:salute all
was wondering if i could find a trainer, or just anyone who knows the P-40, to help me out in the bird.
i'm trying to learn it for the Rangoon scenario in April, and all i know about it is if you're in trouble, stick the nose down. any hidden tricks up it's sleve?

Flaps come out at high speed....not sure what that speed is, cant remember :(

Although i've never flown the Kittyhawk or Warhawk i'd love to check it out also. The 20th might be flying majority allied for the next scenario

watch for AvA matchups that feature the P-40E.. allows you teh chance to face opponents on a little more equitable grounds in terms of planes.
ditto for SEA events that feature it.
or find someone - another p-40, or similar opponent and use the DA for 1 v 1 action to wrack teh plane around and find your comfort zone.
or find a wingy and tear up furball lake (or the MA)
The thing is, unless you fly and push it to your limits, you'll not learn the full potential and limitations, for any ride for that matter.

Thanks EB, but I haven't really flown it in months and was only so-so due to spending so much time getting clobbered in it. FBLazy is pretty good in it, I think.
I wouldn't recommend it for furballing, unless you are a masochist. It can surprise a lot of people with good instantaneous turn and roll rate. Flaps are great but slow you down, as well as being made of very thin glass (that went through the dishwasher a few too many times). You will lose a flap from any hit on your wings and handling will suffer badly thereafter. Just remember not to get hit. You can cause many an overshoot with the slow speed handling but have trouble catching anyone that runs. You can have a ton of fun flying the P-40, as long as you don't mind being a magnet for every red icon in range. :)

I believe the Flying Tiger's doctrine was to start with an altitude advantage, dive through the Japanese formations and extend away.

Thanks Caldera but I believe there is better sticks in the P40 than me. I have had my :ahand to me and been lucky in it a couple times :joystick:, by no means do I think I could help anybody but do a little of :bhead. I've only been able to do good in it when partnered with a wingman or was able to get my opponent into a slow fight :devil.
But Sweet Ride the P40 is and the Perks are awesome when you get some kills in it :rock :banana:.

The p40 and other planes in its class suffer from being under powered as compared to plane models a year later.
A zeek will out maneuver the p40 at co alt.
A 109f4 will run cirlcles around a p40
The point s if you want to "learn" the plane you need to really learn how to CONSERVE energy. All early war planes require attention to energy managment. This means you must learn to fly in such a way as to conserve your energy until you need it to make/close for a shot but not totally blow it all on that shot.
It is a more conservative type of flying. Keep your alt as much as possible. Fly as fast as possible. You really need two p40's (you and wingman) to take on any plane of better or equal value.
First take in the MA and fly at around 5k. You will immedialty see how energy is absolutly necessary. When in a 109k4, P51 or Kia4 for example these planes have enough power and speed to get out what they get into.
The p40 cant get out....so you must learn to get in and out with enough energy to defend yourself.
Quite simply...if you get slow and low you are dead.

back in my more active days I would play with the P40-E every now and then. if you use your flaps, and your advantages (not that she has many in LW :rolleyes:)you can do a lot with her. toot around the DA with it, do some 1-1's get a feel for it, then move to the MA and try what you learned. Trim helps a lot with it too. if your turnin tight I found trimming my elevators up helps a lot.

Trimming up may help you personally turn tightly but it's useful to know that it doesn't allow you to turn any tighter or faster than not trimming up.

really? always seems to make my plane turn tighter... must be placebo.

The trim function does not increase the control surface deflection any more than normal joystick input. The only thing I can think of that may change that is if you fly with stall limiter on, I can't say for certain one way or the other in that case since I don't have any experience with it.

have the stall limiter off. Idk, bust be in my mind that trimming up helps me turn tighter.

If you scale your pitch axis, trimming up will move the more scaled portion closer to the critical AOA. You won't turn tighter because you trimmed but you may find it easier to ride the edge.

havent touched the scaling on my x52. idk. its all mental i spose.
