Title: Non Gaming Build

OK, So this one is a bit tough for me since I prefer to do gaming systems.  Looking for something to surf, as well as doing mild video editing, play DVD's and hold a LOT of pictures/videos.  Gaming is limited to POGO and kids games.

2 1TB HD's will do just fine with the pics and kids games

For the use you describe, look at an i3 with the new intel on-chip graphics. You could almost halve the cost.
 
Last Fall I built an HTPC just to use up some spare parts. Used an intel mobo (H55 i think) and i3-540. Slapped in a BD burner and just plugged it into an HDMI port on my receiver.
 
Didn't expect much, but have been Astonished how well it works. Except for the burner, max power is 34 watts for the whole box. Encodes/decodes great, streams HD vid and bitstream audio with no tweaks. Kids love it and we hardly ever turn the cable box on now.

a bit of overkill for a system designed according to your description of it's purpose...  :O

lower end 1 gb video card would save some money...

amd quad core cpu would save some money...

1066 ddr2 would save some money...

500 gb drive for os and apps would allow for a higher quality drive and save some money...

take the savings and buy a big 32+ inch monitor for your game system...and put your current monitor on the new system

what about this one.  and it has water cooling.  actually it will play ah too, i am sure.  its 786 plust tax/shipping.  you can upgrade a little or go with another one that costs 200 bucks less.  just something to think about.

Sandy Bridge build looks shweet, but he's NOT getting one before I do.   :neener:


So I changed it up a bit and am now looking at AMD again.  Leaning towards this combo:

Video card would be an option at this point since the on-board should surf web just fine.  I added a Blue-Ray player, I wonder if the on-board will be OK.  Anyone?

I don't like or trust inboard video on the motherboard. Just my $.02 worth.
