Title: It's a good day to be alive friends.
Post by: Melvin on February 14, 2011, 05:18:13 PM
Bones, Jack Benny and I were heading out to the ice shack this morning, like we've done for the last eight Mondays.

We decided to stop at the boat landing because Bones had to drop a deuce at the outhouse. At this point I realized that Jack Benny's back was hurting (he'd broken it in his younger days) so I decided to ride in the box while we were on the ice, thus letting him stretch out in the cab and alleviate the cramps and what not.

So there we were, cruising along the ice at ~35mph.

When all of a sudden Bones saw open water in front of us.

Being in the back, I didn't know it was coming. All I remember was being airborne and watching the auger, bait-bucket and groceries flying ten feet in the air and smashing on the ice next to the hole.

We walked away dry, with a bent rear wheel to remind us of the adventure. Three quarter ton Dodge would have sunk like a brick had we been going any slower. Thank Goodness for the Hemi. The auger even fired right up. We had to make test holes to make sure that the ice was thick enough to make the tire change. After all was said and done we marked the hole and went to the bait-shop to give a warning. Then we drank beer and feasted. (Still)

WWWWWWW I posted that sig a couple weeks ago, and it holds true today.

EDIT: 60 ft of water there.

That is exactly why I'm glad there is no ice fishing to be found in south Louisiana.  Glad all are ok though.

Glad you guys are ok.

I put a snow machine through the ice in 89 in northern Vermont.  I credit being young and in good shape to surviving along with an unimaginable will to stay alive.  Within thirty seconds of falling through, all I could do was cling to the edge of the hole.  It took thirty minutes for friends to pull me onto the ice (as it kept breaking) and another thirty to get me inside.  I spent three days in the hospital from hypothermia and severe exposure.

Holy crap Bohdi. I've met a few guys that went in the drink, but none that spent that amount of time. Thank goodness you had dedicated buds that wouldn't give up.

Last year our town lost an old-timer through the ice. He was out with his life-long fishing pal. His pal tried to hike for help, and had the unfortunate experience of listening to his pard yell his last words to God and his Family.

The ice is a dangerous place. Please use caution.

EDIT: Don't think for a minute that the old-timer gave up on his pard. He had to try for help, and he barely survived the hike.

Don't know what the big deal about ice fishing is.  As a fellow Michigander I felt it was my duty to my State to try my hand at ice fishing and I found it to be no challenge at all.  My first time out and in less than a hour I had already caught more than 20 pounds of ice.  No Sir, no challenge at all.

Ironically, I just photochopped a picture of Boxboy into that same picture the other day.
I think it fits fine in this thread.

So Lars decides to go Ice fishing one day, gets to the lake, and he's walking out with his gear. He see's sven walking around a big hole cut in the ice. Intrigued he walks up, watching sven walk in circles around a big hole.

Lars eventually can't stand the suspence, asks Sven what he's doing.
Sven says "fishing" and continues walking.
Lars just can't take the suspence and asks if he can try it.

Sven never says a word, just nods and continue's to walk around the hole.

Lars realises that every so often sven is saying something, eventually he hears it.

"9"

Sven walks, lars follows him, and every so often he hears sven say Nine.

Eventually lars gets so befuddled in his thinking he stops paying attention to his walking, he comes to close to the hole, slips and falls in, sinking out of sight.

Sven never misses a step, "10"

Well thanks for the kind words and stories gents. Some good jokes too.  :lol

Woke up yesterday feeling rather sore and scatter-brained. Was quite hungover as well.

We made sure to raise our glasses and toast the Big Man upstairs on numerous occasions.

There were a thousand ways that things could have gone wrong, but for some reason they didn't. Anyway, be careful out there. Nobody wants to be "11".
