Title: Bomber drones lost on takeoff
Post by: -sudz- on March 02, 2011, 09:14:35 AM
I've been looking into this for awhile now with little success.  But I haven't given up.  If this is happening to anyone out there and you get it on film it would help a lot if you could send it into support@hitechcreations.com.  A provision being, however, that it has to be from the current release.  I've reviewed the films sent in before this release but they were taken before recent changes and may be the result of something different. (Such as drones spawning on hillsides).

As for word of mouth accounts, they're appreciated but given that I've already spent hours trying to reproduce the bug from said airfield in said direction with said plane I don't know how much help they can be.  A film would be my golden ticket.

Thanks is advance,
- Sudz

While working with the terrain editor, I have been able to reproduce this with regularity.  I'll try to get it on film.  What I've seen happen is on a diagonal runway, like NE, if the edge (vertex?) of the terrain square slopes down even a little on each side, the drones (at least the very end one) tends to flip-flop nose-to-tail like a crack addict.  When you start your takeoff roll, the drone(s) may be pointing the opposite direction and start going the wrong way and eventually warp and disappear.

My solution was to make sure the airfield terrain is truely flat for one square all the way around the perimeter.  Like I said, I'll try to make a film tonight when I get home.

Well Sudz,

With the latest patch that starts the bomber drones on the runway as opposed to how they used to start off the end of the runway, I cannot reproduce the flipping anymore. I did up a quick terrain so I could intentionally slope the terrain to match what I had a few weeks ago when working on one of my terrain projects and noticed the flipping drones.

Here's a rough diagram of what I noticed before.  The shaded area indicates where the terrain is sloped away from the base because it's a little lower (doesn't need to be a lot lower), and the red dots indicate where the player and his drones used to be when first spawned - right on the seam between the two sloped terrain squares.  The drone farthest from the player would be the one to flip around.

Sorry, man.

Sudz,
Read this and see if it gives you some ideas on what to try:

I don't have a film, but I'll remember to save it next time I see it happen.

The drone issues I've seen usually occur when there are a lot of bombers taking off together.  It's almost like so many drones get placed inside each other that they for some reason seem to try to get away, which includes them taking off 'backwards' at times.

The funny thing is that they can go backwards and disappear from view, and usually after takeoff they magically reappear... but sometimes they simply never do.

I also noticed that sometimes if two planes are occupying the same space, some smoke will emit from their locations until they separate from each other.  I don't know if that's related to the missing drones bug or not.

I'll get you some film next time I see it happen.
