Next time you may want to try, "Excuse me good sirs, I would appreciate if you left my thread
to those who would only like to download all of the in-game skins."

Twinboom is correct. Having all of the skins can affect performance, which is
especially important if you don't have a rig with seven thousand gigs of RAM.

Thanks, guncrasher!

nice of you to do all the work putting all the current "in-game" skins together in a complete single download, verses everyone having to go and download all the individual skins one at a time........ either manually from the skins download webpage or while online playing....

one can always check the box to disable showing other planes skins, to keep from taking a resource hit on a lower performing computer

Thanks again  :aok

As mentioned it... can affect your performance.

But it also could be fine. I run all skins. I have auto download in background always enabled. I run 512 textures on a mid-range vid card and a lower-end CPU with only 2 GB of RAM. I don't really have too much of an issue with performance. I have checked "disable skins" and haven't noticed much if any improvement, and I have played around with "disable other players' skins" etc.

It would be much more of a hit to run them full res (1042), but if you're smart you can still enjoy the other colors on the plane you're shooting down without suffering.

Edit; I think folks get into trouble with the skins download more often when they run high res, self shadow, other shadow, detail sliders maxed, FSAA on. The thing about AH is that it's scalable. You can turn that stuff off. I have to. I find the one bit of eye candy I can still enjoy without significant performance hit is the skins. This is because I'm not attempting to run it all. I have chosen what I like and worked around it. Detail sliders are default for me. FSAA is at 2x (bare minimum). I can run detailed terrain and water reflection but that's all I do.

I'll leave the other thread alone.

This is what I've found searching for performance issues:

I strongly discourage installing all the skins.  It is quite easy for them to overwhelm the resources of any computer system.

If you like losing a sure kill because your system suddenly pauses while it loads multiple skins at one time, then go ahead.

You certainly cannot preload all the skins as there is no version of Windows which will allow the game to use more than 2GB of RAM.  With this next batch, we are now well over 3GB of memory needed to load them all.

Note that was in 2009, as well. We've got a LOT more skins now than we did back then!

However, note he says you can't preload them all (which I don't enable) and they take over 3 GB... But that's a rare case where it's all skins in the game showing at once.

If you don't pre-load then yes you will get loading issues if a lot of colorful planes are flying around in visual display range. But if 90% of them use the same skins, theoretically speaking, the impact will be much less because it's using that same skin over and over, right?

Either way, practically speaking for me, skins don't kill my performance and I really enjoy winging with them or killing them. It really adds a lot to the enjoyability of the game. I think people that disable skins are missing out on more than half the fun.

How you use 'em is up to you, though.
