Title: driver sweeper and open candy
Post by: guncrasher on February 26, 2011, 10:32:31 PM
I tried to update driver sweeper today and eset terminated the d/l due to it may potentially install open candy app.  any thoughts on this?  it's not a virus, but an app that will ask you to d/l other apps that you may not have requested.

Sometimes antiviruses make false positives, if driver sweeper has a function that will download and install something automatically Nod may mistake it for a trojan downloader. On the other hand many of the free 'tweak' tools online are nothing but malware in reality, lurking and biding their time in hopes of a computer noob installing them.

In case of a driver sweeper, Nod's reaction may as well be due to the way the sweeper is programmed. An antivirus software's duty is to protect the computer's settings, including drivers. There are viruses (virii?) that install into drivers, in which case, if succesful, they bypass antivirus software by pretending they are part of the operating system. Aside that a sweeper may be programmed in a similar - and proven as effective - way as a virus, in which case your antivirus gives a false positive. Same thing may happen with password and registry key sniffers.

I you are SURE that some file is OK but antivirus software prevents access to it, due to a false positive, you can include that file name in "exclusions". (pun intended  :x )

But make sure you set the file name with complete path to that file. EX "C:\downloads\example.exe"

If one sets just the file name, "example.exe", ANY other file with that name will be allowed to execute, with unknown consequences.

The exclusions section for NOD32 v.4 is found in "Advanced setup" tree.

If antivirus software prevents download, deactivate antivirus protection, download the file. Set that file name in exclusions(complete path). Activate antivirus and access the file.

Good luck!  :salute

thanks for the replies guys, but this is not a false positive.   it seems driver sweeper joined several other free programs and downloads a separate program, which you did not request/want to "give" you info on other apps that you may be interested based on who knows what info they collect from you.  I declined to upgrade my driver sweeper app until they remove this app.  They have the right to make money by selling other apps, of course, but i wish they would be upfront about it and ask.

one funny thing that i found out.  if you decline yahoo toolbars while installing iobits (advanced system care)  it still downloads it.

One funny thing you should learn also is that nothing EVER comes free in this world. If you get a tool for download there's always some motive for making it available for you. Many of the so called tweak tools do little more than cause even more mess in your computer and potentially install spyware in the process.
