http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_albums_in_the_United_States
I was looking at the top 50 most selling albums in the US and noticed that there has not been one album released in the last 10 years that has sold over 14 million copies. Britany Spears came close in 1999 but didn't quite do it.
Has music been that bad over the last 10 years or is it because people have been stealing music via the internet so sales don't get counted?

Nobody buys albums, or buys music.

couldn't have anything to do with the fact that there isn't much to choose from lately, could it?
funny how music from nearly 40 years ago still gets airplay, huh? :devil

How many people can really sign without having a computer to make them sound like a god? Besides, internet, MP3 and what other little devise make it easy to buy one song and pass it around to others.

Both related I think, Technology has been putting musicians out of a job for a long time now, so the desire to become a professional musician is lower and those that are, usually find themselves having to do something else to support themselves. Stealing music is too easy and devalues the whole industry. If you hate the music thats around now days and your stealing music, its your fault.

AAHH......
my apologies sir. i misunderstood.
today's "artists"? pretty close to non-existent.
especially in a day and age when stealing someone elses music for your song is called "sampling" in an attempt to make it sound better......

PLENTY in the right circles.
Delmag, Agalloch, etc.
You're simply generalizing pop crap.

If it is in the top ten, it's probably not worth listening to...
Opeth, Porcupine Tree, Radiohead, etc...

why pay when you can get it for free?

Buying todays crap music isn't going to do anything but create more crap music. Commercial music is just that, mass produced for mass consumption. Example, McDonald's is to burgers, as Nickelback is to rock music. The music industry devalued itself by selling a lame product that "appeals to everyone", but is devoid of any flavor. As far as I'm concerned, the mainstream music industry losing money is karma. I'm not going to lose any sleep is some record exec in Hollywood loses a few thousand dollars. After all that's where all the money from CD's sold goes anyway.

That decade started just after the creation of Aces High...
I know what I've been doing the whole time. I don't have the extra time in my schedule to gouge my ears out with spoons if I happen to listen to squeaky media tools, so I don't.

I guess actually performing live as opposed to sitting in a studio for a few days while technogeeks artificially enhance what little talent they have. Then sitting back and collecting the money for those few days in a studio is out of the question. Might be something more akin to...working. LOL

The only trend like that that I see really being a factor is that living standards have been on the rise all this time. "No artists like starving artists".

Pirating music harms no one but the record companies. In all honesty, musicians today make through their endorsements and concerts. The labels get most of the money through the album sales. I pirate music proudly and then spend my money on tickets for concerts and merch when I'm there, where the band gets that money.
