Hello, I have come to ask a question-
If you were given the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to live forever, (but this would not apply to anyone else) would you do it?
Axioms:
Nobody would do anything about it
Nobody would care
You would not be immune to dying from external causes (murder, car accidents, lightning strikes)
You would return to the condition in which you were during the prime of your life, sans any damage from external sources (i.e. you drank like a sailor and destroyed your liver), and never age
Your memory would be infinite, along with any resulting wisdom

uuuhhhh...yesno!!

As long as I can still kill myself in a reasonable way, why not? I always have an exit option.

yes
-
I would say yes a hundred times over. The only thing I legitimately fear is death. It's the only thing that has every stopped me in my tracks or made me feel sick in my gut.
-
yes although it would be hard at times to out live every single friend and family member you have/ever will have
-
Eternal life at the age of 25 or so.
Sounds good to me
-
Life is long enough as it is. Screw that.

My thoughts precisely.

I guess this makes it X2
-
Given that I am who I am, and that I would still think what I think - no.
-
who on earth would want to live forever, think of all those years you will work and never reach retirement lol living forever at age 25 sounds good now, might not after a few 100 years
-
Yes. If for no other reason so I live to see the day people aren't so myopic to think indefinite lifespan is some kind of curse.
-
Do I get to run around with a sword chopping off peoples heads, yelling "There can be only one!"
If so, count me in!
-

:rofl
-
Even though when, you think about it, eternal life seems... well rather boring, eventually...
I have a hard time thinking that I'll eventually say to myself, 'Well, I've had enough of this'. The world constantly changes around you...
-
either way i'll die in a fiery car crash by 50.
-
No I've been on the brink of death several times...was I ready to go? No
Life is hard...70-80 years is plenty for me.
-
I would get bored, I get my kicks doing risky stuff.
-
hell yeah.
Retire at 100 or 150 and baby its retirement forever.
-
No interest at all in living forever.
I think much of it has to do with believing that there is something beyond this life however. I'd imagine if I thought that death was it, I'd probably think differently. As it is, i've got too many folks I hope to see again and too many questions I want answers to.
-
Afterlife - If it's there, and forever, it can wait. I see no reason not to make the most of this life while I'm at it. Indeed that's what's usually promised about afterlife: eternal bliss etc... Stretching this life by a few centuries or millenia is chump change in comparison. No hurry.
-
I presume you mean live forever in our physical bodies.
My world view already presumes I do live forever just not in our corporeal body.
Lets go to round two.
So NO.
-
Nope, who would want to stay in this world forever? :headscratch:
-

Most of the people in this thread, apparently.
-
Yes - losing loved ones would be hard....very very hard....but I would manage. As already stated - there is the exit option.
I would say yes a hundred times over. The only thing I legitimately fear is death. It's the only thing that has every stopped me in my tracks or made me feel sick in my gut.
Real terror is not the sight of death, it is the fear of death. What is the fear of death? Terror of the unknown.

Why would "this world" remain what you know it as, forever?
How do you guys justify this apparent expectation that this measly piece of time and space and knowledge that we've experienced so far is even close to being as much as the tip of the iceberg? One little piece of rock among billions or trillions, a few thousand years out of tens of billions past and for all we know trillions of trillions future, and for all we know one universe among indefinitely many more if not also a variety of whole other planes of existence.... And you take "this world" as what to expect from living long enough to explore all these things in what really does amount (for those of you who're religious) the full splendor of your deity's creation? You just opt out of all that to retire for dessert asap?
I really don't get it. Pessimism, defeatism... take your pick, there's just no positive way this kind of perspective appears to me.

Pretty much, but look at it this way. We have: war, disease, famine, and death. These are just some things and the list just goes on and on. Yes, there are some good things, but sometimes they can be outweighed by the atrocities that happen on this world. You can call it what you want, but other people just expect something better after this life. (sorry for the very short answer, my dad just went to the hospital and ill try to fix it when I get back)
-
No desire to live to see the end of time or the destruction of our solar system...because honestly the way most people live their life you in fact could/would see those things happen in a few billion years. If I live to see grandchildren or 75-85 years old I think that would be enough; no need to continue cluttering up the landscape after that point. Besides I think I will have to work till I am 70 just to be able to retire and be comfortable for a few years.
-
M0nkey - I don't see why those are reason enough to give up what good we know and will find in the future.
Reschke - Billions of years till Sun starts to inflate. Plenty of time to figure something out, if this solar system is still deemed so precious.
no need to continue cluttering up the landscape after that point.
A few centuries and space access ought to be routine. No more crowding then.

Yes, but eventually you have to face the "Gnab Gib".

You'd have to have had a really easy life to this point to not see the down sides of living forever.

exactly
-
It's about as inexact as it could be. It's meaningless. It vaguely says something only about what you see. Not what's better or worse and why, unless implied, or what you'd do and why you'd do it because of what you saw. A non-argument.
The implied point- that you have to have had an easy life to naively expect living forever to be puppies and sunshine, or even merely bearable - isn't even justified, in that quoted post nor in reality. I'd want to live forever mainly because of the hardships I've known. Because I've never known any where tackling them, successfully or not, left me with a bad conscience.
It's a bogus argument like so many others made by mechanic before. My money's on the real argument being that because life is hard it's not worth living. Well ok, give it up. It's only hard because you don't have the self-respect to take adversity head on and not beat yourself over failing even though you did your best.
Like I said. Defeatism.

Ha. Took me a while to figure it out.

not necessarily. I'm still working to an easy life....I've been living off of Ramen noodles for months now. I'd like to get to that "easy" point and enjoy it.

Please notice the bold text in my quote, Moot. Despite your predictable, yet eloquent, attempts to discredit my nature I shall afford you a further post here.
I never answered the question, would I say 'yes' or 'no'. Your spite is getting ahead of your comprehension.
-
It appeals to me as I love history.
I could not pass the opportunity to live it. And after 100 years or so. Remember it.
-
No way. Does anyone else rememeber the ending to "The Green Mile"?
-
I would, there's so many things to see in this world. It's impossible to "do it all" so to speak, in one lifetime.

no credibility
And as pointed out above, no argument, no stance, no reasoning, nothing. And someone quotes it and says "exactly". Exactly nothing.
-
jeeze the world ends next year......so forever isn't that far away. :bolt:

Life is a game, Moot. I hope you see that one day and start simply enjoying it a bit more.

Son uve smoked yourself shhhhtupidd! :bhead :bhead

I'd rather live a short life as a joyfull dreamer than eternity as a grouchy scientist.

I'll just say, i don't want to die a virgin, and i want to see world war 3 and live thru it.
-
I was a professional fighter for 16 years and stayed in the ring until I was 40. So to be 25 years old again in the prime of my life and to go back to the ring with the low quality fighters in my weight class that are around to day sounds great to me. Not to mention all young women that hang around pro athletes.
However I have already out lived my only son and I have three other kids and I love my wife. As great as living forever sounds to me I think I will have to pass. I would not want to live through the pain of losing all my loved ones. You could never form a close bond with anyone ever again. I think at some point you would toss yourself off a bridge.
