Title: Golf Question
Post by: perdue3 on February 18, 2011, 01:03:57 PM
Anyone have a good tip involving adding yards to mid irons (5,6,7)? It seems like every time I wanna swing the 5, I end up going with a very soft 3 wood because I am afraid of my 5 iron. Anything to help ball striking with mid irons will be helpful.

I find with the mid irons most of my hits go about the same distance, just the height varies. In other words, I'm crappier than you but I will go a soft wood over an iron if I can anytime.

I was always taught that it is better to develope a single consistant swing that you use with every club (excluding some special cases).  Then changing the distance of your shot is purely a matter of switching to a different club.  Is your problem that you aren't getting the distance that you think you should be getting out of your 5 iron?  Or is it that you aren't getting the control?   Or maybe it is something else entirely?

If you don't feel you are getting enough distance, it is probably in your stance or even how you are addressing the ball.  It's really hard to say without actually watching you hit a few balls.

there are so many variables. maybe the easier fix is to do some practicing with your 5 iron...or maybe play 9 holes with just the 5 iron and a putter. great way to practice.

I'd guess you're swinging too hard with the 5-iron, leading to inconsistent contact and loss of distance. Maybe swing a little easier and concentrate on clean contact. The shaft length and loft will provide all the power you need.

Trying to swing too hard sometimes lead to throwing the club from the top also; swinging easier will help delay the release, increasing lag and thus power.

I wish I had your problem though, haven't played in months. Stupid winter.

Yes (like Norm said)... spend much more time on the range. When my irons got 'soft' while I was in south Florida and working all the time I would make daily trips to the range on the way home. If the wife makes any noise just ask her to meet you there. The range down south had a few beach areas to practice in and I got a lot of practice getting out of trouble too.

Now if you discover that a favorite club that you use frequently suddenly gets 'soft' and troublesome... replace it with a new one. They dont last forever you know.

I could watch it 100 times in a row and laugh like the first time I saw it.

Practice, practice, practice.  Try getting a consistent swing, and use that swing with every iron.  I don't think I've ever heard of someone having trouble with hitting two or three clubs the same distance.

club face on ball; feet together; no kidding. try it. your feet smack up next to ea other on range.  easy.  if your tempo lousy you fall over; it's like lag turns in golf.

Or, take a club in each hand and try to swing each of them at the same time.  Good tempo--the clubs will stay parallel; bad tempo--you will hit the other club.  Unless you have a really week arm and can't hold a golf club up...then you'll swing all over the place.

PM Stang....he's a Golf Pro. I'm sure he would be more than happy to talk to you and help you out. I've had a phone lesson from him and he helped alot.

I can't play anymore due to injury and was a +3 handicap.....Stang knows his stuff pretty well.

If your having issues with the mid irons....here's a drill to help.

Go to the range...hit 5 irons a 100 yards....same with the 6 and 7..  Your tempo will get better and better as you try to hit them each 125...then 150....

where are u setting up the ball in your stance?

try this, go the range and lay 3golfballs in a row from the center of your stance to your front foot, lookin down should be like this.....  OOO . the far right should be lined up with the middle of your stance place, use this position for  low irons 7-pw. the middle should be 1 ball width from center (6i-3i) and the left should be 2 ball widths (5w-driver). im by far no means a pro, but this helped me. :salute
