Title: Laptop startup screeching noise
Post by: Max on March 08, 2011, 10:24:33 AM
The victim is an Asus G73 running Win7 Ultimate. The machine has less than 20 hrs of use...basically new. Upon starting the laptop a horrible screeching noise emits from the speakers during the Windows Starting splash screen. This is followed by a repair attempt screen (no solution) and shut down.

This is a new one to me. Any ideas?
btw I can't start the laptop in safe mode either...during the screeching.

It sounds like you have a faulty hard drive, by the screeching. Definately want to go get it looked at and possibly repaired.

Two physical things move in a computer, your HDD(Hard Drive Disk(the exception being SSD(Solid State Drive))) and fans. If you can rule out that it's not actually the computer speakers it could very well be a broken head in the HDD or the bearings in a cooling fan are shot. Neither will make a pretty noise under the right conditions. The good news is(in a desktop anyways) both of these things can be replaced cheaply, the bad news is I don't think fans are standardized in laptops so you would have to go through the OEM for a repair. HDDs on the otherhand are readily swapped out even in a laptop so long as you have an OS to install on it.

It's the HDD.  If it's that new, get a warranty repair done.

If it's from the speakers... You potentially could have a faulty board.

I've never heard of a bad HDD emitting a screeching sound from the speakers...

Furthermore, the hard drive spins up almost right at power start-up, so you should get the sound right away, not only until the "Windows is Starting Up" splash screen, correct?

Faulty hardware can keep Windows from booting.  The repair screen will come up after an unsuccessful boot or incorrect shutdown either way.

But I suppose the end result is the same... RMA!

The Asus laptop is covered by Geek Squad. This is the 2nd Asus LT...1st one was junked out under extended warranty due to bad memory, failed HDD, failed fans which fried mobo and graphx card. So much for Asus.
