Caught on the buildings security camera:

Pretty much a textbook vapor cloud explosion from the moment he hit. He was a member of my owners group (www.cirruspilots.org (http://www.cirruspilots.org))

WOW!! I think I am sorry I asked to see that. Front of that plane just crumbled. Wings hit and fuel everywhere.
Any word on the cause of the crash?

I don't know how long the drop was or if the pilot was even conscious during it, but at least the end was quick for him.
RIP.

This was a flight school 101 screw up. The pilot side door popped open slightly. He became focused on trying to close it while at pattern alt. Maxes out the AOA, cross controlled stall to spin. The end result was 90 knots into the ground. Completely unnecessary had he ignored the totally tubular door AND flew The plane like we are taught.

That's some scary stuff

That's terrible! I appreciate your reminder to us pilots, Wolfala. We often forget something insignificant is just that, insignificant.

drastic crash. <S> to the family n friends of the pilot.
we recently had a plane crash near our village, ELIM.
pilot was flying extremely low in low visibility, very foggy out, we saw him fly by. sad next day we drove by where he crashed w his buddy not 100ft below him. twice. the guy who spotted the wreck was 1 mile behind me when the fog lifted behind us the guy spotted the wreck. sad day. for the family and friends of the 2 who lost their lives that day. theres more details that i cant say, cause we witnessed the plane flying by one day then the next seeing the wreckage. <S> to the family

The commercial before the story is for an accident attorney? Call Goldberg & Osborn if you've been injured in an accident!

Darn that's real tough then. Was he still a student in a school bird? If so then I bet his instructor is having a tough time of it.
I don't know how many times a door has popped on me on takeoff. The old tomahawks would do it on occasion and on a very infrequent basis my old Comanche popped a door. Noisy as all get out but just fly the plane and put her on the runway so you can secure it. The bird will fly fine with the door open. It's really spooky with a Cessna 152 when it's your door that pops. Kinda chilly in the winter too. Darn tight cockpit in those things.

I dont know jack about posting links but if you google or on yahoo type in " plane crash near ELIM " you should see the type of aircraft and explanation of the horrific event posted.
once again <S> to the family members.

I did a series of experiments today to try and clarify some of the handling qualities of the aircraft when this happens. Did a full series of tests with the door fully open, not this 1/2 way popped toejam from takeoff, cruise, steep turns, slow flight and landings. I got close with a power off stall but around 57 indicated the door started swinging open - so there maybe a negative pressure sucking it fwd when the prop goes flat pitch which would aggravate the stalled condition. Landing was uneventful.
