Wanna see what everyone's favorite aviation movies are? Me personally Top Gun. Little lovey-dubby for me, but can't beat the fighter jets. Any recommendations for me would be great too!

Pearl Harbor :aok
-
Definently watch Hot shots 1 and 2.....Best movies ever..... :devil
The original Hot Shots is an excellent parody of Top Gun and other hokey Hollywood aviation movies. :aok
"Strategic Air Command," with Jimmy Stewart, not Rock Hudson. Good, accurate aviation sequences due to Mr. Stewart's real life flying experience.
"Battle of Britain" is also an oldie, but goodie.
Too many good ones to pick just one.
-
:bolt:
Pearl Harbor :aok
-
Pearl Harbor :aok
you need beat. It took years before I trusted micheal bay again.

At least mine was a joke.

Couple of good close ups of Steermens and T-6s, and lot of 51D/Ks.
Loosely based on the real Memphis Belle. But some really nice shots of 17s on take off with a good crosswind.
Just a flat out classic.
-
Twelve O'Clock High.
Nothing else I've seen comes close to capturing the pressures of being in air combat, day after day.
-
nothing can top pearl harbor since it's got the best dogfight scenes
-
:huh
-
Am I totally messed up when I say that the C47 pilots on DDay has some solid, big, brass, ones? Wouldn't mind doing an offline of that action.
-
ok not a fan of the computer generated movies like flyboys and red baron(2008).......liked the great waldo pepper last segment dogfight but with the original ending where waldo crashes and the triplanes also crashes into the barn....but for best aviation film.... DR88 from the 1930's, HH's hells angels, its nice t see real flying and real explosions in a movie.
-
Morph's "NathBDP" vid.

i was thinking of that earlier but couldnt remember the name. I liked that movie too
Also, while not all flying, I really liked Amelia when i recently watched it for the first time.

"Strategic Air Command," with Jimmy Stewart, not Rock Hudson.
:headscratch:
Jimmy Stewart starred in Strategic Air Command.
Rock Hudson starred in Bombers B-52.
-
Always liked BoB, favorite part is the first or second Spanish 109 that passes over the fence to the airfield. That couldn't have been more than 10 or 15 ft from the top of that fence :O
:aok
-
There was a WWI movie that won an oscar for best picture, I think it was called Wings, It was a silent film and was incredible. Mid twenties if I recall correctly (gotta love AMC would never known about it if not for that).
Flying Leather Necks
Of course Tora, Tora, Tora
MIdway were both great as well.
I hate the movie but Pearl Harbor did have the most realistic looking dog fight scenes I have seen, only reason worth watching.
-
All i know is that Top Gun is the worst :old:
-
Not completely an aviation movie, but Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned How to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb is always a favorite of mine. Fun fact, the set for the B-52 cockpit was made based off of only one photo, but some people from the Air Force said it looked like an exact replica.
-
Airplane :D
-
WOW no one has said "Flying Tigers" starring John Wayne.
-
havent seen it for 20+yrs but I remember thinking X-15 was great, lots of detail about, and footage of one of the coolest aircraft ever flown :aok
(http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51RZW3HK20L._SL500_AA300_.jpg)
-
Not strictly an aviation movie, but the original "Flight of the Phoenix" with Jummy Stewart
-
Airplane :D
Roger, Victor, Over. :D

Pearl Harbor was awesome, these people don't know how to enjoy a dang movie :bhead
it was a good ACTION movie. just most ppl hate it because it has some mis-information in it. plus that whole love triangle going on.
-
Yeah the love part kinda ruined it, i just skip all those parts :lol
-
Yeah the love part kinda ruined it, i just skip all those parts :lol
If i have enough time i'll upload that movie on youtube without all the luv scenes.

:headscratch:
Jimmy Stewart starred in Strategic Air Command.
Rock Hudson starred in Bombers B-52.
Sorry, Rock wasn't in Bombers B-52. Efrem Zimbalist Jr, Karl Malden and Natalie Wood stared in it.

http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=dark+blue+world+trailer&aq=1
A little obscure but a pretty good watch.
Bit of humour, bit of sex, bit of flying.
I think the air duels are CGI, but it's pretty well done.
-
(http://www.teachwithmovies.org/guides/right-stuff-DVDcover.jpg)
That is the most glorious film ever made about aviation and aviators. Everything else is for pudknockers.
-
Always loved
Flight of the Intruder
633 Squadron
Battle of Britain
The Hunters

Alot of it is a mix of CGI, and enhanced unused footage from the Battle of Britain

Pancho : "You have to die Sweets."

TOP GUN/Flight of the Intruder

HOTSHOTS 1 AND 2 :noid :devil
-
:aok
-
Biggles for the win :aok
-
Dark Blue World is a good one.
-
the bit in Dark Blue World where the fuel is pouring into the cockpit of the spit gave me shivers, I could almost smell the avgas. horrible and realistic.
-
If i have enough time i'll upload that movie on youtube without all the luv scenes.
here's what you'll only see:
1. Yamamoto & the japanese navy
2. Washington DC HQ
3. US base and fleet in Hawaii and Pacific
4. TORA TORA TORA!
And Tora tora Tora Beats Pearl Harbor in spades hands down no contest
-
Cessna flight instruction videos by John and martha......."Just a scoche of throttle"
-
There as been lot of decent movies out there but I would have to say its close tie between Battle Of Britian and Tora, Tora, Tora: At least it was the real planes in the air (minues a few cheesy special effects) instead of CGI planes.
-
I respect that many like Pearl Harbor with Ben Afleck though I think it was a terrible abuse of history. Tora, Tora, Tora beats it hands down.
I agree with Memphis Belle, being a Tennessean and all. I would throw in 12 O'clock high is a must. I would also go with Flying Leathernecks with John Wayne.
12 O'clock High with Gregory Peck has some tremendous lessons in leadership, on a very serious level.
Boo

Thanks for the back up on Air Force Widewing. Where else can you join the crew of a B-17B, fly into the Pearl Harbor attack. Then drop in on Wake Island on the way to the Phillipines, where you lose your pilot and bail the crew except for the pilot training washout, who somehow one hands the damaged 17 in. And where else would you find a crew that determined to rebuild said B17B in time to take off as the Japanese are shooting at them near the strip. They then, on thier way to Australia sight the Japanese fleet and lead the attack that destroys it!
throw in the P39s and the battle between bomber and pursuit pilots and it's the movie of all time! We had a long debate on another forum where we were finally able to identify the actual B17B used to play the "Mary Ann" Love that movie! :)
-
Dark Blue world, flat out.
But since the parameter is "aviation movie", the old "flight of the Phoenix" with Jimmy Stewart is IMHO a very good movie.
-
Too many to list...but really, best ACM in the past couple of years was in "How to Train Your Dragon." Perfect example of a rope maneuver.
HAH! That is so TRUE! Good one Muzzy!

I would like make honorable mention of the original " Flight of the Phoenix " with Jimmy Stewart

if it didnt have the love triangle in it, it would of been a good movie.
earl the mechanic, is one of my most favorite guys ever in a movie. (love the part where he takes his shotgun off the back of his motorcycle and starts shooting at the zeros :rofl)
-
eh, i thought the scenes of him fighting in britain were pretty cool from that movie.
I agree, I though it was just a little short. And then there's the little matter of whatever good came from that first dogfighting scene was then brutaly bent over and worked hard in a wrong way during the last dogfighting scenes with the P-40s and Zeros.

watch the unedited version. Earl has a few spicy extra lines in that scene

Forgive me if someone already mentioned it, but Howard Hughes' Hell's Angels was a masterpiece of WW1 aviation.
Jean Harlow wasn't bad either...
-
am I the only one who thought "Firefox" was one of the best... im in a boat all by myself.......thats all right I dont mind. l-) allthough can that be considered a "aviation" movie.......damn you all.......its a conspiricy I tell ya..........nope...yup....... ..Firefox is defanitly a aviation movie and Clint can use his 44 magnum the most powerfull handgun in the world to blow all those other wannabee "aviation" movie stars head's clean off.......,-)

This is one of my "guilty pleasure" movies. Not very good but a heck of a lot of fun to watch... kinda like Strange Brew eh?
-
"Piece of cake" - OK, it is a mini-series, but you can watch it like a movie. Beats all other BOB/spit movies out there by a huge margin.
"Blue max" - How the A-team started during WWI working for the Kaiser. Not quite, but George Peppard is there.
"633 squadron" - the aviation version of a Pr0n movie: Terrible story, bad actors, but who cares when you watch sexy mosquitoes fly through Norwegian fjords? It also brought tears into my eyes... when I read that the actually burned real mosquitoes for the movie effects, the bastards. Torture animals no, but burning mosquitoes yes? This is the true ugly face of humanity! :bhead
-
Dark Blue world, flat out.
But since the parameter is "aviation movie", the old "flight of the Phoenix" with Jimmy Stewart is IMHO a very good movie.
Actually the remake wasnt half bad either. But then again. It stayed fairly loyal to the original. UNLIKE most of the failed remakes of Hollywood classics (king kong)
-
Twelve O'Clock High
Battle of Britain
Tora, Tora, Tora
Say no more. I'm surprised these weren't the first answers.
-
Although I've never seen the actual movie...
Chevaliers du Ciel.

Witness: Striker was the squadron leader. He brought us in real low. But he couldn't handle it.
Prosecutor: Buddy couldn't handle it? Was Buddy one of your crew?
Witness: Right. Buddy was the bombardier. But it was Striker who couldn't handle it, and he went to pieces.
Prosecutor: *Andy* went to pieces?
Witness: No. Andy was the navigator. He was all right. Buddy went to pieces. It was awful how he came unglued.
Prosecutor: *Howie* came unglued?
Witness: Oh, no. Howie was a rock, the best tailgunner in the outfit. Buddy came unglued.
Prosecutor: And he bailed out?
Witness: No. Andy hung tough. Buddy bailed out. How he survived, it was a miracle.
Prosecutor: Then Howie survived?
Witness: No, 'fraid not. We lost Howie the next day.
Prosecutor: Over Macho Grande?
Witness: No. I don't think I'll ever get over Macho Grande.
-

In no particular order:
BoB
The Hunters - Robert Mitchum and Robert Wagner flying Sabres in Korea
Angels 15 - About a young BoB pilot
Reach for the Sky - Douglas Bader
The Bridges at Toko-Ri - William Holden flying Banshees (Grumman Panthers actually!) in Korea
The Dam Busters
Dark Blue World
Memphis Belle - William Wylers documentary - Not the crappy film!

Say no more. I'm surprised these weren't the first answers.
Agreed.......
Great films and will withstand the test of time. 12 Oclock High was one of the films I had my young troops watch as a lesson in leadership.......
