I wondered if HTC could devise a custom routine to uninstall the core program that would leave behind peripheral user files that have been added or tweaked (missions, maps, stick settings, sounds, etc.), followed by a custom reinstall that would not overwrite those files.
Also perhaps change the AH folder tree so that all customizable files/folders like the examples above would be located one folder, "User Customizable files" or something, that could easily be located and saved.

Sport, it would be way easier if you just copied the files you'd like to save from the AH directory. I feel that your request is needed for a extremely limited portion of the community, unless of course I'm misunderstanding your wish.

Reinstalls happen. How does anyone know what files to save? It would be easier for me (and no doubt all non-geeks) if an AH maintenance uninstall - reinstall option would leave user settings intact. I can't imagine programming that would break the bank.

settings, sounds, skins, missions folders. along with films. that just about covers everything.

You're probably right. I can think of several games that save "user preferences" and such when uninstalling. If you want to delete the info, you just uncheck a box in the uninstaller.
I'll give this a +1.

Every full new version release of the game, after I install it, I create a folder AH.Bak.xxxx. Copy the wole thing into it once the new version is stable and I've tweaked everything I like.

The game installer/remover already does that. It only installs what is needed. The remover only removes the basic components. All settings, terrains, skins, custom sounds and so on, are preserved.
You can safely install, over the top of a current installation, and not lose anything.

I must be doing something wrong when I have had to reinstall the game. I lose all skins and head settings every time. I then have to reset all the head setting is all planes and GVs.
-
There are some things, on your computer, that can cause that, but it is not the game installer/remover that does it. UAC can cause it under Windows 7/Vista. Installing to another folder can cause it. Using Norton or McAfee ( possibly other anti-xxx software) can cause it.
I am sure there are others.

Thanks for the input.
I've got Windows 7 and I installed AH to the default folder during install. I was only aware of the Windows application uninstall, and it took out everything, i.e. reinstall was completely uncustomized.
