Company of heroes online is free so try that out.  World of tanks is also a good choice (also free).  Don't listen to the people that tell you WoT is bad (trust me they just suck at it).

From what I've heard HoI 3 sucks, HoI 2 + Arsenal of Democracy seems to be the favorite of the series around the slums I frequent.

I had tons of fun with Hearts Of Iron - don't remember if 2 or 3.

Also lots of fun with Uncommon Valor. It's the Coral Sea era defending the general area of Port Moresby, the Solomons, and Australia from Japan. It's not a shooter, but a theater scale strategic wargame that models down to individual ships and planes.

After readying Myth's AAR, I would recommend HOI3 to anyone. I've been wanting to try Arsenal of Democracy for a while though.

yea ive played it the last two days, im to the third level of the campaign i think (where your taking the town). i must say the ai here is pure stupid :s i tell them to take cover behind a building so they dont get choped up by machine gun fire. what do they do? run right out in the middle of the machine gun fire.good game, just bad ai.

Post by: curry1 on January 23, 2011, 07:35:49 PM
WTF are you talking about ai?  it is not ai if you are controlling them.  If you move a squad across an open area (which is covered by a MG) to cover they will get eaten up becuase they just frakken ran through an open area with a 1300rpm mg42.

...im talking about when you give the ai a destination, and they take the "out in the open" path to it instead of staying behind the building like i wanted them too.

Uncommon Valor is pretty good. I loved the old SSi warship and carrier games on the C64. This is alot like them. A little too strategic, I prefer tactical, but its pretty good.

SSG made another carrier game thats pretty good, Carriers at War. It's been updated and re-released on Matrix Games website.

And if you're into wargames, you could do a lot worse than working your way through the Matrix catalog!

Not WWII, but check out the Total War series.  Shogun 2 is about to be released.  Probably the best war-gaming series available, in my humble opinion.

Many years ago i was in a store in Sydney which specialised in wargames, and military books. Back then it was mostly board games with a selection of the early video games. Back then I was shopping for a good wargame for my C-128 and asked at the counter for a recommendation. The person behind the counter pointed to 2 gentlemen talking in front of the video game shelves and said you might want to ask them - one was the founder of SSG who promptly handed me both Carriers at War, and the now very defunct but awesome Europe Ablaze. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-oZwCHKo_34 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-oZwCHKo_34)

I had that mod but it got very old very fast. I would LOVE a civil war game like this but being able to shoot someone halfway across the map was very uncool. It made it too easy. If you left it like that and played bunker hill for ETW - the British never get close to the hill. You don't even have to move your units.

Download the most recent version of it without the launcher and try changing the launcher to not use torrenting but a direct download.

hahah perhaps if I knew how great the games were going to be!

I used to spend hours on Europe Ablaze, especially on the what ifs like upgrading the polish airforce with hurricanes etc...SSG used to be brilliant with their RUN5 magazine full of scenarios and tables of aircraft, and ships for their EA, Battlefront and CAW games.

not exactly sure how to do that. i have the most recent. Whats happening is that my launcher is freezing up while its trying to update. it stays stuck on 1.92%. i have tried manually opening additional ports for the launcher specifically but still nothing. I submitted a log to the COHO and then basically told me that they didn't know what to do.
