BowHTR list the number of Servicemen killed in Iraq and Afghanistan at 5885. That number stood out to me because its very close to the number of people killed in the US last year due to distracted driving.
"Transportation officials said in a report that 5,870 people were killed and 515,000 were injured last year in crashes where at least one form of driver distraction was reported. Driver distraction was involved in 16 percent of all fatal crashes in 2008."

Put the cell phone down and DRIVE!
Edit: The statistics I cited are from 2008, but I heard the number on the radio yesterday and it was nearly the same.

Only 16% attributed to distraction? Is that correct? What was the other 84% attributed too? Also, given that the cells are not the only distraction lets give it a high 50% of that 16%, maybe worth fixing the 92% first?

There was another fatal accident not too far from where I live. You guessed it; Someone was texting, ran a red light and T-boned someone. The idiot with the phone survived but the person he hit did not. I don't know how realisitic this idea is but just a thought. I think in order for someone to get a cell phone, both their driving records and criminal records should be taken into consideration prior to sells.
-
bad idea. that is trying to legislate common sense....something that has already been proven to be impossible/.

YES!!!! And also burgers, hot dogs, news papers, radio, lipstick, make up, passengers (they could be very distracting) bla bla bla.
Funny how quick everyone is to give up rights in order to accomplish nothing.
Look past the hype the head lines and what makes a good show for Oprah and will see that only a small percentage of accidents are attributed to txting While you are at it though, how about we make beer elegal since it is probably a bigger contributor to fatal accidents? Or maybe the store should run a background check on you before you can by it.

although i agree...the thing is 1 is too many...before i moved closer to work i used to see all manner of idiot behavior while driving...women putting on makeup...people using cell phones without hands free devices...reading the newspaper...saw one guy in a big suv reading through a stack of papers, doing 75mph on wet roads...the list goes on.
i think ron white summed it up pretty well..."you can't fix stupid"

Last year I was walking out to my car parked on the street, a neighbor of mine left her driveway, her phone rang, while reaching for her cell that had fallen on the passenger side floor, her foot pushed the gas pedal and she slammed into the telephone pole 2 door down at about 40 mph.
Wasted the car + 8,000 for a new pole.
The best part was her getting out of the car and yelling at the pole. :rofl

I really don't find any humor in your response, unless of course I misread it and how you had meant it. The person who was killed in the accident was in early 20s, and her child was also in the car was injured but thankfully, not seriously. Also, I've had several friends killed by a drunk driver (3 in one night alone) So tell me, is there anything else about that you can find funny?
-
here's something to consider.
there is no such thing as an accident. 99.9999999% of all auto accidents are due to negligence. this makes them not an accident.

PLEASE folks.....getting personal against each other doesn't help.
This area (Central Arkansas) has the WORST drivers I have seen in my lifetime. It's like driving in a bad Driver's Ed Film everyday.
Yes, it's now even worse with the cell phone yappers and texters---not including all the methheads.
They've tried to legislate it away (at least with drivers younger than 18) and it doesn't help.
The things they've tried to do to fight drunk driving isn't working either.
I have no answer for these problems. Yes, it is the epitome of stupid. Yes, it happens here everyday. They (the stupid people) have the cops outnumbered.

you've obviously never driven in nj. and philly makes nj drivers look good.
-
I apologize. It was not your request that was stupid. It was your suggestion. :old:
Who is the bigger jerk? Me for calling you out or you for using someones death to push for what you believe should be done? It seems that the things that have caused more deaths don;t bother you. Why is that? Is it because it would inconvenience you personally or because you do them?
The subject is about distracted driving and the dangers of it right? Well I was telling a story of an accident that was related to what the many things that can distract us while driving, and that was texting. I made a suggestion and even said " I don't know how realistic it is". So I was giving a opinion/suggestion on that matter. And to answer your question, anything that distracts, makes a driver incohrent (drinking, drugs), or thing else that can cause fatal accidents is very concerning to me. Once I get back on my feet, I am hoping to get into EMT work and help people (stablize, trasport, etc). I already made my point several times so I don't feel the need to continue on with this conversation.

Haha, Tassos has you both beat. I have seen some amazing things there :lol

I have driven in Philly. I have driven the (almost) length of NJ on 95 multiple times. I would give those people relatively high marks, except the truckers and who knows where they are from.
AR has absolutely zero requirement for driver's ed. None.
The written test is a joke and the driving part is if you can sucessfully get in a car, put on a seatbelt, start the car and drive it around the building without crashing--you pass. When driving down the road here you MUST expect the vehicles around you to do the stupidest thing possible (because they do) or you die. Checking mirrors, signaling a turn or lane change, or stopping at a yellow light is nonexistant. Running red lights seems to be the sport of choice and stop signs must be "suggestions".
Sure, drivers in little Rock are a bit better as is in Fayettville but they are exceptions.
Benton/Bryant are by far the worst and Hot Springs, Pine Bluff, and Russellville are not far behind.
"Little Jimmy" gets his licence suspended after his 6th "wreck" and gets dropped by his insurance. "Jimmy" finds out nobody will write him and the state's "last chance" car insurance is so expensive he passes on it. "Jimmy" keeps driving anyway on a car he got his folks to put in their name. "Jimmy" keeps on driving until he's either in jail or in a box.
Don't get me started on people still driving on their 3rd and 4th DWI.

notice how some of us can admit when we're wrong? :devil

Just make the phones somehow not work or be in a standby mode while in a vehicle when using phone. Kinda like a dvd player in front seat is disconected when vehicle is in drive if installed correctly.

another bad idea. someone will simply find a way to bypass this.
the only solution is to enforce laws that are already on the books.
parents need to make sure their kids know how dangerous a car is. most kids don't realize that they're driving a 3500 pound guided missile.....
also..i think at 60 mph you're traveling nearly 100 feet a second.

My dad drives a civic, and some guy was TEXTING AND CHANGING LANES at the same time. He hit my dads car and almost totaled it, the guy was driving a big F350. Messed up my dads back really bad, he still has trouble picking stuff up and getting back up.
If I ever get hit by someone who wasnt paying attention, im gonna take their phone and shove it where the sun dont shine.

All my toys in my car could lead to distracted driving. Fortunately the only thing I "play" with while driving is the radio, which has a remote so I never need to take my eyes off the road. :)

Being the victim of a distracted 17 year old driver that hit me doing 55 mph while I was at a STOPLIGHT... I didn't have time to be angry. I woke up being pulled out the passenger side of my burning car, because of some punk kid texting his friends, and never even seeing the traffic stopped in front of him.
Don't get me started on "tort" reform in Florida. I ended up extremely lucky, with only spinal compression, a severe concussion, and nerve damage in my neck. Such soft tissue injuries are notoriously slow healing and difficult to prove in litigation. . Because, in Florida, in order to sue for pain and suffering resulting from a CAR accident (yes, they differentiate between 4 wheels and any other here), you must show a measurable disability resulting from the accident. My injuries were not measurable in that context, even though they were debilitating otherwise.
Basically, my life went on hold for 2.5 years which could not be recompensed, by the tort laws. They paid for my totaled vehicle, my medical treatment and that's it. I got about 15K out of it, ~$11,500 of went to medical bills. The insurance low-balled my civic to $3,000....for a car that was 7 years old with 68,000 miles on it. You couldn't get a 15 year old civic with 125K on it for that. I ended up behind, but with my life.
My lawyer said it best....if it had happened in pretty much any other state, it was a case-closed 75K to 100K settlement.

The driving here in 29 Palms sucks the big ones - I'm now of the mindset of thinking of the stupidest thing someone can do, bingo, 2 mins later, some numpty does it. We've had so many hit and runs at night my wife and I no longer walk at night (we like the exercise, but not worth the risk). Only been here since July '10 and lost 2 friends to stupid drivers. Stopped to help a lady change a wheel, almost got wiped out by some spanner in a dually - give him his due, he stopped, apologised and made sure we were alright, but that wasn't the point. He was on his cell phone. 9 times out of 10, if ya see someone here doing strange things on the road, they are on the sodding phone.
Car got driven into at the post office, as the woman driving the truck decided to go backwards whilst on the phone. Not much damage, but she looked a little flustered - she was even more flustered when I told her where I was going to shove said cell phone if she didn't get a clue, sharpish.
Wurzel (used to driving in the UK (and no, the standards aren't any better over there either)

cell phones are just an excuse.
most responsible drivers that are going to use a cell phone when they're driving will use a bluetooth.
look at the people in rush hour. women doing their makeup. men reading the newspaper with one hand, drinking coffee with the other. most of these people are 35 and younger. they lack planning, because if they did plan properly, they'd have read the paper as they ate breakfast(like all of our parents used to do), and had their makeup done before they left the house.
there are no new laws that can be put into place. you can't legislate stupidity. you can try to enforce the laws on the books though. even talking on the cell phone can be written up under careless driving.
if we want to get rid of the stupidity on the roads, we need to start teaching the kids(as they're getting their licenses) how dangerous a car really can be. teach them how to drive in the bad weather. how much distance they're covering in such a short period of time at any given speed.
i don't mean teach em in the schools......i'm meaning that the parents should be doing this stuff.
-

ya, i don't know of any parents who do that these days...they leave it up to the drivers ed classes to do it for them...i was lucky to have a father who started teaching me in empty parking lots and farm fields before i even got into high school...
-
As far as I'm concerned, the solution to this is quite simple. Make everyone watch the "Everybody Hurts" video from Australia before they take their driving test (probably best if it's done before the written test) - no exceptions. I'd be amazed if that didn't get most people to think twice before being stupid (and even if it only caused a few people to rethink their actions - it'd be worth it).
-
Just make the phones somehow not work or be in a standby mode while in a vehicle when using phone. Kinda like a dvd player in front seat is disconected when vehicle is in drive if installed correctly.
Yes, so in case of emergency I could not call 911 :aok You cannot fix stupid guys. All these rules only punish or make it difficult for the ones that are responsible. And again, there are so many other distractions we seem to not care about.

for anyone that thinks it's ok to look away from the road for just a few seconds......
at 60mph, you're going about 88 feet a second, or a mile a minute. so looking away for 4 seconds, you've traveled over 350 feet.
no one has taken into consideration the actual stopping distance of the vehicle they're driving, or their reaction time to stop it. i just found this......
Braking/Stopping Distances
MPH Ft./Sec. Braking
Deceleration
Distance Perception
Reaction
Distance Total
Stopping
Distance
10 14.7 5 22 27
15 22 11 33 44
20 29.3 19 44 63
25 36 30 55 85
30 44 43 66 109
35 51.3 59 77 136
40 58.7 76 88 164
45 66 97 99 196
50 73.3 119 110 229
55 80.7 144 121 265
60 88 172 132 304
65 95.3 202 143 345
70 102.7 234 154 388
75 110 268 165 433

85 124.7 345 187 532
90 132 386 198 584
that's kinda scary when it comes right down to it.

Same here. VERY sad.
It's all over the papers.
You'd think that this sort of thing would send parents to sit down with their kids and tell them about driving safety and even give them the Driver's Ed that the state says they don't need.
Evidently not.
This is a once/twice a month occurance around here and x2 and x3 during prom season and in the summer (underage drinking).

I'm gonna get flamed for this........
it's not the states place to say if or not they need drivers ed. that is something that the parents should be doing. if this poor girl was driving like that at 15, then her parents let her down in so many ways it's almost criminal.
someone mentioned that their parents used to take them in empty parking lots to teach them. that is a good idea. most everyone i know learned from their parents.
my grand pop made my brother and i drive both the 67 mustang, and the 71 station wagon in bad weather, including snow. mom used to use us as chauffeurs, since it gave us real world experience, in all traffic situations, and weather.
that is the kind of stuff missing today. had that girls parents sat with her, and talked a little about responsibility, she'd still be with them.
my brother is a little too easy on his daughter sometimes, but i don't tell him how to parent her. i will however, be sure to make certain that she's getting driving lessons from either him, or me.
all that said, my condolences to the girls family.

Should see what happens to those stopping distances when your driving a 40+ ton truck. At 55mph it takes over 300 yards to stop a loaded semi. That would be using normal braking. Add in the morons that cut in front of you while your stopping and you can see why we get so pissed when you folks dart in front while we are stopping. Do it while we are stopping on a downhill slope and you may not survive.

friend of mine used to drive for werner. he had told me once that if he was fully loaded, that it'd take him about 1/4 mile to stop from 65mph. i never really looked into it though, so i don't know if he was exaggerating though.

Arkansas (as well as many states in the south) has no Driver's Ed requirement and deaths per capita is among the highest vehicle accident rates in the nation.
My home state, Illinois (at least when I was growing up there) has state mandated Driver's Ed for each sophmore to take a 9 week class, in lieu of PE, with both classroom and in-car instruction. It, along with some New England states, is among the least vehicle accident death rate states in the nation. I think California also has mandatory Driver's Ed but someone here on the forums might be able to verify that.
I tend to believe their is a correlation.
When I was a kid there, Illinois had mandatory Driver's Ed for all high school sophmores taught by instructors certified through a state police Driver's Ed instructor's school. Once the course was completed, you were given the "Blue Card" certifying that you had taken, completed, and passed the course. The "Blue Card" had to be presented to the DMV people before you could take your driving tests. The written was not easy, but it wasn't terribly difficult either. The driving test was administered by a non-uniformed state trooper. If you both got in the car and you started the car and put it into gear without making sure the trooper had his seat belt on it was an instant fail. The driving test was extensive and there were 7 pre-announced things that had to be performed and then whatever the trooper decided you should do on top of that. Driving test took at least 20 minutes and many times (including mine) went longer.
Therewas only one instance of a traffic accident by a student at my high school (2,400 students) and it was 2 injured and both non-fatal. Even that got around like wildfire in the halls.
We didn't have texting and cell phones back then but it was well known that messing with the radio was taboo while in motion.
There are way too many being buried that could have easily been prevented my education.
Don't make it mandatory and no one will take it.

i can tell you first hand cap...no exaggeration...and empty can be just as deadly as loaded.
The kids again lol. How about the old guys reading corporate email?
it's statistics dedalos...somewhere in a dark room some pencil pushers have determined that teenagers are more dangerous behind the wheel of any car at any speed, than a corporate executive driving a mercedes at 80mph...and that soccer mom's on yakking on the cell phone with kids in the car are less dangerous than single males between 25 and 35...and that's the information the insurance companies use to determine how much you're going to pay for your car insurance.
if you look at nationwide statistics...teenagers are at the top of the list for incidents involving motor vehicles...*diggin an elbow in your ribs*...and you can't tell me when you were a teenager you drove the way your parents told you to.

ok...now i know for sure.
i've always given big trucks room. when i pass em on the highway, i'm generally about 5 to 8 car lengths in front of them at the closest, before i move back into that lane.

Heres a fun one.
When does a tire have 100% traction?
Another one after you get this one.

Maybe it's just my perception, but it seems that the worst drivers are now driving hybrids... Especially the Prius.
The problem with green cars is that they cost a lot of greenbacks. How many years would one have to drive a Chevy Volt to offset the $40k price (after Federal rebate) as compared to a 40 mpg Hyundai that set you back just $16k? My thought is that folks who buy these things have lousy accountants...
Can anyone explain what is smart about the Smart car? Fuel mileage isn't nearly as good as that of Honda Fit. You can't even call it a golf cart, because a golf cart can carry a golf bag, even two, without chasing the passenger out.
I have observed that a significant segment of the population buy cars like I would buy a refrigerator. Buy it, take it home and forget about it. That's because many people don't particularly enjoy driving. That falls within the concept that people who don't enjoy a task seldom perform the task well. This supports my observation that the Corolla is the number 1 poop-mobile on the public roads, largely because it's purchased as an appliance by folks who don't enjoy driving and want to make their driving as painless as possible. The Camry... It's what Corolla drivers aspire to when they have more disposable income. The ultimate goal is the Lexus ES, a Camry dressed in a Brooks Brothers suit. $40 grand of concentrated dull.
Me, I drive a big, moderately modded Jeep JK Wrangler. The total antithesis of the Corolla/Camry. My wife, however, drives a mid-size Japanese sedan. And the truth is, once in a while, a quiet, soft ride is welcome. My kidneys say "thank you". Of course, I could not leave her car stock. Bilstein struts, aftermarket wheels and 17", 40 series gumball Kumhos elevate the driving experience from dull as Texas dirt to something not far from actual fun. Ultimately, I can only drive it for a short while before my testicles begin to shrivel and it's time to climb up into the JK to restore my sense of being...

Heres a fun one.
When does a tire have 100% traction?
Another one after you get this one.
I would say, when it's not rolling.... Once rolling, there is slippage.

When the vehicle is parked in the driveway.

never - the only way for 100% of the tire (outer surface) to have 100% traction is if it was laid out flat so that all of the outer surface were touching the ground, even then the inner parts of the treads would need to be flat, so it would to be one flat piece of rubber.

I think the concept is maximum available traction....
-
100% traction is when the tire is not moving.
How much of that traction is retained once your start rolling the tire?
-
I'm just here to over-complicate it :)
-
100% traction is when the tire is not moving.
How much of that traction is retained once your start rolling the tire?
Impossible to determine without additional information... It will be substantially less than 100%.
-
In most cases the now moving tire only retains 35% of the original 100%.
-
In most cases the now moving tire only retains 35% of the original 100%.
To determine that, you would need to know:
Material composition, both of the tire and the road surface. You would need to know the weight applied, and any torque applied. You would need to define surface contamination (sand, water, dirt, etc). You would need to know the vector slip angle (always present to some degree), and these are only some of the many factors that will cause deviation from ideal.
-
Very true. This is only meant as an idea of what really happens when your driving.
-
here's something to consider.
there is no such thing as an accident. 99.9999999% of all auto accidents are due to negligence. this makes them not an accident.
I stopped reading the thread here because this is the crux of it. Anyone who has done any defensive driving/riding courses knows this and that driving defensively you can avoid the idiot behaviour of others. There will be the odd occasion where there is nothing you can do or could have done to prevent a bender but they are rare.
-
Last night on the late news it was reported that the OPP pulled over and ticketed a woman on 401 for reading a book while driving. The officer noticed was she had her dome light on, so he began following her. After crossing lanes a few times he pulled her over.
401 is the main highway (multi lane) between Montreal and Detroit.

i'd say only when stopped.
dunno what the numbers are, but it's gonna go down a lot when you're driving.

it's still kinda fun to read it though.

oohh...wait...ya can't beat a senseless person senseless.......

I just came across this website: http://www.ehow.com/how_4844994_around-big-rig-semi-trucks.html (http://www.ehow.com/how_4844994_around-big-rig-semi-trucks.html) - I didn't know half of what it says on there - does it seem like good advice?

Check it out. The most dangerous drivers are middle aged men. It really depends on what one wants to show and and what statistic they want to use to support their idea, but the few I have ran into in the past, name middle aged men as the most dangerous drivers. Some of the reasons I remember were that most kids are careful (with exceptions of coarse) because they are new and they also have the reflexes to react. Old people are not aggressive and they have the experience. Middle aged men are the ones that know everything, are pissed off or stressed out, don't have the reflexes they think they have, don;t have the experience they think they have, are more aggressive, more likely to drive drunk etc etc.
I think the kids stick out because it is so sad that someone so young dies and they make the news more often. However, if you look at every day you will see that most accidents are caused by middle aged men and women. Check out how many of them are also professional drivers.

Pretty good advice on that page Yoss. The following distance is a little large but I can see when driving behind a truck like mine would help. We pick up lots of rocks while in the pits and they get shot out driving down the asphalt. If it comes off the top of my truck I am responsible. If I pick it up with a tire and throw it at you then it is not.
