Title: more trackir goodness
Post by: CAP1 on February 13, 2011, 12:52:05 PM
well.....sort of.

i think i'm feeling worse than a newbie right now. it feels like i'm taking more of a beating than i did when i first started this game. i dunno if it's so long flying the old way or what, but this isn't easy.

i've got a couple of questions though.

 rear view

everyone i've seen that uses trackir seems to have problems with this. every time i think i've got it figured out, i go into combat, and when i look back, all i see is headrest. this includes if i move my head forward a little first, as suggested.
imadot, and gpwurzel have helped me with their profiles, but i get this same thing using theirs. i dunno if it's me moving too fast or what. vinkman offered me a profile, but i can't get that to show up on the list after i drag it into the profiles folder.
even when i do have the rear view working properly in offline mode, i can't seem to get it quite as good as i have it when using the hat switch. not up high enough as i set it the old way.

transitioning from the straight up view to the forward/up and then forward views.

when i'm looking up, coming 'round on a con, as i transition to the forward/up view, i can't get it to "not" stay zoomed on the canopy frame there. i have to jerk my head, or go to full forward view, then look up/forward. this ALWAYS loses the con for me.

now granted, including 2 trips to the TA, this is only the 4th time i've flown with it. today in the TA, i've made my own profile, trying to creat as little head movement as possible. it seems to work better, as long as i keep the cons in front of my 3/9 line, but i still lose them on the merge, when i look back.

is there something i'm missing, or do i just need to keep bearing with the newness for awhile?

one thing with mine is i set it up so i can turn it off and on, (track IR)  theres times flying when i like to use the hatswitch to look back, and frankly I'm still undecided on which i prefer, after 12 years using hatswitchs I'm pretty fast with changing views to keep a constant eye on my enemy, i had the same problem with the rear view to, untill i can make it work smoother im still using the hatswitch for looking back/up

Cap, dont forget you can lift your head up a bit to help with the view behind, and recenter once you've moved forward a bit to give you a better angle to the rear.

I'll be on in around 20 mins if you want to get some practise with your views fella, lemme know.

+1

I think this is easiest and most effective way to look back. I have off, on and look behind buttons in my x52 throttle, of course it takes  a little bit practice (like learning to fly with tir), but that way you can look back as fast as turning your head and you see much better.

Be patient and soon you take no beating :aok

I've never understood this issue, I've always had much more success with the six view with TIR. The only thing I've been able to think of is that people disable the left right axis.
Turn your head, lean it to the side you want to look out and lean forward a bit. The best part about it is that you can easily look out either side unlike with the hat view where you can only look out one side and then you have to use a button and scroll over to the other, or else yaw your aircraft.

Unfortunately my TIR flips out and turns off my mouse when I plug it in now, so I can't play... it's trashed pretty much, I've had it for ~2 years and the Track Clip is held together with tape...

I have two buttons mapped to look left and back, and look right and back. Once one of the buttons are pushed I can move my head a little to look around the headrest to see what might be following.

Here's the key to track IR settings, especially the six o'clock view. While your track IR is up hit the pause button so track IR is in pause mode then set your views with the hat switch and hit F10 to save the views. Remove Track IR from pause mode and move your head around. You'll find Track IR is now duplicating the hat switch views. My six o'clock view is perfect and matches the hat switch view I used before I began using track IR. You must also check the track IR box in the AH game itself. I believe it's under preferences.

here's a question.......in the instructions, it said to put the trackir directly in line of your clip. due to this, i have mine off to the side of my monitor......in the trackir software, i have the 3 little green dots directly centered.

 was looking here.......http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/index.php/topic,257084.300.html

and noticed this gent has his mounted directly in the center of his monitor. is there an advantage to this?

Are you using a Pro clip or the reflector clip?

For refector, it's probably important to center the camera to the middle of your head because tht's where the reflector is. For pro-clip the LEDs are vertical on the left side of my head, so I place the camera so it's centered on the LEDs, which is to say I move the camera to the top left side of the monitor.

As for the profile I sent. Maybe you need to change the name. I called it AHII but that name is lested by default int he TrackIR software. So gcall it Vinkman and then look for it.

Cap I use the Pro clip and my camera sets off to the left and a little higher than my pro clip.
I've found that if the three dots are to the right side and about half way up I can look around with out stutters. If I center the the three dots I get stutters (no signal or what ever it says) when I look up and to the right, or lean to the right and try to look back.

i'll try that. my camera is off to the left as i face the monitor, and also slightly higher than i sit. i did also adjust to center the dots. i'll try moving them to see what happens.

anyone else that's considering this, don't let these problems stop you. although i'm getting slapped around in there like a little brat, i can also tell that once i figure this thing out, it will add immensely to the fun and immersion.

I have a TIR pause button mapped ... it helps on those long flights

I have my 6 view mapped from the in-game set up. It's set for press on release off and with TIR active (button pressed), I can still slide side to side for a better view. Actually, using the TIR for a 6 view works , too. Just a convenience to use either. (Oh, Corsair 6 views are still a biatch)

For firing, I have my in-game front view mapped. Regardless of TIR being active, held down, it snaps me right to the pipper view. I'll usually use the mouse pointer trick in case my spastic flying and shooting moves the pipper out of view. Similar to the mapped 6 view, TIR will still move up/down/side-to-side while the view button is held.

Mouse pointer trick = TIR active, Front view pressed/held, move tip of pointer to pipper dot and leave it there ... note with a wired mouse it may move a little on you so don't forget to recheck it.

Cap I had your problems till I turned off the "Lean R/L" setting in Tracir, also the "zoom" function, then once I set the "views" with my Hat switch and lock them in with F10 and then turn Tracir back on (shut off with the Tracir software, so the two red lights show) whalla the thing now tracks my settings with improvment.

ok. i moved the camera back a little to the left to place the 3 dots off a little.

this seemed to give me better responses to my movements like sik1 said.

i've loaded up a profile that dot was nice enough to share with me. i turned off the "Y" axis, and i turned off the "roll" axis. this seemed to help me with clearing the headrest.

i also found this write up by mace.....
http://trainers.hitechcreations.com/files/mace/Track%20IR%20PDF.pdf

according to that write up though, i should turn off "true view", and the trackir option in the view options in ah. i tried each off individually, and both off. bad idea. i think it's probably something that got changed in an update.

i did a little better, and wasn't losing cons so much tonight. i haven't flown this enough as yet to get accustomed to it, so it has to be the settings changes.

i was talking with bug in the arena. that conversation brought a couple of things to light too. besides having to "unlearn" the use of the hat switches, i also have to think about how and where to move my head to get the view i want. this takes too long in cartoon combat, and the fight is already lost at that point.

so we have
1) the curves. the speed at which your cartoon head moves from your real heads input.
2) unlearning the hat switch. this is a hard one. i won't unmap them,as if i gv, i'll need them
3)learning how/when/where to move your real head to make your cartoon head do what you want.
4) i think that the perception is different with the trackir, and if you;re not careful, you may maneuver too easily. this came to light, as i gave bug a stupidly easy kill...i asked him what i did wrong, and he mentioned that my maneuvers looked "lazy". i thought i was pulling ;round harder, but obviously wasn't.

i got lucky, and scored a couple kills tonight, but they were only because i'm a sneaky bastage.  :devil i lost more than i won, but thanks to the changed settings, i was able to keep the con in my view more, even if it was the 6 view....the point is that i was able to see him back there, as he ripped me a new butt hole, which is a step in the right direction.

i hope that these are helping some of you guys. a couple guys in the ava tonight mentioned that they'd just gotten trakirs too.

It does take a while to get used to the TIR setup (about a month or 2 depending on amount of flying), but I would not fly without it anymore. Once you get it under control you'll be able to smoothly track a con ... even B&Z over-the-tops on a group of Buffs.

I forgot about Mace's write-up. His "Gunnery" explanation is pretty much what I tried to parrot in my previous post.

I finally got my bricked 500Gb HD replacement from Seagate and installed it.  I set it up outside my RAID array to use as a scratch disk for Photoshop and as the raw footage drive for Fraps.  Sometime in the next day or two, I'll record a couple of fights to let you see what I see how I see it.

the rear view is done with optimized shoulder shifting

here is mine, i additional mapped a "reset to zero" on one of my joystick plate buttons

create a file named

Open Notepad and paste dhyran's code into it, save it with the .xml extension and you're done.

Just as he's posted it Cap, save it with a .xml extension, shove it in your profiles folder under natural point track ir and jobs a good un.

I also use a very aggressive profile (think a narrow V) so that I move my head very little. I put a small amount of dead zone in the Z axis so I don't get the head bob thing, smoothing is set to 68, and I turned roll off.
