I was thinking "well he used a very long telephoto to make it look closer" ... but he didnt.

the shots were taken on an IXUS V, exif shows one taken wide at 5mm (35mm equiv), the rest tele at 11mm (70mm equiv). blimey!

Yup, likely taken in the desert around their off-season/winter training site/base in El Centro, CA.
