We have to stop the next global Ice age! http://www.helium.com/items/2083868-magnetic-polar-shifts-causing-massive-global-superstorms
Seriously, all signs point to THIS and not global warming bs.
-
omg! so we need to rip up all of our current climate models and start again from scratch!
... unless we've already known about geomagnetic reversal and been studying it for 100yrs, and already included it as one of the huge number of variables in said models.

Not only the reversal but stopping of rotation wobble and other signs listed in the article, every sign for the next ice age is present.
-
indeed, anyone with even a passing interest in climate change knows an ice age is imminent, preceeded by rising temperatures. thats one thing we can all agree on.

I live in Texas, I'm safe from the ice age. Haven't you ever seen The Day After Tomorrow?

Yuup, I'm fine as well.

I'm gonna say that most of the U.S. isn't worried about global warming but would probably welcome the warm temp!!! I know i'm ready for it to warm up..
It's been way to cold here in Texas for me lol

want to trade? it feels like early summer out here and it is FEBRUARY! I love the cold/rain/snow. You guys should be thankful.

I can grow food when it's warm, and "experts" say there will be more moisture in the air if it warms up, which is also good for growing food.
Can't grow anything when it's cold.
I say throw another log on the fire.
For a somewhat toungue-in-cheek look at one possible future where the environmental whackos actually get their way but it backfires horribly, read Jerry Pournelle and Larry Niven's "Fallen Angels", available for free here: http://www.webscription.net/p-137-fallen-angels.aspx

I disagree, the whackos portrayed there are to us what Al-Qu'aeda is to Islam, the Nazis are to the GOP, and the Communists are to the Liberals. It's the little changes that can add up quickly- using energy efficient lightbulbs, investing in better insulation, and walking around town (fewer changing of lightbulbs, a nicer house, and buns of steel are only some of the benefits).

You say that because you're a flightless bird that lives in the snow. The rest of us need warmth to live. We can all live with less pollution, but plants grow better with high temps, high humidity, and high CO2 levels. I'll take a little warmth over another ice age anyday.
CO2 is NOT a pollutant nor a toxin. It's required for both plants and animals to live.

not entirely true. more moisture means more storns and rain. more rain means crops can/will be washed out.

I need water to live but don't last too long at the bottom of a lake.

you make that sound like an either/or choice - it isnt. regardless of what we do, it will get warmer, and then we will enter the next ice age.
the thing that we might be able to change is how much quicker the temps rise, ie. how much sooner the next ice age arrives.

Someone tell me...what exactly IS the optimal temperature for the earth?

Someone tell me...what exactly IS the optimal temperature for the earth?
@ 12 deg N. or lower......
Ambient temp: 72 deg. with a sea-breeze at a constant 5-10 mph
Temp of left hand: ~40 deg, while wrapped around a bottle containing some sort of fermented barley beverage
Temp of right hand: same as ambient temp, while holding a cylindrical or cone shaped object, the end of which is burning @ ~ 451 deg.
Temp of feet: slightly less than ambient temps, as they would be halfway buried in the sand and not in direct rays of the sun
Carry On

thats like asking what is the best speed for a car.

the natural one which we are not at

CO2....makes the planet greener! :old: :)

That blanket statement just isn't true. You can easily run into situations like the US south east experienced in 2009, where some corn farmers reported 80% losses due to constant moisture during harvest. Aflatoxins, disease, and other problems crop up when the environment is too warm and wet for a given plant. Onions, potatoes (and many other tubers), several crucifer family plants, (broccoli, cauliflower, kale, etc) and others actually do a lot BETTER with an annual freeze, as it helps mitigate some of these problems.
Now all in all, hot and humid is better than frozen -- no doubt. You can after all always change your plantings. However, you need to be careful with such sweeping statements about something with as much variety as agriculture.

Optimal temperature for the earth... there isn't one.
Optimal temperature for the species to which you presumably belong...
Species: Homo sapiens (endothermic)
Normal Body Temperature: 37.0 C
LCT: 27.0 C
UCT: 32.0 C
27.0C to 32.0C (environmental) is the thermal neutral range of our species. In that range is where metabolic rate is minimal, and animal is at basal metabolic state.
LCT= lowest critical temperature. Lower than this, each individual passes into threshold points for hypothermia
UCT=upper critical temperature. Higher than this, each individual passes into threshold tolerances for hyperthermia
Hate to bring biology into it, but asking what temperature is right for the earth is the wrong question.
You figure out the difference.

It was rhetorical...
Since I have to spell it out, my point is that there isn't one...there's a range, as you so eloquently state.
