My mom is looking to get a couple of barebones laptops. This means, basically,
they will have to have windows OS (XP, Vista, whichever is cheapest), and
have enough processing/graphics power for general internet use. 15" screen
preferred. As cheap as we can get.
I'm not looking to buy from other players here in the community, which is why
I originally posted this in the Hardware/software section.
Store-bought (Best-Buy/Walmart) preferred. Shipping to Alaska costs almost as
much as shipping to a third world country.

keep your eyes on buy.com...a lot of good deals get posted on a weekly basis...mostly free shipping.

If all you care about is general internet use, then just get the cheapest laptop they have for sale!
Just don't expect much else out of it.
Even a small $100 netbook would be good enough for general internet use. Once you accept the fact that the laptop won't be good at anything other than browsing and email, you'd be surprised how well the cheap ones might work...

Hows this look?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834215061
Even if it's $50 more shipped that's a very nice price for a 15" due to it's sale price.
EDIT:
To Anchorage, it's only $52 shipping for both laptops. Total would come to $801.53.

Watch out when shopping - there are 'barebones' models that ship without cpu, ram etc. which are purposedly left out for the user to install himself. You're looking for 'basic' not 'barebones'.

Looks great IMHO, will pass it along to the supreme commander and overlord.
Thanks, however still looking.

check this from best buy, the third one down is almost the same price as new egg. but it's from best buy available in alaska, assuming she lives close to one. I would rather buy from best buy/walmar that way if she has any problems she can just return it, instead of mailing back to new egg.
