Like Strip said, I have no doubt this is probably true. My Dad grew up in coal mine country back in Kentucky and he tells me stories like this all the time.

I was raised in the 70's, and I remember a Assembly at school warning us against playing with blasting caps. They also showed us what old dynamite, and what blasting caps looked like.

This reminds me of the stories my dad used to tell me about him and his friends using trash can lids as shields and throwing old blasting caps at each other.
