Title: Youtube has gone to hell...
Post by: Krusty on January 30, 2011, 09:20:37 PM
Okay, so I can no longer log into Youtube without "linking" it to my e-mail address... It wants to link to a yahoo address I have. Hell with that! I'm no freakin' crop for their info farming attempts. I'm not going to be bought or sold dadgummit.

If anything I'll create a dummy account...

What do I have to do? Simple as creating an account? Nope... I can't. While it was more than eager to link my YAHOO account when it thought it was the correct one (the e-mail I used to set up the youtube profile) it now won't accept a new yahoo account... Okay, so dummy setup wasted. It only wants GMAIL accounts.

So I set up a dummy GMAIL account, right? Wrong! I set up the dummy GMAIL account only to find the last screen is....

wait for it...

They won't create the account til they send my phone a text code verification.....

Doubleyou Tee Eff?

Youtube has gone to hell. Apparently the corporate hoods at Microsoft got ahold of them. I mean they own it sure, but now they're dictating policy.

The hell with that.

Is Vimeo still up or did they get shut down too? What are the other options?

Not real sure what's going on. I have noticed an increase in scorn with Youtube with all the comments people put up. Ads, pop ups, and stuff you mentioned above.

Google owns YouTube.  I use a Google account for a lot of my online stuff, I love the convenience of it.

Krusty, you're doing it wrong.

Kazaa, I've had a youtube account for a while now. Only recently has it started all this BS. I can't even log in any more because of this nonsense.

Not to mention that much of the content is blocked for countries outside the US. Most of the films posted in this forum cannot be viewed in Germany because Sony/UMG/WTF own the soundtrack.

Do not post on youtube.

I used a proxy program to get around this but for the life of me I can't remember what it was.

They just ask you to link it. You can still chose not to. I have no problems logging in by clicking on the "skip this time" option at the bottom

I pay $25 a year for Photobucket Pro and I can host videos there.  My only gripe is occasionally their 'moderators' get a bit enthusiastic about deleting files that 'violate the terms of service'.  I've tussled with them a few times over it then just gave up fighting.

That is not an option for me. As soon as I log in it takes me to this "link e-mail" screen then it says "link or log off"....

I usually use this for a temporary email Krusty to screw them...I wouldn't give them my real one either:  http://mailinator.com/

Thing is, since it's a pre-existing youtube account (not a new creation) it wants either my on-file e-mail OR a GMail e-mail. It doesn't like any other options. I don't want to lose my likes/favorites/uploads/history etc on my previous, but I think after this fiasco I'm done with their crap.

Anybody know another (or a better?) online service?

Ahh, I understand!  I guess you could create an additional Gmail email accnt. just for them.  But I do agree, they've become very intrusive and obnoxious with their ads.   :bhead

So let me get this right Krusty, you forgot your e-mail accont?

Vimo is 2nd best to YouTube.

No Kazaa, you got it wrong. Re-read original post.

I guess I'll set up a vimeo account, then. Thanks for the tip.

You cannot create a new GMail account without supplying them with your phone number, so they can text you the activation code. That's far too much an invasion of privacy for my tastes. Soon they're going to need a credit card number and a bank account -- not to take anything out, no, just to "validate" your age and residence....

It's going in a bad direction.

Krusty not that I doubt you but since when?  I made one two weeks ago without supplying a phone number

I tried a couple this past week.

Note, however, that the youtube problems only popped up in the past 2-3 weeks as well. I would hazard a guess they're tied to each other (since both services are owned by the same info-stealing company)

EDIT: To clarify: They ask for the phone number. The credit card info is a pessimistic prediction of future events to come.

About 2 weeks ago Youtube changed their policy or some crap like that where you have to link your youtube to an email. I went through the same thing Krusty went though, when I logged in I had to link the account or log off. Of course I tried to link my yahoo account which didn't work, and I don't own a gmail account. So right now I just surf youtube without an account, but I can understand Krusty's problem as he actually has videos to care for.

Must have been very recent then.  Sorry to hear it.  Like I said I just upload them to my photobucket account and it works just fine.  Or if you've got a friend with server space you might be able to get them to host your vids.

Just roll your face over the keyboard when they ask for personal info. :D

Linking an e-mail to Youtube isn't needed, there is a "Skip for now (we'll remind you again later)" button at the bottom you can click.  I haven't seen it warn me since I signed in (stay logged in), and haven't had any issues.

Maybe you don't have anything uploaded? Mine says I cannot continue without linking my account. It says there is no option, I must link it "for enhanced security reasons"....

Stupid google people...   :bhead

I have a single video uploaded, maybe I just don't upload enough for it to care about me. :)

gee Krusty I've got a ton of 'throwaway' email accounts even a gmail one or two if you need one.  PM me

I'd still go the photobucket or server route though.

Yeah, seems that Youtube went mainstream and sold themselves out to advertising and the such.
I think I linked my old AOL e-mail, haven't had any problems signing in after that.

I think YouTube went mainstream about 5 years ago.  :lol  Ads are nothing new on the internet, especially on a free site.

Do not post on youtube.

It's no better for Americans either. I have over 1,000 videos favorited. Over half of them are music videos or related to music. Went through my favorites list a few weeks ago, and amazingly it only took me 30 minutes to watch all the videos since nearly everyone has been blocked/removed/or audioswapped. Even some bands from America are blocked! Some of my all time favorite songs I can no longer listen to unless I can find the album to purchase, but most every band I like is nearly impossible to find in America.

It almost feels liek YouTube is trying to control the music industry (American Music nowdays is terrible, but the Europeans still know what music really is)

It isn't so much Youtube trying to control the music industry, as it is greedy record labels
afraid people will be able to hear music for free, gasp!

Latrobe, if you have an iTunes account, search for Hole in the Sky by Delmag. Americans
can still make music, it's just garbage that's become the mainstream. There are tons and
tons of hidden gems in American music, the tricky part is finding those gems sadly enough.

I used to have that, and always hit 'skip for now', but just a week or two ago that option was gone, and they had a note saying that you now had to link them.  I was like 'wtf' and did it anyway...

Yes, I've been able to find a few good American bands. It's extremely hard to find them, but luckily not all of America has been brainwashed yet. I won't ever make an iTunes account, or use any Apple products though, I just don't like their stuff. Maybe it's just personal preference, but I find iTunes has too many unnecessary things that could be far more simplified. Again, it may all just be personal preference, but I'm just not an Apple fan.

They took that option out about 2 weeks ago, now when I try to log into my old account it either link it or log back out, there's no option to do anything else.

You cannot create a new GMail account without supplying them with your phone number, so they can text you the activation code.

I didn't know that.  Wonder what happens when you have 'text block' on as I do?  Guess no activation huh!?

but then it doesn't get you the code to activate it. since i won't give my cell number to anything like that, i gave my shop number. that way if they do sell the number, no sales people will ever get me anyway. i'm never "me" on the shop phone, till i know who i'm talking to.  :devil

well that's why i used the shop phone. anyone can call here and ask for me. i am the only one here to answer the phone. but i'm never here till i know who i'm talking to. if it's a sales rep i don't want to talk to, i tell them "he won't be interested" and hang up. poll takers....i just hang up without saying anything to em at all.......
