Last night I was flying about, feeling satisfied after finishing my first multi-kill run since my return . (OK, it was 2 in an La7 and I ditched it so no one would see the buffer!) Anyway, somebody came on 200 and mentioned that this was his last night on AH after trying it for two months.
I pm'd him back and forth, and he seemed like a totally reasonable guy. He had two complaints, two main reasons he was leaving the game:
1. "The game seems to be more about numbers than about combat."
2. "There are a lot of not-nice people here."
So I told him there were others who felt the same, that the subpopulation of "hunters" played the game differently. That learning a few ACM tactics makes an enormous difference in how the game plays. That there is nothing close to the challenge of learning that air to air chess game, or the rush you get from beating a 1v2. That I'd be happy to show him a few tips, and introduce him to the kinds of guys who send each other computer parts and take up collections to pay for squaddies' convention plane tickets.
I don't know if he'll be back, because it seemed his made was pretty made up. But he seemed to be the kind of guy AH needs more of....and we lost him.

Reminds me of another guy who I got to know a few months back. Good stick, knew his history backwards and forwards, and a dang nice guy.

Just heard on the news that online digital book sales surpassed paperback books. So, another segment of our life is relegated to the digital world in the name of convenience. Gone is that social interaction. There are a few who play aces high who evidentally only have an online social life. The anonimity allows them to be the bully or the sage that they always wished they could be in real life. Unfortunately in a war based simulation such as ours, the bully will be out front while the chivalrous or sage sort(<----- yes a very old idea) stays quiet in the background.
I commend you on your attempt to reach out to this person. :salute

Okay time for me to go off on a rant here.
When I joined this game I knew about P51's and B17's. I saw the commercial and gave it a run. Bought a cheapo saitek joystick and did two weeks offline. I was HOOKED.
I found the boards and started, tentatively, posting to find the vibe and see what kind of people I would be playing the game with.
I guess I was one of the lucky 1% because I ran into people like Daddog, Murdr, Widewing, Outlaw, Rowdy, Yanksfan, Batfink, and many others that aren't leaping into my brain but were serious influences into the way I approached the game.
I flew the MA's but I was never really fond of them. Granted the 'old guard' were helpful to me and somewhat protective of the noob but the constant inconsistency of the arena just never felt 'right'. No offense intended. They were information overload to me and there never was a 'vibe' that I could get my mind around. I stumbled into the AVA one night and I found something that made sense (no this post is NOT and AVA ad so skip it if you feel like being a mouthpiece). I had a lot of fun in there even though I know I annoyed some of the regs. They kept their comments to themselves or at least between themselves and I learned quite a bit from them. Storch, in fact, was a guy that when it was slow would take the time to show me a thing or two I didn't know and still can't do on a regular basis.
I lived for squad nights when we flew as a team. We laughed and joked on the way to the target and fought the good fight and lived or died but it was always fun.
Life happened and I was forced to take a vacation from the game and I really didn't want to post my personal tragedies on the board so I was gone for two years.
I came back and there were some changes but none earth shattering. The one thing I have noticed is, overall, there's not as much acceptance of the new players. This disturbs me because the new target... players keep the game fresh gets frustrated and quits. Sure it's fun getting that 'kill' but isn't it more fun to teach someone up to your level so it's actually a challenge?
That is the one major thing I think this game is losing. Three years ago I could go into the TA and find 20 players and a trainer or two in there sharing information and learning. I was so regular in there I got asked on many occasions if I was a trainer. Now it's a ghost town most of the time.
So guys sit back, have a long think, and ask yourself a question or two. Sure you may be the most uber S%it hot pilet in the game but if you 'own' everybody around you in a 10 V 1 isn't that kind of boring?
How about giving something back to the game and taking the time to teach a new guy a thing or two? For that matter if you know something it's not illegal to teach a veteran player something they don't know.
Less 'chest thumping', less egos, and more making the game better and more challenging is more satisfying than my rank or score in my book.
As most of you already know I'm a clown. I look for the humor in every situation. I don't care about score, skill, or how I 'owned' you or how you 'owned' me. I do care about how I present myself to the new guy that wants to learn something and almost leaves because he was surround by smack talking, hoing, vultching, and dweeby aholes, that think accomplishing something in this game actually means something in the real world.
As I'm a horrible cartoon pilet but can make avatars fairly well at least I contribute something.

You can grow weary of the background noise ("Hey, this is competition, and I play to WIN!")

When I joined, I didn't know channel 200 or the BBS existed. I was also fortunate that early on, I learned some good advice/simple maneuvers that have stuck with me since.
Rewind back to my first month in-game...
Like all newbs, I would HO every chance I got. One day a red guy in a 110 (dastardly) was attacking a vbase. I made a head on, died, re-upped, and did it again. After the second time, he PMd me saying that the HO was a bad tactic...especially against a 110! From then on I stopped with the head ons. Another occasion around the same time, I was in TT furballing. I had an enemy con in pursuit and closing. A guy on range walked me through on how to reverse him. He said "Buster - break hard left" so I broke left and continued turning until he said "ok, now chop your throttle and pull up" So I did, and when I rolled back over, I was on the red guy!
Moral of the story is, I was in the right place at the right time. Guys like that seem few and far between. Thankfully I never got caught up in the BBS or ch. 200 early on. :)

methinks we 'vets' need to up our efforts to assist the newer players or the returning players more often

there are a lot of the bullies behind a keyboard that just don't stop, and it snowballs into a large group that taunt and prod and it gets way out of hand, even in the forum posts it seems that the insulting one liners, purse fight pix, and general comments that add ZERO to a forum thread are the order of the day and it happens over and over and it usually are the same people that tend to ruin game play in the arenas.

it's how the new players are being taught i think has alot to do with how the game is changing, New players are being taught good habits and very bad habits, some bring other types of playing styles from other types of games thinking that will work here, some use HO as there only shot, some just spray and pray, some game the game, some just fly in a horde feeling that's the best tactic to survive, some will only fight with a 6 to 1 odds, the list just goes on and we all know that, It's when i see long time vets try to help change there playing styles or offer some advice alot of the times its meet with negative responces, that's what bugs me the most and also squad CO's of all squads making sure the game is played to some kind of standards and fairplay that helps the game grow
new players are like a breath of fresh air to this game, how they are taught and treated is the deciding factor in them staying long term :salute

Guilty as charged.
I'm not a fan of chest thumping on the boards. Never have been never will be. I, personally, think it's the sheerest form of lameness to bring your 'successes' to the board and taunt another player in public. It's a free country and you are welcome to do whatever you like. Conversely I am free to look at and see it as an attempt to garner attention for yourself and humiliate another player publicly.
Flip the situation around. Would you like to be on the receiving end of such a post?
In regards to the mods. He's around and, while he is patient, his patience has it's limits.

Thanks for trying Sim. I think one of the things that makes it harder at times is the crowd is larger and it's harder to discern welcoming voices within the overall noise.
I don't believe there are less good folks in the game, and I don't believe there are less trying to help. They're just stretched thinner. One of the things that is encouraging to me is the number of folks who have grown into the game. If you look back at many of the folks on the boards, as an example, you'll see many 'mouths' have grown out of that part and have taken on a different role both in how they play and their willingness to share the wealth. This is also true of many in the arenas if you pay attention long enough.
As long as folks who've been around a while continue to do this, there will be folks in the next wave and the one after that who will pass that on, just as it was shown to us way back when.
Guess that's my way of saying keep the faith :aok

Well, like I said in a previous post, tons of folks went way out of their way to help me when I first joined the game and still do to this day. I'll keep helping anybody that needs it for as long as I'm around. Even helping somebody sort out the radio and the dot commands is doing something :)

Not saying that I am 100% innocent, but Sim is right. Not that I have been here as long as many of you, but I think 5+ years of playing AH makes me somewhat of a vet. I think we should try to embrace those that want to learn and help expand the place that many of us call home. This is like a home for me, I enjoy the company of many of you. Over the last couple of years I have learned a lot from all.
Ex:
1)Its more fun to work for a kill then just go for the HO.
2)I love P-38s, I just can't fly those darn things. Thanks Dan and other SAPPs, I still remember my first flights with you guys.
3)I enjoy skinning cartoon airplanes, I'm just average; but I thank Fencer, Krusty, Oboe, Cactus, ect ect for helping.
4)Even on my worst day, I can log onto AH and find good company
5)I still find it gratifying to land multiple kills in a 51B. When I was new I flew the D, as it became easier to kill in it, I moved on to the B.
6)A good white knuckle, palm sweating fight will always bring me back.
7)I appreciate the time trainers spent with me early on (WideWing spent a lot of time with me)
8)I feel claustrophobic in 109s.
9)Most of the time, its better not to type what you are thinking.
10)Have fun with the people you know and meet the ones you don't.

No offense, and again I'm not saying I am an angel, but I find this to be very ironic coming from you. I can recall my early days of AH (when you were Tripl5) of you screaming on vox about how everyone in AH are idiots. And most recently a post about Reaper.
