Were screwed this go around, especially in my part of IL. Worst case we can see 3/4 an inch of freezing rain before its all over. Id rather have the 16+ inches of snow at least I would still have power, trees, and other aerial objects that the ice and 40+ winds will bring down
-
I'm up in the 16+ inches area. We haven't had a really big snow this year. (when I was a kid it seemed like non-stop snow from December to March.) Half of me is looking forward to it because I find it beautiful, the other half is dreading it because I must go to work on Wednesday morning, so no snow day for me. I'll be out of the house by 5:45am so it will be nice sharing the road with no one but the snowplows. I'm glad I still got the wrangler for 1 last season.
-
I'm in Kentucky, I am truly sorry for you folks. 48 degrees and just a bunch of rain for us.
Stay as safe as you can. <S>
-
I'm hoping the trees haven't recovered too much from the 2006 storm . . .

We are bracing for a blizzard tomorrow in lincoln.
No one has it worse than illinois though.
-
Awaiting freezing rain here in Ohio. I prefer snow over freezing rain IMO.

We are getting it now. 14 degree with 30 mph wind, snow and ice. Love it
-
It was 75 degrees here over the weekend. Right now outside it's pouring down sleet, like a hard rain, but it's all sleet. At least an inch of the little ice pellets out there right now. Supposed to get 10-12 inches of snow on top of this.
Still going to have to go to work tomorrow too.
-
We've been lucky so far here in Michigan this year. If, and I say if we get what they say we're going to this will be our biggest storm of the year. I only say if because a few years back they were saying the same thing about the country and no one even got a dusting! So, that's what I'm going with due to the fact that too many people are stupid here when it comes to big snowfalls!
-
This one is running south of the Dakota's, so its missing us by a mile. All we have is the cold and the wind feeding it from the back side.
Hang tough out there!

Purdue just canceled classes. Purdue "never" cancels classes. The last snow day was four years ago. The one before that was in 1999, before that was 1994, and before that was 1984. So that makes this only the 5th time in 30 years. And tomorrow the conditions should be far worse than they are right now.
So all that time studying yesterday for my OBHR exam today... wasted! Whatever shall I do?
-
Nice glaze on everything here this morning, maybe .06" worth of ice. Roads seem clear but forcasting up to 1/2" of freezing rain accumulation on surfaces today. Temp was at 32 at 6 but 30 here at 7:15am.
-
St. Louis just got hit with a blizzard warning. 10-20" of snow projected in our area.
-
Why all this crazy weather this year?
-
Why all this crazy weather this year?
patterns.
it won't be this bad again for around 5 years or so....then we'll get it all over again.

Freezing rain and sleet for the last 4 hours, and now thunder sleet here in Missouri. Snowing like crazy 20 miles north of us.
-

Move up here, nothing but lots of inches of snow last night, might get some freezing rain today, but who knows.
-
Snow Sleet and FR Rain here in CenterValley PA (Near Allentown) Not much accumulation of snow, but he ice is supposed to get really bad here in the next couple of hrs 1'' forcast. Its been a real tough winter around here, It seems to snow every tuesday and wednesday. My littleones havent had a complete week of school since returning from Xmas break.
-
Been freezing rain here in Mo since about 11 am yesterday and it finaly changed over to sleet a few hours ago and suposed to change to snow by around noon. Only 10+ inches on top of a inch of ice.
Hauled 108 pallets of salt and icemelt all over the saint louis area yesterday and after a 15 hour day the stores was as empty as when i started.
Blizzard 1

Went from 80 degrees and sunny yesterday to 20 with snow and ice in central Texas today :uhoh

When will the utility companies finally realize that they MUST bury their lines?
Anyone having trouble with a blizzard can chalk it up to lack of preparedness or stupidity.
That is all, now quit whining and find a warm woman to snuggle with. (Blizzards r teh fun!)

94' was a really bad snow storm for us in that area, epically in December. Remember we had 16 days of snow fall that month.

People must be in panic mode right now. Did the state declare a state emergency and call on FEMA? heheheh
We have a lot of snow thus far, 4 degree, 25-30 mph wind. This would be the most snow we had is 2010-11 winter. Funny seeing all these small-light weight cars all over the road while i am conformable in my Jeep with 4 wheel drive. I had to push one car up a hill with my jeep.
-
Where I am the rain is freezing before it touches anything, very lucky.

I'm under this right now

Because there are is an enormous group of people who are paid to fix them.

Last check outside there is anywhere from 1/4 to 1/2" of ice outside thanks to the freezing rain. Stick your head out the door and you hear the occasional CRACKRACKRACK and the sound of heavily ice laiden branches falling through the trees. Out back have 5 pine trees and I right now have a nice assortment of limbs of various sizes and diameters all nicely strewn about. Biggest so far around 4-5" in diameter. Luckily for me it didnt take down the service drop to the house that was right under it.
Not to mention winds 10 to 20 with gusts to 30 late this evening though until tomrorow late morning. Will be lucky if I still have power by then.
-
Lightweight drifting snow last night, every school closed this morning. Clear all day, but driveway I cleared out at 0700 is half drifted over when I get home. As I re-snow blow it, my face is being pelted with wind whipped ice crystals - the sleet has started.
Supposed to get rain, then freezing rain, then more snow tomorrow. Naturally, I'm the one guy who HAS to go in no matter what tomorrow!
-
STL proper seems to have dodged the worst of it. The storm kind of split and lifted a bit north.
Yesterday it was a downpour of rain, and thankfully it had time to run off of things before it got cold enough to change over to freezing drizzle. We got mostly sleet in the immediate area on top of the thin layer of ice.
Winds haven't really hit here yet, so we are certainly not out of the woods. But so far it is not the disaster people were fearing.
-
getting pounded with sleet - clickity clackity, clickity clack.
Wind has drifted over the walk I shoveled just 3 hours ago.
-
I spent about 30 minutes chipping ice 1'' thick on my car this morning... Gonna have to do it all over again tomorrow too. This weather can suck it! :P
-
About 10% of this zip out of power according to the map, no winds to speak of yet.
Across the road they are on a different line, they been out for 3 hours now. Numerous bangs of pole mounted breakers blowing their fuses this part of town. Anyone that knows what I mean know how loud them suckers can get.
Light show 3 hours ago, watch arcing lines a block away. Stopped then the sky was alight again a few minutes later followed by buzzing then a BANG, then their power was done.
Temp been going around 31-34 back and forth from 3 to 6pm so hopefully if it did any melting it was enough to break some ice loose and hopefully come out of the trees without taking the branches along with it if the wind starts.
If nothing from me in the morning, send a generator and some boneless wings

A cousin that works for a rural co-op in Texas says it's because the lines are so much easier and cheaper to repair and maintain when they are not buried, especially when they try to find and repair lightning damage.
Only repeating what I was told. <S>

lol im stuck in Columbia Missouri, on my way home to NH, major snow here they shut down 70, the highway I was on....lol

Great in theory, but have fun finding the damaged line when you have thousands of miles of power lines buried that you can not see :aok

Where in Kansas?
-
Stalwart and Flipperk both made good points.
Perhaps high tension and rural lines could be kept airborne, but all lines within a city's limits should be subterranean.
That's what I meant.
I have pictures of what a high wind storm did here. I was so pissed that we have pole strung utilities. There is no reason for it..... wait one.
Couple years ago.... woke up at 0400 to a loud boom.

This limb was 3' at the crotch. Maple tree.

MOVE YOUR VEHICLES FROM UNDER TREES!
(Oh yeah, see the lines down? I lost internet for 3 hours. :neener: )

Ever been to White Sands, New Mexico (http://www.nps.gov/whsa/index.htm)? It has done nothing but sleet in my part of Indiana since around 2 PM Tuesday. There's now 6 inches of fine grained sleet pellets on the ground. I went for a walk a couple hours ago and it reminded me of the sand dunes at White Sands the one time I visited there. Definitely has the consistency of wet beach sand rather than snow. It could be a lot worse... north of here they got lots of snow, south of here they got lots of freezing rain.
-
Still got power at 6:30. Good part of the county was out last night but it kept. Not to see how bad the roads are.....
-
Cleveland go hit really hard, there is ice everywhere and I think every school in that star closed. Praying the power stays on lol :pray :pray
-
1/2 to 3/4 inch of ice here, I just got back in from chipping the ice off my truck, While i was out there, i heard 1 tree across the street come down (probably a huge limb). 5mins later saw a spruce limb start to fall over at a neighbors headed right for the house, luckly it hit another branch of a different tree and arc'd away from the house, missing it by a foot.
<EDIT>
Not going back out there, every minute or so its CRAAACCCKKKKKK............SLA M!!! :uhoh
SOS..........Bring beer and hot wings (Meatwad has the right idea :aok)

Classes canceled for a second consecutive day at Purdue. They were threatening to start classes 3 hours late, then 2 hours before my 10:30 class they canceled everything. Guess I'll be on Aces High again today. :)

Fair enough man! You still should have given a shout. I don't keep any on hand, but have been known to partake now and then. We could have talked drawing and painting and whatnot.

We didn't get too much ice around here but ended up with around 12-15 inches of snow.
-
