When I was in grade school we watched all the launches live on T.V.
All the kids would gather around because back then they were very special moments to us. I distinctly remember a couple of our teachers breaking down in tears when it happened. What a tragic event.

So do i, i was home sick. :salute

I was at home with a back injury waiting for my mom to come pick me up and take me to the hospital. She came in and told me what happened so I fired up the TV and we watched for a couple of hours till the pain got too intense for me.
-
Remember the exact moment this happened when I was in the 7th grade.

Didn't have tv's in every room in High School like they do now, but, upon news of the tragedy, the rooms that did have them became very crowded as school came to a screeching halt.

I remember exactly where I was when the news came over the radio, and exactly what was happening.
I remember being able to instantly see how stunned people were, because I was driving, and people suddenly just slowed as they took their foot of the gas and stared blankly at the radio in stunned disbelief.
For years I had about 8 hours of recorded coverage on VHS tape, I went home for lunch, popped a tape in the VCR, and set it on SLP record.
I remember Reagan speaking to a grief stricken nation.

I also remember where I was the second time we lost a shuttle, we were helping cub scouts get started on the Pinewood Derby cars for the coming season, in a friend's woodworking shop, when one of the mothers came in and told us to turn on the TV. There was only news that it was missing, but the adults knew, you could tell by the looks on our faces.
Astronauts, now those people are REAL heroes, not like "singers", "actors", and "ballplayers".

I was watching the launch on television when it happened. I'll never forget that sinking feeling in my gut.
I was outside when Columbia went over Texas. I was standing in my driveway when a dollop of melted metal hit my roof. I contacted NASA about it. They never came to get it, so I preserved it in a block of acrylic and mounted it.
<S> to all them.

One of the students who used to go to my district had a mother who was eliminated in one of the previous tests. She didn't get to go. The kid watched at school and the teachers had to restrain him because he wanted to run home and see him mom. (4th grade). (This was told to me on the 20th anniversary).
Skuz, that has to be quite a piece of metal. <S>
<S> to all who died, although I never witnessed it.

Amen..... was a sad day indeed.
I remember getting a call from my Mother..... she was stunned as she watched the launch. I got to a tv as fast as I could to see what happened.

Living near Johnson Space Center here in Houston, we all remember. We will all never forget.
We all recognize the sacrifice they shouldn't have ever had to make.

I just had a gotten home from midterm exams and I was watching CNN and the rest is history.
-
I watched it live in my 1st grade classroom.
One of my favorite songs of all time, written by my favorite musician of all time, was written in honor of those men and women.
I love this song... Flying for Me (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T4DBpW-hSns)

I was a DJ at a small radio station and watched it live while I was on air. I knew I had just witnessed history and a great tragedy all at the same time.
I don't remember exactly what I said when I broke in, but I dumped the song that was playing (Billy Joe Royal- Burned Like A Rocket) and went to our news feed. I also immediately yanked that song out of our rotation.

I was in my 7th Period class in the 7th Grade when our teacher Mr. Chesley closed the door to the classroom and took a chair to the front of the class and turned facing away from us. He sat down looking at us and said these words, "Just a little while ago, the shuttle Challenger exploded after liftoff."
Every teacher was instructed to give that news at the beginning of 7th period class in my Jr. High School. At 3:15 PM, we all were running home to turn on CNN and watch the news.
