was talking to my parents about that. I said i wanted to go fight with the rebels. Exact words from my mom "There's the door" :uhoh I don't think its that easy :lol

Just when you thought the US was starting to leave the mire of Middle Eastern conflicts, we've jumped right back in there! The situation is shockingly similar to Iraq- we've got a genocidal dictator in an unstable Southeast Asian location.
What are your thoughts, gentlemen?

While I do think that your assessment of the situation is correct, but Libya is in North Africa.

ouch :uhoh

I think the generals were just sitting around bored one day until one of them suggested, "Hey, let's go plant another dictator in the middle east so the army boys have something to do. We're the U.S. damnit, we gotta be shooting at somebody!"
:bolt:
Honestly though, I don't understand why the U.S. thinks it needs to constantly be screwing around in somebody else's business when we got so much crap to fix here first.

Firstly, and with all due respect, go look at a globe ;)
Secondly, provided there isn't any ground invasion and the rebels in Benghazi can hold up long enough, I think it should turn out quite well. And I don't think this is like Iraq at all - as far as I know, most of the problems in Iraq were/are caused by what were essentially private armies, and also overall tards like Al-Qaeda. I can't see the potential for either of those to develop in Libya - the Libyan people seem to united to let such things develop. Also, perhaps the key difference IMO: I don't think Iraq was ready for a democracy when it was invaded, and I think that is what allowed the entire mess there to get started. In Libya, the events there were started because the people want a democracy, and everything so far indicates that they're willing to work together - both to form a democracy, and to oppose those who oppose a democracy.
Honestly though, I don't understand why the U.S. thinks it needs to constantly be screwing around in somebody else's business when we got so much crap to fix here first.
In case you haven't noticed, the UN resolution was proposed by France, the UK and Lebanon - not the USA. So this is not an American intervention, but more of an international one.
EDIT: I'm pretty sure this is more 'current affairs' than politics...

I'ma buy a ticket to Libya, and i'ma join the rebels! :salute

Screw the politics, this thread should be locked due to the pure stupidity it contains.

Here's some logic ; Don't create a post that will get locked anyway.

Valid points. I just hope it doesn't go much further past enforcing the no fly zone. But I do wish the rebels the best.
-
Yes, let's hope the rebels win.
Then let's hope the ensuing power vacuum isn't filled with extremists.
Instability in the region is a good thing right?
Retarded. :bhead

does libya actually present a major threat if its in turmoil? does it have n00ks or is it rich in oil or have some major export?
i dont mean to sound insinsitive by saying this, but it seems like the u.s only gets involved with rebelling nations when theres something important on the line.
iraq was the possable WMD threat,(And some also argue for oil)
afganistan was of course, for al quida.
if libya doesnt hold any importance to the world then i dont think the U.S will waste resources getting involved. basically if we dont gain something from it, we arent helping.
no offence at all to the libyan people or nation :salute

Light sweet crude oil. Wouldn't hurt you to learn a bit about the different types of crude oil and how they are used and refined and where they come from. Gas prices in the US and what governs them is pretty complicated actually.

I would say a little try diplomacy it would go a long way, as any no fly zone means that the UN (US that doesn’t pay their UN bills ) will have to attack all anti air defenses which is an invasion.
This stuff is almost if not just as stupid as Iraq as in if you are going to stop the killing of innocent people from a war lord then bombing them isn’t the answer for start if you like the rebels then fund then and let them sort it out or it will become the same old story that makes big bucks for the companies that get money from killing and they are not your friend no matter what they hide behind all call themselves.
The main thing to think about is would you like this to happen to you, support from the G10 and the UN to save you because the last 10 times this has played out the biggest death rate is not the warlords it the normal people making a living in hard times.

Al Quida eh? Sums up your grasp of the situation.

Libya is rich in oil. Very much so.
And Gaddafi, despite having supported the western effort against Al-Kaida, is a solid old thug.
He has been bombed by the Brits before, and after that he behaved a bit better (well not always)
His old sins that are known, are the Lockerbie incident, assassination of a young Police officer in London (a Woman) which revealed that the Libyan embassy was an effective arsenal!, and launching missiles at Italy.
In 1989 2 Tomcats from USS JFK had a fight with Libyan Mig-23's.
There are many other incidents, - the bottom line is that the guy is trouble.

Methinks the National (http://ntclibya.org/english/) Transitional (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Transitional_Council) Council has the power bit covered. They've already been effectively recognised by the US, France, Portugal, UK, EU, UN. They also appear to have the support of their own people. I really don't foresee there being a power vacuum there. As for extremists: the rebels so far have been fighting for democracy. The extremists can't really operate without the support of the people, and I very much doubt they'll find much support in Libya atm.
-
Bottom line is its all about stability in the Middle east and now North Africa. Unstable oil producing countries means unstable global market (everything is either shipped and or made with oil). This equals very bad things on top of an already shaky economy. So being the middle man breaking up the fight for our friend (popular global vote for the winner) is in all of our best interest.

I think the Libyan people need to be given priority over oil supplies in this case.
-
Thats the idea. I scratch your back then we get stabilty. Stable oil.
