im buying a laptop reasonably soon... my price range is below 500... i want something that plays aces high. thats all. any suggestions/criticisms?

A laptop in that price range isn't going to run AH well, and you won't be able to upgrade very much at all. Take your $500 and spend it on a desktop, then save for a new PSU, GPU and some RAM. You'll be much happier in the end.

Yep unfortunately you need to double or triple that amount to get a decent gaming laptop. And still it will be only a laptop.
Do you _absolutely_ need a laptop for gaming? Because if you can, get a very cheap small laptop for portable use and then a desktop for gaming. Best of both worlds.

You can probably buy a desktop for that price that will do AH fairly well.
But to get a laptop that will even run AH reasonably well your looking at triple that figure.
Doesn't understand people who buy laptops to run AH, its like sending a boy to do a mans job then being angry when he doesn't do it well.

yeah, but i dont have access to a credit crd, i wont be playing online, and the graphics detail doesn't matter to me at all. still a no go?

This is what I do, and I agree it's the best way to go. At least for me.

Just a thought, but you may consider posting this in the classifieds forum. Ya may be able to pick up a used one for a decent price.

And if you choose to do so remember that laptops have usually a very short lifespan when they're used for gaming. Their small enclosure and typical use enviroments (on beds, chairs, soft lap of your girlfriend :), pillows blocking vents) they are very easily run at critically high temperatures which shorten the lifespan of the components.
It's very typical problem for laptops to lose contact on SMD's due to overheating and botched soldering. That can be possibly fixed by cooking the motherboard in an oven though but at the cost of dismantling the whole thing.
To put it short: Expect the second hand laptop to die an early death - take this into account when spending money.

Seen that done, oven cooking is at best only a temporary solution. The right way to do it is to remove the glue around the circuitry, add some flux, then preheat the mobo in the oven, then after shielding nearby components with aluminum foil heat the circuitry with a heat blower until the solder beneath it melts. An infrared thermometer is almost essential to avoid overheating.
