Title: Loosing my hearing at 15!
Post by: F22RaptorDude on February 20, 2011, 08:54:20 PM
Havn't listened to my ipod in a few days, its been on the charger off. Started Thursday during an airsoft match, friend fired his green gas pistol next to my ear and now i can't hear out of one and my other one hasn't stopped ringing since....  :cry :cry :cry

weird I have fired real guns without hearing protection and the ringing goes away in a few hours maybe it can last overnight.  Gas air-soft pistol is nothing.  Which leads me to believe you just like upping your post count.

I guess someone else enjoys upping their post count, too.

It's not a sextuplet post if he posts each at a different time.

Might be okay now, but that will still damage your hearing and could mean major hearing lose as you get older.

Always wear hearing protection!

You probably have an infection of some sort.  And no what you listed wont jack your hearing up.  But if you do listen to your ipod full blast all the time, that will do it.

If your ears are ringing 3 days later, best to see a doctor.

i need a bigger post count to get that shiny new title....

hold on a second....

anyways about that loosing your hearing its kinda hard to believe that an airsoft pistol took it away...infection or blasting that ipod 100% full sound might have something to do

You need an ear transfusion

Doctor, that simple procedure will not work in this case, what we will need to prescribe is an ear and ear canal  hysterectomy with a Cranium Pediatric insertion, this should clear up his symptoms in a few weeks.  Doctor.   :D

Had someone shoot a dam 12 gauge next to my head duck hunting this last November ears rang fora couple days but after that everything was good.
And I have airsoft pistols so I also call BS. and I could be wrong hear* but isn't the correct spelling of the word in the title "losing" not "loosing" such as loosing a torpedo, but more I'm losing my mind?(not really)or something to that effect. Noticed a number of guys doing this.

After playing in a band and going to many gigs over the years, I can wholeheartedly second this post.

Plug 'em or lose 'em.

You might not be as much in the clear as you think.  That ringing in your ear was nerve cells going and dying off.  So you might not notice a lot of change now, but over the years as more noises enter your ear, those weakened hair follicles that allow you to hear will also die, leaving you with a noticeable difference.

You want a ringing ear for two weeks. Fire a concrete fastner in a 2 foot by 3 foot closet when you have forgoten to put your ear protection back in.  That sucked!  My ears are fine BTW.

I used to work in production sound recording.  One day there was a loose connection in a return line i had running from the mixer and engineer station to my headset.  The mixer was a temp replacement for the guy I usually work with who was out that day.  In an attempt to fix the problem, they cranked the volume on the return astronomicaly high.  Myself, being of the more practical "was working fine yesterday" aproach started backtracing my run and connections.  Found it, replugged it, and bam, the feedback back so instantaneous and loud that my headset litteraly boomed itself off my head.  I don't even remember the sound.  I just remember finding the problem, replugging it, then the next second being on my bellybutton with my hands over my ears, deaf and ringing, and tears pouring down my face from either the pain or shock.  I was deaf for about half an hour, mostly deaf for a couple more, and my hearing returned but needless to say i had a headache for a week and very soar and ringing ears for a few days.  I finished working that day but without a clue as to the audio quality I was picking up (I was just watching levels and even switched to some epiupment that had more levels so i didn't have to use my hearing).  I'm pretty sure the pain and shock I was in was form having my eardrums blown out and ruptured.  I'm fine now, my hearing though has never really been the same and I always since have a problem with water in my ears and more frequent ear infections since.

See a doctor if it keeps up, but definetley take care of your good hearing and ears while you still got it.

cc that, I've shot my handgun before without hearing protection.  I was outside and didn't think it would be too bad but I think the trees reflected the sound back and my ears rang for a day or so.  I'm actually glad I heard it though, 1) makes me appreciate the hearing protection and 2) I won't be surprised by the sound if I ever have to fire in self-defense.

Sound   Noise
Level
(dB)   Effect

Jet engine (near)    140
Firecracker    140
Gun firing    140
Rock concert    110-140
Boom box    120    Threshold of pain (125 db).
Thunderclap (near)    120
Stereo (over 100 watts)    110-125
Chainsaw    110
Jackhammer    110
Snowmobile    105
Airplane (near)    103
Garbage truck    100    Regular exposure of more than 1 minute risks permanent hearing loss (above 100 db).
Farm tractor    98
Motorcycle (near)    90    No more than 15 minutes of unprotected exposure recommended.
Subway    88
Lawnmower    85-90    Level at which hearing damage begins (85 db).
Television    70-90
City traffic noise    80    Level at which constant exposure may cause hearing damage.
Alarm Clock    80
Washing machine    78
Dishwasher    75    Long exposure to sounds less than 75 db is unlikely to harm ears
Vacuum cleaner    70
Hair dryer    70
Laughter    60-65
Normal conversation    50-65
Refrigerator humming    40
Quiet room    40
Whisper    30
Rustling leaves    20

OK those are some normal everyday sounds here are some airsoft pistols loudness

Springer - TM S&W PC356    84dB
Maruzen S&W M4506    88dB
Marushin Bren Ten 8mm    86dB
Tanaka S&W M29 6.5"    84dB
KSC H&K Mk23 SOCOM    94dB (86dB with silencer)
Western Arms SV Infinity Ltd 6"    96dB
Western Arms Beretta Cougar 8045    96dB
S&W Performance Center M945    94dB
KSC M93R II    94dB

So I personally dont think it was teh loudness of the pistol but when the gun was fired he was near the ports that release the air pressure. That in turn ruptured or tore his eardrum. I personally would go get checked out for that possibility. Check out this site it will explain what I mean.... http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/001038.htm

Now I may not be a doctor but going by what you said I did a little investigation and my opinion is to go get checked out.

iPod in the classroom?  I'm done!

There wasn't a stage in my senior year that I wasn't listening to music in class.

That was one of the great advantages of long hair and a uniform.... I ran my headphones through my the inside of my blazer from the side pocket, up and around my shoulder, up to the collar and up to my ear from the back. Stealth.

I suppose that says a lot about the education system.... School is too easy, I finished in the top 7% of the state for half of my subjects.  :lol

get hearing protection... you wont notice it now... but in many years... it will be ringing all time.

I used to play in bands and play my guitar very loudly without ear plugs... I was stupid, now that I'm older, my hearing is not as good as it should be. If its very quiet, I still hear a persistent ring in my ears.

Ive been working on helicopters for about 4 years now. Every year we have to go for a audio-gram to track our hearing loss. We are supposed to wear double hearing protection, ie earplugs and our cranial which has ear muffs. So far Ive steadily lost hearing and the ring in my ears continues to get more obvious. In four years Ive lost about 1/10th of my hearing. So I figure in another 16 years I will have lost about a 1/2 of my hearing by the time Im 38. Not including near and VERY close encounters with explosions and weapon fire during my tour.

Hearing is a gift. The ringing lets you know your still alive. But it gets annoying fast.

ipod are allowed at my school, and the only class they can't be listened to is in my math class. (Tho some people sneak it in their jacket sleeves) History is where you can hear ipods from across the classroom, people blast their music as loud as they can. Teacher gets annoyed but does little to stop them, in his opinion, if you don't want to pass he won't make or help you.
