Didnt the Shermans have a smoke round that was fired like the panzer's smoke round ?
-
M89
75mm White Phosphorus smoke round
-
I think you are talking about firing it from the cannon itself correct? The Sherman's smoke rounds are fired via mortar, hence that "phuump" sound and have a shorter distance of travel.
-
I know the 75mm had a designated round (as Blooz pointed out). If it was standard issue, I'd like to see an option for it to be taken, even if in low numbers.
-
"shemans tank's smoke"? you spelled sherman wrong on the title [/hijack/]
anyways it was fired by mortar as way said.

learn how to spell

The squeakers are restless and angry today.
Show me the mortar please.
Curious.

The M32 Recovery vehicle, based on the Sherman, had an 81mm mortar for throwing smoke. I think this is where the confusion lies. Looks like a tank (Hey! It's got tracks! Must be a tank!) but is for recovery crews.

Blooz/wrongway, I think they are talking about the smoke dischargers on the sides of the turret, as shown on this model.
My recollection is that the British used them much more often than the US, so our Firefly has them (which is fine). But our US Shermans do not carry smoke rounds for the main guns, and they probably should have the option for them as the Panzer does.

That's what I had in mind but I've seen them primarily on German tanks.

I've always thought of Allied smoke in a full sized shell and German as the above.
Maybe they have it backwards in game?

Interesting model but I don't see smoke dischargers mounted on real WW2 Shermans in photos.
I do however see them on almost every photo of Israeli M50/M51 Super Shermans. Perhaps this is where they get the idea from?

I agree that it is difficult to find pictures of shermans that are 1) of high quality of 2) a tank in combat rather than a static display that 3) isn't so incredibly cluttered as to make any possible smoke discharger easy to see. But, this page (http://books.google.com/books?id=NbmtnAc8lCcC&pg=PT9&lpg=PT9&dq=sherman+with+smoke+discharger&source=bl&ots=CB-Guo1FNp&sig=s5TTxH58E8SRfB3iu-qdIAb_Uxc&hl=en&ei=c65lTfLGIs61twf76oixBg&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=5&sqi=2&ved=0CDEQ6AEwBA#v=onepage&q&f=false) has a pic of a 1944 Sherman with an "experimental" smoke discharger attached, so we know the US was at least toying with the idea, and could very well have been deployed by war's end.
This looks like the gun is of wwII vintage, but I think it is a re-enactor's vehicle.

There is also this link I found, showing a technical manual in April 1944 according to the caption (can't get the image to work). If you can read the small print, to the left of the picture in the large list pointing to the turret there is a reference to a "smoke bomb thrower." I think that might be something a little different, though.

And then there is this page of the 2nd Polish Armored Division while in Italy.

Note the smoke dischargers in the tank in the foreground.
But, again, beside the point of the OP that the Sherman really should have smoke shells for the main gun.
