Title: What foods never expire?
Post by: Latrobe on January 18, 2011, 05:55:12 PM
What are some foods that never go bad? I've heard before that honey never expires, and military M.R.E's last about 4-5 years I've read. What are other nutritious foods that have either a long expiration date or none at all?

I've heard before that honey never expires,
Only certain types of honey don't expire.
I've seen pictures of Canadian MRE's with big stickers across the top that say 'The honey in this pack is not for human consumption' because apparently they haven't made new MRE's in a long time and the honey's gone bad.

I still don't know if that was just a joke they used for the show, or if twinkies really do last forever. Can anyone confirm this?

Dehydrated or dry food will always last a long time, as long as it's not exposed to too much oxygen.  Rice is a good food for long-term storage.  I've got some in mylar bags with oxygen absorbers in the bag, as long as I keep the bags in decent condition, that food will easily last a decade, but probably much much longer.

It's all mind over matter. If you don't mind, it doesn't matter.  :aok

sugar wont go bad as long as it stays dry

I've heard that, but there's no nutrition in sugar. So, using it to try and survive off of isn't the best thing.

A little of both. If I can find the space for it, then I'd like to do some long-term food storage for those emergency situations.

This is what I've started to do, though not in the 5gal buckets.  10 Mylar bags with 10 oxygen absorbers on Amazon for about $25.  I've got some rice, beans, and other simple stuff sealed in bags in a box in my closet, about 50,000 calories worth.

I heard that a human could survive on a tablespoon of flour, cooking oil and sugar. Oil was used by the body to absorb the sugar and the starch. Essentially, water was the only other necessity. This was told to me by a teacher long ago who lived during the Cold War. Whether or not I got the jest of it is another matter entirely.

No, you'd catch all kinds of vitamin and mineral definciency diseases, such as scurvy and osteoperosis.  You'd be dead in less than a month.

I can't speak for specially manufactured products like MRE's, but I'm in the grocery business and can tell you this much. Canned prepared goods (spam, veggies, ravioli, ect) have on average 2 years shelf life with 6 months beyond the date. Frozen foods 18 months shelf with 3 months beyond the date. Some ultra pasteurized dairy products can have over a year shelf life unrefrigerated.

Perishables like bakery, meat, produce and dairy are just that, perishable.

You heard wrong. Even if there were nutrients in the water (which there aren't, minerals at best) you'd die from water poisoning while trying to drink enough to nourish yourself.

Very untrue.
Keep this in mind as a basis, in survival school we were taught the 3 Threes.
Three Min without Air, Three Days without water, Three Weeks without Food.
Many factores will influence these time frames as in physical shape, physical exertion, Temperature but in general depending on these influences this will shorten or lengthen this rule.
But surely you will eventually expire on water alone no matter, your body will start eating up the muscle tissues to survive and eventually succumb to major organ failure.

I'm getting ready for any event that might render things like grocery stores or running water inaccessible.  You back-up plan in case of a disaster shouldn't be the Red Cross, they do great work, but I'm not going to stake my life on them showing up.

Maybe.  :D

Even if 2012 isn't the end of the world (most likey it isn't), the fact that most humans think it is could actually cause a crisis. Everyone will be rushing out to buy everything they think they'll need to survive the end of the world all at once. Supermarkets will run out of stock, traffic will be at a stand still, people will be fighting over the last roll of paper towels. It'll be just like Black Friday, except on a bigger scale and will probably last weeks.

I'm just trying to get ready to survive "December 21, 2012. The day Humanity nearly destroyed itself for no reason."  ;)

In order to make sure you have some more nutritious things on hand, I would stock some canned green beans and peas in your collection.  Both have very low acidity, and can last for at least a few years.  If they have gone bad, you'll know it as soon as you open them.  The other thing to keep in mind is that you don't need to have food lasting 5-6 years.  Use your emergency stock as part of your pantry, and simply replace the ingredients as you use them every once in a while.  That way, you never come close to expiration dates on things you are saving for a very rainy day.  If #@^ hits the fan, you won't have enough food to last more than 2-3 years anyway.    :aok

As was mentioned before, keep your stuff cool and in low humidity to prolong shelf life.  Best of luck during the apocalypse, friend.   :lol

Yeah, I suppose I kind of assumed this, but to further your point.  Stuff like canned goods that last for a few years can still be valuable if you set up a rotation system.  Figure out how much you want for storage, let's say 20 cans, have 20-25 on hand.  Use them like you would any normal food and just make sure to replace those you used and place them at the back of the rotation.  Using a can feeder device (really don't know what it would be called) where you use the stuff at the front bottom and put the new stuff in at the top will make rotation quick and easy.

When or if the apocalypse comes, survivability wont be determined by the one who can horde food and stores, it will be determined by the one that can kill.  Guns, get your guns.   :D

Mountain House dehydrated meals. I have 4 cases to feed us for 30 days and another 8 cases of MREs (good for another 30 days, if rationed) should Mt.Rainer blow, or the big one hit soon, or little oriental men decide to lob some fissionable material in sub orbit.

Not meant to be a hijack!

The scary part is that years ago I would have never given the possibility of China in a War with us a second thought. Now, I could actually see something like that occurring given their massive military build up.. We do not manufacture anything anymore. We gave them all of our technology to use against us..

I'd hold on a little longer than that, maybe January 2013.  Anyway, most of the people I know who are into this aren't doing it because they fear the end of the world in 2012, it's because they want to be prepared.  Why would we make food that will store for 20+ years if we think the world will end in two years?

I always keep 10-20 lbs of rice (Sam's club, Uncle Ben's brand, 10lb bag) on hand.
10lbs of dry Beans, mostly Pinto's.
6-12 lbs of Pasta

Canned stuff like Ragu, Tuna, veggies and fruit get stockpiled when on sale, and cycled through.
New stuff at the back, oldest at the front.

Freezer is also full.

I should buy a big bag of flour and repackage with food saver to remove air.
If we ever really need it, its the fresh stuff we'll miss, eggs, milk, produce, fruit.

Shelves in the basement are also full of home canned meat, veggies, and jam's, jellies.

Call me old fashioned, but I've seen power go out in places for 3 weeks.

With my natural gas kitchen stove and a small ice fishing wood stove in the basement I have heated this house in mid winter for up to 5 days with no power. Keeps us warm enough to be happy, and puts food on the table even when the powers out.

I suppose if I was smart I'd freeze a couple of gallons of milk. Would probably last a long time that way.

It doesn't have to be the end of the world for stored food to come in handy, a big natural disaster can strain emergency services.  New Orleans is an example of a WROL situation here in the United States.

I was making a joke, but having been through a major earthquake I can relate to that. You have to be careful, for example, bottled water, over time the plastic leaches, and eventually the container will leak. I had this happen to me, with water supplies I had stored in the garage.

Crickets are pretty easy to store up. Worms too.

Pop Tarts last a long long time (four to five years). Anyone in Florida knows to stock up on Pop Tarts in case of hurricanes. Brown Sugar Cinnamin would probably be most palatable for situations where you are having to eat nothing but Pop Tarts.
