Title: Sailors, Heave To!
Post by: Penguin on January 27, 2011, 09:56:31 PM
Hey guys, I've gotten my liscence as a "zeglaz jachtowy" (yacht sailor) in Poland.  It says that I can pilot any vessel inland (during the day with an adult present) and a vessel up to 7 meters long out to two NM out at sea.  I want to know if this applies in the United States, and where I can find a place near Boston to sail some more.

Also, if anyone knows of a junior regatta league in Boston, I'd love to see how I could join a team.

PS If you have any wild and outlandish seaman's yarns, post them below!

As far as I know you don't need any kind of license to sail here.

Just find a yacht club. http://goo.gl/maps/sS1m (http://goo.gl/maps/sS1m)

The well established ones usually have some sort of one-design dingy racing or youth program. I'm from the opposite side of the country, so as to which of those listed have a program, I don't know.

Have fun.

A pic of my boat.

Finnaly a thread i can brag my *** off in!!!! :D

Ive been sailing for years, everything from small boat regattas to professional offshore racing and crewing on tallships:

Thats me crewing, out on the trapeeze on a 420 in Dana Point harbor, ca, I did a number of regattas through sea scouts

86 foot Trans pac design, i worked the pit for about 8 months, right up until she demasted on newport-port vallarta, no i was not working that race, thank god, would have hated to have been blamed for a 1.5 million carbon fiber mast toppling down

Ive also speant several weeks out to sea on the spirit of dana point, here she is off ana capa, and me jumping off the bowsprit

I then crewed on the 1926 Alden racing schooner Curlew (yes thats why i chose my callsign, was curlewsailor was too long), thats her underway on top, the others are some interesteing pictures of other tallships and me on the bowsprit with the Bounty in the background, asside from being a deckhand i also was the gunner for the mock cannon battles, yes i know its small but its the loudest pos ever

I also have been teaching sailing to children for 6 years now, i recieved my US Sailing instructor cert and never looked back, i love teaching sailing with a passion.

All of this not even mentioning all the just day sails on some 28-42 ft yatchs, figured by this point youve stopped reading lol
Sorry for the ridiculously long post but as a (22 y/o) old salt i had to share my stories

Wow!  Thanks for the information, sir!  I was just wondering, are those sunfish?  I learned on an Optimist.  Is it true that its mast can stand up to an 8 on the Beauford scale (I didn't test it out, owing to the lack of a super-storm at the school).  When I went to the higher sailing school, what I learned there really screwed up the speed of my tacks and jibes (I think that's what they're called, I only know them as zwroty).  I nearly decapitated a girl with the boom!

No those are Catalina Capris 14' s, the small one is sabot obviously, though i work a camp in pa that uses sunfish, they cant head through the wind for crap, they tack worse then catamarans, dont ever sail one, i was just lucky to learn how to sail at 10 and stay involved, build a rep in my harbor, did sea scouts, sailed almost every night, and just got into the tallship world through lot sof maintiantce, just gotta build the rep, also get your kids inlovled in sea scouts, great programs out there

The interior, my bunk was the couch on the right, not bad to wake and live in that at all

I wish i could find a good pic of hte deck, its teak with LOTS of varnished teak trim and deck houses, and the ammount of brass i had to polish EVERYDAY is insane

I just have a kayak.I like to not only go out on the water but, I like to fish from it as well! You might find this interesting, Virginia has recently started a new water safety program where you are issued a type of safe boater card by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. However, this does not apply to smaller boats like kayaks. :salute

What a beautiful interior, it must take quite a bit of work to maintain.  Sea scouts, you say?  We have a community sailing program in Boston, but I've never heard of Sea Scouts.

Sea scouts is actually a branch of the Boy Scouts of America, and teh interior wasnt that bad, only had to touch it up once a year, the extiereior where all that trip was was a different story, we had a guy that was a house painter in a previous life that works when ever the boat is in harbor year round, ful time to keep up with the damage of the sun and salt, there are areas we have to work on every 3 months, its rouch, not to mention polishing lots of brass every time before we go out, but itw worht it to keep her looking great
