Title: A pair of GREAT international thrillers
Post by: Simaril on January 22, 2011, 03:27:25 PM
Although it might pain some on the boards to hear it, the French can make one heck of a movie. While in the US French cinema has an artsy connotation, I've come across some flat out wonderful action movies. Today I'm watching a sequel that so far is every bit as excellent as the original.

and
The Crimson Rivers 2: Angels of the Apocalypse

They both have serial killings, and both have some grisly moments, though never over the top gore for its own sake. But what makes them so great is the unfortunately unusual combination of scriptwriting, camerawork, and acting that keeps you on the edge of your seat. And both make significant references to WW2 - the second film gets us inside the Maginot line. I won't say any more....

Just to be fair - they are subtitled. But the acting is so good (Jean Reno is great, and the second one has Christopher Lee!) that I wouldn't have anything to do with dubbed voices, cause the folks they hire for voice actors are essentially NEVER as good as the originals.

Give 'em a shot. Both are on Netflix, and at one point the first one was on the instant download panel.

Seen them both and they are great. There are more excellent movies about Pierre Niemans too

I remember a seeing a clip from a French "Top Gun"-like action movie too, think I found the link on this BB a few years ago.

Also a great one. It's filmed in English, so no subtitles. Nonstop action, serious tension, lots of ammo expended.
