Title: In the market for an Sports Utility atv
Post by: F22RaptorDude on February 21, 2011, 09:45:05 PM
Any suggestions for me? I'm looking at the recon at the moment. What i want are head lights, red or silver body, can carry two full grown men(Which the Recon can not). And something with automatic transmission. Also trying to keep the budget under4-5K

I can offer some help. If your into craigslist at all I would suggest looking in there once you have a refined search. Lots of toys going for dirt cheap now thanks to economy. Picked up 2 dirt bikes and a small quad for room mate's 6 year old for very cheap. All 3 just needed a tune up.

You'll be bored with a recon real quick, that 250 is pretty dang small.  I'd suggest getting a Honda Foreman Rubicon, my dad has one and it has fully automatic shift, but it also has manual electric shift.  It's a 500cc bike and easily carries two people.  A mid 2000 model will run around your price range.

Same bike as my dads except his is green.

Can't go wrong with a Honda Foreman Rubicon.  I've had one for about 7 years ( i think...I can't remember when we bought it 04 or 05), and I have never had a problem with it.  We liked it so much that we bought 2 more the next year

I'll look into it, Thanks for the advice, I noticed the Recons size and was really puzzled over it. I'm looking at website prices but i'm hopinh they won't be as high at the dealership when i go. Plus the website only has all the new models, so unless thats all the dealerships have to...

Buy a Jeep, more people fit and it will go way more places.

2011 Sportsman 400 is around $5700 and it's actually 455 cc not 400 so you get a little more power. I would go with Craigsist and dig around. I got my '09 Sportsman 850XP for $7k on there. I don't know if your are new to ATVs but pretty much everything is going to have headlights and most in that class have auto CVT. Not sure what you'll be doing with it but don't try and save money by not going with a 4x4 when you get in to ATVs that size. You'll regret it. And all manufacturers have very good ATVs now.

I have a 2007 Rhino Sport. This pic is one for sale for $2800 in Dallas.
Mine has much larger tires, 3000 lb winch and lots of performance parts.

I'm getting into hunting now, and my grandfathers atv isn't always available. He got it back around 2000 and its pretty cool, only thing i hate is the braking system which engages when you throttle down. Gives me a feel of constraint. I'm hoping to go to the honda dealership in the next few days or so to look around and get some general idea's on what i'm considering. If there's nothing there i'll look elsewhere but all of your input is greatly appreciated on my end.

Never seen a stock or semi stock jeep go even remotely close to where my 400ex has been.  I'd like to watch someone prove me otherwise though.

That Polaris is a nice bike, I believe most if not all of them are fully automatic. I'd still take the Rubicon over it though.  I used to beat the absolute piss out of my dad's back in the day and never had a problem with it.  Stay away from Artic Cat whatever you do, if they ever tear up your looking at a costly fix.

This is the way to go IMO.  If I ever decide I'm tired of the sport bike and wanna calm it down some I would definitely look into some side by sides.

I'm trying to figure out what's the advantage of having an ATV over a dirt bike? (never had either one)
The way I see it a dirt bike is typically faster, more maneuverable, and generally has better off-road capability. The only advantage that comes to mind of an ATV is that the 4 wheels wont let it fall.

From my experience four wheels are more dangerous than two, but I've been riding for twentysix years.

Quad can carry more crap on it then a bike, other then that Bike>Quad every time

Four wheelers are more stable, speedy (some are) and have more off road capabilities than dirt bikes.

You could not take a dirt bike in places I go..... they won't make it.

I go through most everything any quad can go through. It'll run 60 mph, has 4 lock hi and low. You can set them up to run well over 100 if you need that.

For hunting , work, or play you can't beat a side x side.

IMHO of course.

Very agreeable, Atv's are for more woodsy area's. Dirt bikes are for racing and not any other possibilities

lol. Try the cape york ride one day (err week) it would suck on a quad. A well set up enduro bike has a lot more uses than just racing.

You can take a dirt bike into the woods, just got to watch out for trees.

I can name quite a few:  try to pull a deer out of the woods on 2 wheels,  move a trailer around with two wheels,  or carry hunting equipment (stands, ladders, feeders) in and out of the woods on 2 wheels.

My main point on why i want a atv apposed to a dirt bike

We built this add-on for a John Deere diesel side x side. We added a platform in the back with seating for two. Added a hydraulic lift unit in front with swivel seating for two handicapped individuals. The front lift unit will set on the ground to load the two in the front. After they are buckled in the unit will lift hydraulicly for ground clearance. There are 2 long gun holders in the front along with cup holders. The back features holders for 4 long guns and 2 medium coolers. The front operates with a controller much like one on a winch.

Actually that alumabrite deck plate is cheap compared to most materials we deal with. All of it, including the tube, was cut on our laser.

This was built for a customer that was going to use it on his ranch up around San Antonio. He was only planning on taking the kids on day hunts.

The back seats are for 2 ranch hands. They are on board to insure that if one of the kids on front makes a shot, the animal will go down and not get away wounded.

Buy a Jeep... ... ... it will go way more places.

Except for the thousands of miles of ATV trails in the west that Jeeps are far to wide to fit on. (or illegal)

The kid asked about ATV's why do you even bring up Jeeps, very different vehicles for different purposes.

I never saw "new" in his post anywhere.  420 Ranchers are real nice bikes and are actually in his price range for a fairly new bike.  The only advantage they have over a Rubicon though is that they are fuel injected not carbureted.  Makes it easier if you want to put a pipe or high flow filter on it.  You don't have to jet them, they automatically adjust all that for you.

Whats probably going to end up happening is we will go to the dealership's around my area. Going to try to not get a newer model but something cheaper in that price range. If that fails then we will look in adds as a last resort.
