Title: Global Shield - MITO - Minimum Interval Take Off
Post by: Yeager on March 04, 2011, 01:26:03 AM
Back when there was a solid enemy to aim for the USAF would practice emergency deployment of B52s to launch a nuclear counter attack against the USSR.  This is a film of just such an excercise.  KC135s are heavily in the mix.

Enjoy the power and wonder in awe at what could have been but fortunately never was.

Yes very fortunate that it never was, It would have been a shame for so many B-52's to get shot down

Based on the extended description I believe it is B-52G's and KC-135A's from the 416 BMW out of Griffiss AFB, NY

hmm have not been there, guess I'm mixing it up with something else.
Come to think of it I don't think I ever heard of Griffiss before. Wiki says it was shut down in 1994, I guess that's why.

Im not privy to the survival rate prediction data.  Suffice it to say the USAF would have accomplished its mission.

Were you at Carswell? I was stationed there from 1985-1989.

On the OP, I drove KC-135As in MITOs on several occasions. If you weren't scared, you weren't doing it right.

I was and still am seriously impressed the the B-52 on takeoff. That is one massive gas guzzler right there.

Oh man, before they closed K.I. Sawyer these babies would fly around here at tree-top level.

You would here a rumbling from off in the distance. We'd all start to look around saying "Where is it?", when all of a sudden SCRREEEEEEEEEEWOOOOOOOOOSH it would pass right over or nearby our heads. The sound, size and fury was an awesome sight to behold. In the summer time this would sometimes happen several times a day.

I live within the confines of the Big Bear training area. Unfortunately, now all we seem to get around are high fighters. And they are only visible on very rare occasions.  :frown:

Those B-52's looked fragile, but they were tough SOBs.

WOW, that brings back memories. Breach dome cleaning after cart starts. Water injection. The smell of JP4! Living underground. Never ending alert tours.

Loring 1985-91 with extended stay in the sandbox  :salute
