed them while out hunting with my redtails, and even had one kill a mourning dove in my yard last year It was eating it in the driveway and let us come right up to it with a light.
Owls often come across as quite tame.
That's a full-grown screech owl in your picture. They don't get any bigger than that.
It's surprising how loud they can be when they vocalize. They have several different calls. http://www.owlpages.com/sounds.php

nice pics :aok
Shame it didn't bring you a letter from Hogwarts :)

I did not think they are loud compare to Great horn or Barn Owl.
Tame, yes. I had a family that visited my back yard on a daily base. I would have one of parent perch on my hand. they had three little ones that would circle me and catch June bugs. They would at times perch on my feet. I miss them :(

I've never heard a barn owl other than from recordings. I've heard all sorts of great-horned, barred, screech and saw-whets. I actually used to lead groups at night to go out and call/locate/listen to them.
They have a range of sounds. Some carry better than others, and sometimes they call with more volume. Sometimes they can barely be heard even when you're right next to them. Sometimes they can be heard clearly from a distance.
My all-time favorites are the barred owls, especially when a pair gets going and they answer each other back and forth!

Something about the screech owl calls that is unique. As for Barn owls, the first time you hear them, you will never for get the sounds. They will scare the sh*t out of you at first.

Hunting with your Redtails?

Dont let it fall asleep, by the looks of its pupils it has a concussion :)

Hunting with your Redtails?
Yup. I'm a licensed falconer, and hunt with birds of prey. Mainly small game, also some upland game.

Very cool Mtnman. I wouldn't have thought redtails for hunting. I know of some well trained falcons nearby at the USAFA. Redtails are fairly large around here. Thats a lot of bird to be holding on a gauntlet covered arm.

They're worse when they're holding you (instead of you holding them), and there's no gauntlet in the way... On the gauntlet is no problem at all, unless you fly them from the fist and carry them all day. The females are generally in the 42-47oz range, males are 32-38oz around here.
They're truly phenomenal birds, and are great if you have rabbits or squirrels available. A hunting redtail is a completely different bird than the lazy, soaring, bird most people see them as. I've flown others as well, but day-in and day-out they're tough to beat.
You're probably aware, but I'll mention it anyway... It's an extremely regulated sport; the most regulated in the world. State and Federal permitting is required.
