Title: DVD player
Post by: LeDragon on January 16, 2011, 01:11:53 PM
Any idea what would cause my liteon DVD player to be able to read cd's but not anything in DVD format.

Drivers are, according to Vista, up to date as is the firmware from liteon.

Under assumption that it isn't driver problem;
try cleaning the lens, maybe laser can't focus correctly. If problem persist it may be a sign of misaligned laser/lens.

If this is an old drive, particularly out of an HP, then run the model number in Google and see what you can find out about it.

HP and others were installing extremely cheap drives that lasted a year or two, then failed. I don't know if that practice has changed, but good luck.

Did you happen to play a CD from Sony BMG on your computer? Some of them include a nasty rootkit that can pork your drive. That's a long shot but one possible cause.

If the drive is old then like others already said it might just die of natural causes.

The good news is even if it did die your average optical drive that doesn't do anything blu-ray related runs around 20$.

There's two separate beams reading different disks. The beam gets weaker, how fast, depends on usage. I've seen a movie watcher's player slowly die, first symptoms being unable to play the second layer of dual layer dvd's (approx. at the beginning of the third hour of a movie). Dust and debris on the lens may also be the cause.
