Yes. The forums have been acting a bit strange as of late. I'm curious to know if perhaps the forum usage has increased. More forum activity going on and it is causing some network latency.

IIRC...the forum server isn't at HTC it's a different company.

Rolling blackouts across Texas.

Apparently we don't have the capacity to power everyone's heaters.  A/C manages to stay on during the summer just fine though.

I was shocked at how many subdivisions in the Houston area were all electric, including heat.

All of the natural gas must be shipped up north.

Nope.  The BBS server is at our Grapevine office.  We suffered a power outage this morning and it took a bit to get the gas generator up and running.

Well...no poop!  Does that mean the "Free Forums" company is also an offshoot of HTC?

If the forums go down, you have a risk mitigation plan @

Just a warning, you will need a Man Card and thick skin. Ex- and current Cartoon pilits without censorship.
Estrogen-types might want to stay away.

Last time the generator was tested was? Almost everything was hard starting up here today. I just stayed home. No need to go out with -30 wind chills.

Just how many 7-11 burritos did it take to get Pyro primed?

Honda 2000 or something bigger?

I've been eyeing those *Honda 2000's but my gosh, at nearly $1000 brand new, I am kinda keeping my eyes open for a used one on Craigslist. (*For dry camping with the RV....we already have a Generac 7000 watt built in for the house)

It's the distribution deals worked out, someone over or under estimated for this year.  In the summer, the north half of the country barely uses A/C while the south depends on it.  During winter though, the north depends on heating while the south rarely needs it.  At any time and point when severe weather is effecting both the north half and the south half of this country we're stretching the power thin.  I'm thinking California is making a killing on electricity exports this week.

They are pricey, but with some regular TLC they last forever.... _forever_.  Same with Honda pumps.  And if something does break on them, chances are you got the tool already to fix it, just gotta order the replacement part.  Only thing I've had to replace in the last ten years on our little Honda geny was the fuel shut-off valve (and the downstream fuel filter for good measure), one of the O-ring seals in it went the way of the dodo (thus my reconing for a new filter as I'm sure most of the disintegrated O-ring was floating around in it), took less than a week for the one i ordered online to show up and ten minutes to replace and fire it up.

Been rock solid so far.

Hmmm....  guessing then it's a Xantrex?  Only manufacturer of Inverters that I can say I love.  What happened, loose it's ground, someone forget to flip the generator switch to "auto" (what I always do since I prefer to run the geny "manualy" and as needed), or did Pyro forget to refil the tank after the convention guys got done scrounging around for get-home gas to cyphon out of the parking lot?   :D

We have to store the generator in the office and pull it outside to use it.  I was the lucky one who got in first.  Drug it outside, ran the cables and started it up.

Getting a permanent setup outside is cost prohibitive due to all the permits and code requirements.

Oh do make sure you have it grounded and are careful skuzzy, I had a "fun" time once with a barely-loose 30-amp plug after ariving in the middle of the night somewhere and having to drag the geny out, hook it and fire it up in about 8-inches of snow.

I'm curious about what it is in the code and requirements though that make it an overpriced chore since it sounds like you guys have the equipment already.  Need to pull a new electrical permit and licensed electrician to install it?  Need to supply backup power for "all critical" services in the building if attempting to supply power to just a single service?  I understand it can be one (or more) of many issues with the local codes and regs.  Maintenance, security (of the equipment) and running costs of the more mobile and labor-intensive settup you have now to supply backup power to specific systems might just be the best choice.

I'm privy to this knowledge because my family has a mountain vacation place that is off the grid, so we use a combination of solar and generator power to get the juice we need (with a smaller independent system for just our water/well, and long story short, is how I've come to conclude you spend money for the Xantrex inverters or nothing).  I drag out our Honda from the shed and hook it up to the main system's inverter for 99% of our generator power needs (usually to top-off the batteries every day in the winter, or if I'm running some heavy electrical equipment in the light-plentiful summers), just because it's cheaper to run and maintain (and if something major breaks on it, I can take it home with me to fix and then take back), but we have a permanent propane-powered generator that when we built the place got us our certificate of completion/occupancy.  Propane generators are expenciver and cost more to maintain, but if I set it to "auto" it's kick-in and start-up time is near instant when it detects and outage or the battery loads are too low.  Their source of fuel (and means of storing it) though is probabley their one major upside though, you can get a large-capacity outdoor above-ground tank without any hastle (other than the cost, lol) and the effective-lifetime of the fuel is longer too (so if you don't use up all the propane in the tank within 5-years, no problem).

One of my ideas that I think is ahead of it's (feasabley reasonable and economic) range are permanent solar backup power instalations for commercial aplications.  Basicaly it's a system large enough to handle the limited services that need constant power, so in comparison to a complete 24/7 solar system it would be just a fraction: a small inverter, a couple batteries and a pannel or two on the roof.  The idea being 1% of the time it provides the limited backup power you need and keeps the batteries charged and 49% of the time it's generating power to go into the grid and generating some revenue (and ~50% of the time, the sun will be down).

When in doubt, put a big @zz solar panel on your roof to charge battery's. My dad works for Windstream and is the head of it in my city. He says that if the lines break or loose power alot of the eastern seaboard will loose phone's and internet. There's a huge generator outside that comes on seconds after a power outage.

^^ If anyone needs solar or wind power in or near the KC area, I'll hook ya up with my BIL. He's a good guy, fair price, and about 5 years in the biz.
