Title: Monitor Envy
Post by: Dichotomy on January 29, 2011, 05:03:16 PM
I honestly feel bad.

My room mate has always leered at my monitor and I've espoused it's greatness many times.  He's a WOW guy and today he went and bought this years version of mine (42" Samsung plasma).  We've been jacking with it since noon and cant get it to show his game correctly whereas AH is beautiful all of the time.  I've been internet searching and even posted in the tech support forum trying to help him out.  Now he's off to see if using an HDMI cable will help sort him out after I called Samsung tech support.  I really hope this gets him taken care of or I'm going to feel like a jerk.

Still have to giggle at the monitor envy though  :devil

It always seems funny when your's is bigger, Dicho. But have some compassion for him, especially if he's having trouble getting his to work right.

I do man.. I actually feel bad because he's having so many problems with it and I recommended it to him.  He has a date later and I'm considering going in there and, with the help of the fine people of AH, fix the dang thing for him.  Downside is I know jack about Windows 7 and he's running an Nvidia I think he said 450?

Might just be a bad specimen, I just had to return a Sony 40" lcd due to malfunctioning straight out of box. Regular tv would show just fine but hdmi cuts out and glitches.

:rofl :rofl I knew I could count on you guys.

Honestly I'm baffled.  His video card is newer than mine but if his desktop looks right his WOW setting look like fecal matter.  I'm about to post his dxdiag in the tech support forum because I'm at my wits end.

Bit of an obvious question but what is his resolution settings for WoW?

If I'm remembering their UI setup correctly all the UI settings and quickslot placement area positions/sizes are stored on their server, not the users PC and thus he would have to resize his UI elements in game after adjust the game resolution. Screen shots would help.

Unless he was using DVI, which seems unlikely, the HDMI could help.  But it also sounds like a case of video card resolution not set to monitor resolution, resulting in scaling.  He should make sure that isn't the case.  A 42" is pretty big, is it actually a TV?  My experience has been that TVs act as poor computer monitors, especially for gaming.  But I haven't tried this with a newer TV, so I could now be wrong.

Many current tv's give an excellent computer image, the problem with them is usually input lag. Especially the '100hz' or '200hz' models can have a horrible lag because they use image processing to calculate extra frames between actual frames in order to reduce jerkiness of movement. Which is also why you should use the 'computer' mode in your TV if it's connected to one.

No wonder I get slaughtered. I'm still using a 21" LCD and thought I was doing pretty good. :old:

i think id like to get a bigger monitor for my computer, stupid wife wont allow me to hook it up to my 73" in the living room. On another note my pops gave me a 40" vizio he had for a yr which stopped workin and went and bought another one.  I did some research and wound up fixing it with a 20 cent resistor that i soldered on to the power board. was gunna use that one as a monitor but such i nice tv i put it in my bedroom lol. Then my little bro gave me a 32" viewsonic (i think) but it doesnt have a power cord. It takes a really weird power cord that is like $40 and i dont even know if the thing works.

I've used my 42" as a monitor for over a year with no problems.  I'm honestly baffled.  Oh and we screwed around with all of the settings both in game and out. I even went as far as to dl WOW and, on my screen, it looks great.  Hmmmmmmm

What exactly is the problem with the in game graphics?

when the graphics look 'decent' (I won't say good) the text is small, fuzzy, and difficult to read.  When the text is legible the vice is versa.  It should propogate to fill the screen correctly and I'm at my wits end with it.

Forcing anisotropic filtering on causes AH2 text go fuzzy, check that in display driver settings. It shouldn't be on. Secondly you should run the game at the maximum resolution the screen can support (i.e. 1080p).
