Title: So I saw a new IL2 commercial
Post by: Mustaine on January 18, 2011, 11:56:22 PM

doesn't it look a bit like some of the HTC player made commercials with the cuts and cinematography?

Does anyone even play that game anymore? I tried once and the views were SO horrible I gave up within 5 minutes.

Good question. Those graphics made AH look seriously outdated. :huh

IL2 was ok to play but its for the less serious simulator enthusiast....if you could say that.

the only thing going for it is eye candy...How I wish AH could get that eye candy...bleh. I'd rather have a good game with pretty good eye candy than a bleh game with great eye candy (Black Ops ugh).

As I'm sure you well know, it is "a boxed sim", not a downloadable FE sim like Aces High.

Macchi C.202 doesn't have a radial engine. It is a Fiat G.50.

I know there's a lot of AH fan boyism here, but I have to admit that il2 provides me with an immersion factor much closer than real life than AH. Especially the online wars without icons or gps, those are fanatic, keeping on the look at ... Am I going to dive on this low dot to loose my alt to a possible friendly .. Ok let's be honest, many HTC players have poor frame rates and graphic settings, how many people would be able to play with those graphics? It would be just stupid to get graphics that high

Renegade is in my squad, and I'm sure he'd be offended by the mere insinuation of him doing any such things.

To be honest, I didn't find the graphics that great, not bad, but not amazing.  I like the water detail better, explosions and splashes are a little better, but a lot of it is just "new", thus exciting.  IMO, the minor disadvantage Aces High has in graphics is shadowed by the huge advantages in game-play.

you don't think they are referring to, Free-French,  Polish or Czech?

Or they have a built in game mechanism that lets people swap sides and grief  :)

Did you actually watch that commercial?

The lighting effects, texture resolutions, 3d detail, the fire (oh, especially the fire) etc. etc. are all stunning. Aces High is just finally surpassing the graphics quality of the original release of Il2... in certain areas.
This game looks amazing, and if it's like the previous Il2 releases it will have detailed engine management and stuff, correct? I'll definitely have to check it out once it comes out.

Well I'll be frank, but some people need to enter the 21st century. To run Windows 7 smoothly and quickly takes a half decent computer these days. People can't run windows 98 machines forever and expect to be able to play all of the new games. I know it's a rough economy now, but with an ever changing technological world, even a decent computer can be had for 400-500 dollars.

I'm going to have to agree with Frenchy on this, IL2 gives you a more immersion feeling to the air battles of WWII. AHII has great game play but it feels like I am dog fighting in a pixelated arena more than an actual environment and that is what AH lacks.

Yes it is true graphics are not everything, but without the graphics you are limited in immersion, which in a simulator is probably the most important aspect.

I'm glad this thread came up, because I bought a download of Il2: Forgotten Battles years ago for a less than stellar computer and I remember my computer reaching the point of smoking when I loaded it up.  :frown: I was going through some old backups and I found the download in a folder. I recently got a video card for my already newer computer and I decided to re-register(the registration still works by the way!) and I've been loading the game up now and then.

My first flight was in a P47 of course and after going across the map on a mission at 8x speed(which took 15 mins) I finally found some AI planes....I closed to within 400 yds and let off some rounds.   :joystick: Nothing...no hit sprites.  So I made another pass and closed into 200 yds and proceeded to promptly ram straight into the 190.  :cry I still haven't made a kill and this is 3 weeks later after 5 or 6 flights.

I miss AH.  :rofl

That has some to do with HTC being a small operation, big teams are able to... I don't know, optimize the software I guess a lot better, and I suppose they have access to other technology that can make the game more streamlined. Games from small companies never can run as well with the same level of detail in graphics as games from large companies, from my experience.

Wings of Prey or whatever the console port was was ran a lot better on my PC than Aces High does despite looking more or less like Cliffs of Dover, granted I'm sure the flight model calculations were a bit smoother.

I'm not a huge fan of Il-2, its OK and a good distraction but its simply too fidly as a relax after work type of thing, too much buttonology and WhereTF am I f your not paying constant attention. Not being able to climb out AFK is a big detractor for me.

63% of all new computers come with an Intel video chip in them.

With Ubisoft behind him, Oleg has had no shortage of funding for this project, and he and his team have taken their sweet time in getting it ready for release.  Anyone who has the hardware to run CoD would be a fool not to buy it, but since I hear it's going to be released on steam, I might be a fool....err, no, I'll probably cave in and buy it anyway. ;)

1C has a completely different business model than AH, and offers a completely different flight sim experience.  Both are good in their own ways.  Il-2 has always offered something more like a simulation of WW2, while AH is free for all combat with the weapons of WW2.  You are not required to hate one if you like the other, but most seem to do so without giving the other a chance.  This goes equally in the other direction, of course.  The Il-2 community thinks we're a bunch of children playing an xbox game that just happens to run on a pc. :)

Wings of Prey or whatever the console port was was ran a lot better on my PC than Aces High does despite looking more or less like Cliffs of Dover, granted I'm sure the flight model calculations were a bit smoother.

Wings of Prey has flight model calculations?

AH has a top notch flight model, and that takes a lot of cpu power with not a lot left over if you don't have a half-decent gpu.  Have you tried Rise of Flight?  The graphics are stunning, but still without as much eye candy as wings of prey.  It can bring a good pc to its knees because of the physics calculations.

Well, in this new IL2, you get about a dozen planes to choose from, fun right?  :huh

I'd rather try and find a giant land/air battle with over a hundred players at the cost of graphics, that even turned down, aren't bad.

Care to guess how many planes AH had summer of '99, or how many folks you could count on flying with when it first came out?

Lets see if I remember right off the top of my head. I think the total was around 15 for the planes and the numbers online were less than 100 at peak hours for a while.
