Title: halftrack weapon loadouts
Post by: Skyguns MKII on March 20, 2011, 12:20:21 AM
Perhaps if we had different weapon load outs for the SDK and M-3 they wouldn’t be such hanger queens. After all they served as platforms for very many different weapons during the war.

i'd say the jeep is in dire need for more variants than the sdk&m3. the only real use for the jeep is delivering fast gv supplies.

Having an M3 Tank destroyer would be BA.

this is the predecessor to that 75mm howitzer mount, purpose built anti-tank version of the m3 (t-48 57mm/su-57):

over 980 built starting october 1942...supposedly none in u.s. service...630 sold to britain and russia...british kept 30 or so then sent the rest to russia...russian version used the more powerful 57mm zis-2 anti-tank gun very successfully...the germans even put captured ones to use.

the 75mm gun, motor carriage m3 was initially used in n.africa was considered obsolete by 1943 due to being ineffective against german armor....but it was used with great success throughout the war by the marines who faced mostly bunkers and thinly armored japanese tanks...

the m3 105mm howitzer mount was also produced, but mainly used as a mobile infantry support weapon not anti-tank operations...

if all 3 gun mounts were available in the hangar...it would be the most versatile gv in the setup...skins for the u.s., russia, britain and even germany could be created for it.

captured skins are not aloud sadly. how much did the extra weight of the 75mm&105mm slow the m3 down tho?

strangely enough...  :headscratch:  the combat weights and speed listed for the m3 with/without 75mm and 105mm gun mounts is listed as the same...20,000lbs combat weight and 45mph max on smooth roads...the 57mm t-48 is listed as 19,000lbs combat weight and 45mph max on smooth roads.

the 75mm carried 59 rounds mixed...the 105 carried 8 rounds...the 57mm t-48 carried 99 rounds.

that's all i could find

not really...don't forget the supplies and the quad 50 mount on the m-16 which is a good aa platform against low level fighters.

i agree with the m16, but i'd say the most dedicated uses it gets is in EW, and thats only because its the only aa platform in there. most ppl will ether run to the ostwind or wirblewind.

The M16 is under rated in my opinion.
You can't really match it's speed and the quad 50s are enough to take down most aircraft.

If it is combat weight, then doesn't that imply fully loaded with ammo/equipment/fuel/troops/etc?  So although the load outs are different, I don't think that it is all that strange they hover around the same weight.

<edited for clunky grammar>

so do scooters!  I know, this wasn't used by the French paras until the '50s but damn it, it would be fun to race around in these.

I only up an m16 if i need to cover a town fast from a nearby vehicle spawn. I wish it had better visibility when in the gun turret; you can't do the mouse trick like you can in the wirble or osty!

Yes but you see that's AA. We could probably get something even more lethal on the sdk if we do our research.
