Just bought me a 1982 Mercedes-Benz 280 SL (Euro)
I payed $ 1500.00 for this classic car. Runs like a top, has some Ohio rust but not that much. Wooooooooooooo

We had a same vintage 240D diesel. Try to get the seat belts SRS upgraded. Thing was a bit short on safety - though as it being a diesel, it'll die when the rest of the body rots away. Things only got 60k on it still.

Inspect your Electric fuel pump. They usually start going around 100k. Pull it and replace the hoses.

mall benzing...

Hey man enjoy the hell out of it, I have had two. In fact, this AM I was looking at 190SLs on Ebay... bit expensive for me. Nice choice as well. the SL is a car that rides like a dream and still has some straight line prettythang.... they are real good daily drivers. Congrats!
-
Seems like a steal. Does it have a massive amount of mileage or some other detriment?

Stop buying foreign cars America!!! Your s-crewing the big 3!!! :old:

Hahahaha so true Shuff! the rotor and cap for my W124 was just slightly over 100 bucks, same parts on my honda would be around 15 bucks...... :rofl :rofl
My mech. says if I want to drive a Benz on the weekends, rent 1 it's cheaper.

depends if youre talking methods then yep, but economics and quality? Things over here are pretty bad in those last two departments. It's not a line of entertainment I personaly find very appealing even for free and good quality so as ya can imagine I just leave the euro-trash versions well alone and would never spend a penny on at this point in my life.

If you guys remember the thread about my friend with the tail dragger aircraft that he wrecked in the field?
He traded the plane for this Benz, he was in a tight spot and needed the cash.
As far as I can tell it needs a lot of TLC, the heat works and it runs like a top. Body work is in the future.
I did a NADA search on it, being that it's a European model(everything is in German) and only has 107,497 miles makes it worth $15,000 as it sits. With the body work completed and a new paint job it goes up to $26,000.
I have had five offers in less than 24 hours of owning it. I found some bad arse 5 spoke AMG rims for it for around $1,000.
LOL Vonmessa, I could have guessed you would reply that way. I may sell this to get me another Jeep.

MB's have some of the worst transmissions in the Industry. Good luck!

Chick Car.
:bolt:
-
your right, chicks like rollin with the top off.
I talked with a 40+ year experience Mercedes Benz mechanic and he tells me the 280 he had went with over 1.1 million miles before he had to do anything serious to it. Apparently this is not unheard of from other Benz owners, so I don't know what the heck Masherbrum is talkin about.
The one thing the mechanic did say is that the ignitions wear out from starting a Benz before the car wears out..... :ahand :D

Just dropped the oil, added some fresh Mobil One and Bosch filter, lubed the chassis, Armor-alled the leather and topped everything off. Got just about 225 miles on first full tank of gas, or three trips to work and back home. Adding some fuel injector cleaner this tank and some super-unleaded. I was able to translate the german on the control arm and know how the cruise works now, so hopefully my fuel mileage increases. The local dealer of Jeeps said he would give me 8-K as trade in value. I just wanted to see what I could turn $1500.00 into these days........... :bolt:
-
Why did he sell it to you for only $1500, was it just because your a friend or something?
-
He needed the cash badddddddly. We didn't know what it was worth till I got home and looked it up.
-
Ebay!
-
By and large MB's transmissions are not reliable.

When I was a kid in high school my father bought an early 1960's Benz that had been under a tarp in a garage for about 15 years.
The guy had a 3rd grade education but bought the service manual and did everything from the diagrams.
After the engine and drive train were in A1 condition again he re-did the interior and then painted it dark Mercedez green.
It looked flippin' AWESOME. Except for a few interior dash knobs he was able to replicate the original to a T.
He sold it to a neighbor down the street ( a former Lt. in the Lithuanian Army who ended up digging ditches for the Germans and then got his hands on german papers and worked his way through Germany to the American lines...he always wanted a Benz).
My father cut him some slack on the price because he was a great family friend but still managed to make a tidy profit.
Last time I was back in Waukegan the buyer was still driving it....except in the winter when salt was on the roads...15 years later.
Enjoy your new ride--you deserve it. :aok
-
Keep in mind this car was driven for 107,698 miles before it was garage kept for the last 15 years.
I am still up in the air as to what to name the car. My son said call it: Wolfgang Von Scramminheini :bolt: :D

For what you paid & the miles & condition it's in I'd say you got a very good deal on it.
-
I called Mercedes Benz of Ft.Wayne and they said $350.00 for a tune up. Not bad at all.
Yea I did get a good deal......I stole it!!!! :rock

And a oil change is $80.00
I'll give you three chances to guess what brand of oil they use and the first two chances do not count LMAO :x
-
Todd I'm happy for you and all, but to find parts for this Euro engine will be nightmare. Alldata doesn't even list it.

Oil changes on that car should be very easy, even if you are not mechanically inclined. Give it a go! you can probably find a DIY guide on your specific car using Google.

It uses a cartridge oil filter. The dealer charges more because of Mobil One synthetic oil being used.
The way the service manager talked, if I have them tune it they will give me a dealio on the oil change.

Well this morning on my way to work a 300 lb. white tail deer jumped out in front of the Benz. Instantly the fuel cut off and the car coasted to a stop. Pretty damn safe car.
