Title: Naming films
Post by: muzik on February 20, 2011, 12:56:23 AM
Ive lost a lot of good films because they get deleted if you use the same name more than once. At the very least we need an overwrite notice to avoid this. But this is really not the main problem. The autoname function is great if you dont mind watching your films to know whats in them.

I try to organize my films, but I cant do that while online for fear of overwriting good films. So I save files with auto "film###."

I open up films file offline and go through them. I like to know what plane Im flying, where Im at (DA, MA, Duel,) and any other relevant info at a glance. I put the type of plane before the film### and end up with a hundred files named "38 film###." Once you change the name at all, AH doesnt recognize it as "film###" anymore and starts the count over again.

So eventually I will have to go through a new batch of films. Now I end up with a new film labeled "film444" and it just so happens that I was flying a 38 in this film. I already have film labeled "38 film444." Now I have to change the name and the number.

I dont want to have to figure out unique names for every film while Im online or sort through hundreds of films offline. I would rather type 38L and save. And not have to worry about overwriting another good film.

What is needed is a time and date stamp in the autosave file name instead of the "film###." Instead of film444 it should be 021911659 monthdayyeartime.

right click on your film folder select view>details.  date modified is what you want showing.

I label mine as I save them with date and info ie: "2-21 3x 109k4" meaning 3 kills in a 109K4 or "2-21 shiv 109k4" meaning Shiv killed me again while I was in a 109K4. I try to go through my films weekly so I remember a bit of what I wanted to look at in each film with that small amount of info. Even if they pile up for a few weeks I can puzzle out most of them.

Been there done that. And "h" probably wiped out a better film with a great fight I REALLY wanted to save.

I do something similar. But that still doesnt solve the problem. What if you fight shiv again and the details are all the same? Are you going to remember that you already have a film with that name or are you going to minimize AH to look through your files to see if you do? If you dont AH will overwrite that file unless you move them to a different folder.

I dont know about you, but I try to use the same format for the name. For example, I put the name of the plane I was flying first so that all my 38 films are grouped together. Then # of kills, etc. It doesnt take long for the details to start repeating themselves. Even if you pick a random name from the sortie, it is not unlikely that you will end up overwriting a film some time.

I dont really want to see the time date stamp in the name field. If it could be programmed so that AH (more likely windows) recognized files are NOT a duplicates just because it has the same name as the others, that would be ideal. But I think that is a function of windows file protocols (if thats what you would call it) which of course is out of our hands.

I think the only alternative is that AH uses the time/date instead of "film#." Then there is no way of overwriting films unless you wipe out the auto name to choose a different name. Plus all I would have to do is type a 38 3(kills) in front of the time/date and Im back in the air.

I know I could type in all these details myself, but like I said, I dont want to spend my play time naming files or have to go back and do it later. And even if I do it later, I have to move the files into a different folder so that AH doesnt overwrite them. It's a big PITA.

Awesome you don't care, but some of us do make movies, so films are needed.

I run into multiple name, I get a lot of "HOed by LA" in which the second becomes "HOed by LA again"  And by going through film each week it never realy is much of an issue with mine.

Watchin films is a great way to see HOW the other guy shot you down.

uggghhh films.  I have over 111 "film" files and then the ones I name.  I think I just need to delete all of them.  I have some of older ones when I thought shooting SHawk down or Greebo was my best sortie ever.  I look at the film called SHawk and I realize I picked him or Greebo.  Those aren't good films.  I think I have a tater shot on Tempest from 800 out vs pacerr but I think he didn't see me or had to answer the phone or door.  Anyways I hate films until I want to look at them then I'm pissed off cause I didn't save them after flight

I just saw in the other thread that you only fly offline missions right now. Yes I too wouldn't save a film of drones shooting me down. However, in the arenas, when a better player shoots you down it is good to watch the film from his seat to see how he did it. If you can learn HOW, then you can make sure you don't put yourself in that position again and get shot down again. Most people here "should" want to get better, and one of the best ways to do that is to watch films.

i dont care about skill i care about having fun with it..

So, IF you were to fly online and get shot down repeatedly, would you like to find out why?

Or would you cry, "HAXORZ!!1!"

Back to the OP:

To solve your problem immediately, let the game name the films.

It would be nice to get the standard Windoz message,"There is already...."

Exactly... Maybe, since this thread about saving films doesn't apply to you
and all, maybe you should reply elsewhere?

Anyway, +1 for an enhanced/advanced film-saving device/coad/thingy.

Then why are you squandering your time reading and then posting in a thread, on a bulletin board for a game that you don't really care about?

I like the time/date stamp idea compared to the current set up.

I like the time/date stamp idea compared to the current set up.

Currently (with Vista) the time/date is already provided for me when I'm
browsing my films. What I personally would like to see added is another
form of ID - something like '109K4-[xkills]-long-10/30/12-1', or something
to that affect.

Some of you seem to misunderstand the time and date suggestion. ALL files have a time and date. If you check the properties it will tell you exactly when it was created.

To prevent AH films from being overwritten, the NAME of the file has to be unique.  I dont really need to see the time and date. It is merely a way to create a UNIQUE name/number, every time you save a film.

I'm not misunderstanding, as far as I understand things.  ;)

If the time/date stamp was used as the file name (instead of "Film #"), then no films would be automatically overwritten.

Ta-dah!

:aok Good idea.  Date stamp format MMDD HH:MM (month, day, hour and minute)  Hopefully year will not be needed.  Time of the film will be more helpful than year in my opinion.
