HTC proves me wrong. Orange is stuck at 100/100 and has been for at least 20 minutes. Blue is at 117/150. Of course, everyone I want to fly with is in Orange.
What possible purpose does this serve? Can anyone really imagine that this improves the game for anyone?
Trust me, Hitech, I stay *despite* the caps. And that goes for every single player I've taked to about it in the arena.
-
not missing much in orange, bish outnumber everyone when i left, knights in blue had numbers, nothing real exciting to leave me in there, this was at 9:15 west coast time

Eliminate the caps. People who want to fly in a big arena with lots of people will fly in Orange. People who want to fly in a smaller arena with fewer people will fly in Blue. Everybody happy, everybody wins.
Hitech has explained why he split the arenas, but I've never seen any decent explanation for why caps are necessary, nor, to my knowledge, have two LW arenas with no caps ever been tried.
But in any case, there's simply no reason for the less populated arena to be capped at 100/100 while the other one has > 100 people. That just makes no sense under any scheme.
-
Caps are a model example of a solution that's worse than the problem itself. The horde still rolls on both arenas with the difference that squadmates can't play with their friends anymore and suffer even more from the horde due to having no wingman.

it worked that way for about 5 weeks after the WWI arena arrived. must have been a mistake I guess, but it worked just great :aok then the dynamic caps were switched on again :(
-
Actually......that is kinda silly.
-
Stop speaking of hordes.
Why?
Because they are part of the game as players that borrowed my times climbing at 15k just for B&Z using, if possible,
zoom function too. Or as players who pick the other ones on the deck.
Hordes is an avoidable part of life as pictards and hotards !
THERE IS ONE WAY ONLY TO REDUCE HORDES FREQUENCY:
targets that can be taken and require just one player !!!
ammo bunkers or hangars are not a such kind of targets.

apparently not, even from your own example.. blue is the place to be. 117 vs 100

it worked if you consider 400+ in one and 20 in the other "working"
what about a nice medium # ?

it wasn't a real choice, since there was no ~200 arena during that time. :P

I'm pretty sure you could have found a couple of times a day when there were exactly 200 in one of the arenas.

Stop speaking of hordes.
I suggest you to do so if you don't understand that hordes are the reason arena caps were introduced in the first place. Too many players at once produce group movements that eat away any chance of individual fights.

I m soooooo sick of flying in the blue arena seems like everywhere I go my field is getting capped. And cmon you know everybody wants to fly in the orange where my country already has a nice cap going on....... if you don't change this soon alot of people are going to get VERY VERY angry and might not play anymore!!! :cry :cry :cry(cough cough) lol

I freely admit that my understanding here is wrong and/or flawed but if I remember/understood the explanation correctly the point of the caps is to get both arenas to populate as quickly as possible. There's a critical mass for the arenas, game experience for a player in general will improve up to a certain point where you start to hit a point of diminishing returns. They may have even tried the uncapped split arenas but I don't remember for sure, but if I recall the point of the cap is to get the 2nd arena to populate as quickly as possible.

There's nothing wrong with the concept of caps. However there are serious downpoints in the implementation:
The second arena starts from nothing and grows slowly.
Why does the second arena grow slowly? Because most players see action on the full side and wait out or login/relog untill they get a slot there
- Or their squad is on the other side so they opt to try logging untill a slot opens on the big side.
- Both cases cause players to not choose the empty side and thereby delay the fill and further create the original problem
-
Caps have nothing to do with hordes. Hordes, like herds, are a successful adaptation to predators.

Hitech has stated that arena populations over a certain size degrade gameplay. We have 2 arenas to limit the max size except for Tuesdays. Titanic Tuesday is an exception for those players who'd like to fly with 500-600 players at once.
As others have stated, since we have 2 arenas, the dynamic caps are in place to populate both arenas. This makes the open arena less likely to be dead.

Personally, I think the current caps setup works pretty well most of the time. I also believe that the recent rash of complaining about the caps is blown waaaaaaaay out of proportion.
Just my opinion.
-

Dingdingding! And why is high population bad? Density of players i.e. rolling hordes which affect gameplay adversely.
-
i haven't seen tt over 360 for a while now...seems all the players who don't like the mass b.s. fest either don't log in, or go to another arena...considering on most other days, "happy hours" both arenas get over 250 players each before 11 p.m. central...it's a pretty good indication that arena caps are working and that more people accept the limits than than don't.
-
Trust me, Hitech, I stay *despite* the caps. And that goes for every single player I've taked to about it in the arena.
I'll go ahead and add a +1 to this statement.
No point arguing about it, I just don't think it's gonna change.
But I agree 100% Loki. The ONLY thing that has ever irritated me to the point that I would leave this game is the idiotic manner that the arena caps sometimes work in.... that being said it is a LOT BETTER since the switch to the LWOH set-up (based on the hours during which I normally able to play)... but prior to that, I can tell you, if there were a decent competitor in the WWII flight sim market otherwise....
-
Dingdingding! And why is high population bad? Density of players i.e. rolling hordes which affect gameplay adversely.
That's your interpretation of why it's bad. I don't believe that is what Hitech was concerned about.

How big a problem it is for an individual player depends on what time of day they typically log on. For some people it's a regular annoying problem.
-

'Most other days' titanic arena would most likely be just as full. Do you see complains on 200 that there are too many players? There _are_ complains about too many players of only one side at one field though. But that can happen with 10 players and 3 sides.
-
'Most other days' titanic arena would most likely be just as full.
i don't think so...i generally log in at 6:30 central every week day and there are usually more people online in all the arenas m,w,th,f than there are on tuesdays...whether that's because the bars aren't running specials or tuesdays are family nights for the squeakers...i don't know but, try tracking it yourself.
prime time tomorrow night you will see somewhere in the neighborhood of 325-375 in tt...the rest of the week days there will be 225-260 in each lw arena with another 60-75 total scattered in the other arenas.
i just checked lwoh and there were 126 on it...
-

I believe you are right here Rip, but even with the caps, the "hordes" persist. I don't think they can be killed off in our current version of AH and the arena CAPS sure aren't fixing the assumed problem.
All the Best...

Wrong. Caps were put in place to try to more quickly populate both LW arenas to roughly the same number of players in each - because without them, the sheep mentality would have everyone trying to get into "the more populated" arena and we'd still have numbers higher than what HT deemed to be the "critical mass" that stifled player subscription growth.

How can you say wrong and then concur with what I just said? Critical mass = too high density of players on one arena = horde when it happens locally.

I said "wrong" because you say the caps were to combat the hordes and critical mass; split arenas was the solution to those. The caps were the mechanism to try to get the numbers in each arena to go up towards the cap number quickly and evenly.

gotta watch those semantics with ripley...there is no telling what way he will twist it so it makes sense only to him.
-
Host: You are now being ported to the other main arena. You will be at your same speed and AGL altitude over a front line friendly base with full ammo and takeoff selected fuel.
this new feature will be added for transitions to after hours and for transitions to blue and orange and titanic teusday main arenas to eliminate all transition problems.
yes I know I have the answers to all lifes problems.

Lol nice try. So you're in effect saying you disagree because you agree again? Split arena was not a solution since everyone still joined by overwhelming choice the larger side. Good that you agreed already on the fact that player density was the gameplay degrading problem.
-

Since you insist on talking like split arenas are the same as arena caps, further discussion of the matter is futile.
-

Since you refuse to understand that split arenas were tried to no avail, then caps were introduced to stop everyone joining the same one, discussion with you is INDEED futile.

Too many players in one arena is a separate problem from hordes. The late war arena was not split because of hordes.
You can define a horde as too many people but it's a semantic similarity, it isn't the same issue.
-

You're right, horde was only one side-effect of too many players. Warps and increased lag was also an issue.
-
I don't like the caps, but I don't have the solution either.
But I don't think the so called horde has anything to do with it.
If the cap for LWO is 100 and there's 33 players from each country in the arena, how they play should have no bearing on the cap.
On the other hand you can't have 80 players from one country and 10 from each of the opposing countries and think it's going to be fun.
On another note:
I'm waiting for someone to explain what a mission is and why we have a mission planner.
If 10 players join a mission and it's considered a horde. Maybe Hi Tech should should do away with the mission planner feature.
And perhaps they should also do away with the radio and text buffer feature to make sure no one trys to organize anything.
Actually Hi Tech has been kind enough to give us these features to immerse the player into the game.
Your assignment (Should you decide to accept.) is to defeat the mission (horde).
Or, you can go duel, pick, GV, furball, bomb somewhere. Hi Tech has provided many options.
My point is, Hi Tech has provided the game with the mission planner as a tool to organize.
If it had not been his intention for players to organize and form groups, he would not have included the mission planner or radio nor would he have have bothered with the formations of squads. So again, in my opinion the so called horde has nothing to do with the arena caps.

You're right, horde was only one side-effect of too many players. Warps and increased lag was also an issue.
IIRC the issue was more of a culture of mutual respect being lost ( stop laughing ) when the numbers got too high and the subscription rate declined and Aces High stopped growing. After splitting the LWA the population grew again.
-
How about, instead of 50 player gaps, change it to 15-20.
Orange 100/100
Blue 109/115
-

You'd still be forced to login/logoff untill you get in orange if that's where your mates are. As far as I see it the problem is threefold: After the split, other side remains mostly empty. After the split, the full side most likely contains 90% of your friends. After the split if you want to land your flight after a successful run, most likely you get locked out of the side your friends are.
-
If you look at the screen capture in the post opening this thread, you will note that the arena with the smaller population is capped (LWO @ 100), while the more populated arena (LWB @ 117) is not capped. This seems inconsistent with the stated purpose of arena caps. I don't like the arena caps, but I understand and respect that they are needed. That being said, as implemented in the opening example, it does seem a bit "idiotic". The recent upping from 70% populated to 80% populated in the uncapped arena before the capped arena is opened, means that LWB will have a population 20% greater that LWO before the cap is lifted from LWO.
Also, I think cap implementation should be delayed when an arena is first opened or reset. As well as ENY restrictions and perk plane cost adjustments should be delayed when an arena first opens. How often do you enter an arena when it first opens with fewer than 15-25 people in it, and the low population countrymen, jump in their discounted perkie planes while the high population country sit in the tower waiting for the ENY to settle down? And when it does, they are met by tempests and 262's as they climb away from their base.

Interesting point that furthermore brings out the benefit of splitting and not closing to start from scratch.

The option to permanently squelch players on 200 would go a long way to solve this. It's perhaps 1% or less that are doing it.

It almost sounds like "I can't stand to be away from you guys. My love is so deep for you all, if I can't be with you in orange, I'll just quit!"
I think they can probably do without ya for an hour or two, and vice versa. Or maybe it really is an unhealthy relationship? :D

The fact of the matter is that there is not supposed to be any talk of politics, anywhere in the game.

I joined a squad to play with them. I play 20-30 hours a month average. So when I'm online I want to join them or else I have really no reason to be in a squad in general. I don't know if you play 100 hours a month or something - I play maybe 2 days a week and then a couple hours at a time typically.

Fair enough. I get sick of my squaddies from time to time, like any other group of people. We are still a squad, just don't have to spend every minute in game "doing something together".
-
I think they should possibly add this...
Since you already come into the country you were playing as last, if that map has a crazy amount of that country it doesn't let you in.....But if your on the small number side...you can until it evens out again.
Like Bish have a horde in Orange right now....no bishop players should be allowed to join the map.
Make it a percentage above everything else...like 10-15%

<S> BELLATOR
-

Caps are a device to balance (spread) the total population in the the arenas ... Caps had nothing to do with the choices players make when then enter an arena. Sooooo, CAPS are not in place to eliminate the horde. Nothing has ever been done to try and balance the country population within the arenas, with the exception of changing the amount of time that players can switch countries ... and that is a choice and not a requirement.
Again, CAPS is not a horde balancer ... it is a population balancer.
-
A horde is a more than enough by many times over group seeking saftey in numbers because they suck. A mission is a much smaller version and fine as long as they dont pull the run for your lives when ANY body shows up to give the slightest resistance. I can think of one person who runs missions that normaly give up every time if Steven Hawkings was there in the tower due to fear of failure.

When Potw knows we have a horde on but want to fly together.....we tell people where we are going and what are intentions are to stur up a fight that will not be lopsided one way or the other.
When I see a base already almost capped then a 10 formation buff raid level it....thats a horde....I see it alot from a certain squad
-
Please explain difference in Horde and Mission.
<S> BELLATOR
A mission is 10-15 using timing, tactics, and skill to accomplish an objective, that with equal skill can be defended against there-by creating a "combat" situation.
A horde is 20-40 people jumping into a late war monsters with no plan other than "flatten EVERYTHING". Hitting a base and destroying everything so that even after they capture it, it is un-usable. A horde CAN NOT be defended against creating large areas of the map that have NO combat in them.
-
DrDea, I agree with that.
But you must agree also that not everybody going to be a #1 Super Stick.
In fact some will always suck. Like me. :D
So yes, I believe they will go for safety in numbers until they feel confident with going it alone. Some spend the first week figuring out not to try and up from a vulched airfield.
After that and with some experience, I feel they’ll move on.
Unfortunately if you’re the default country for the game that all noobs get sent to, you will have a constant supply of replacements. So all I can think of is shoot’em till they learn. And I’m willing to bet that YOU can spot the noob in the mission real quick.

Please explain difference in Horde and Mission.
<S> BELLATOR
they can be one and the same, but in my mind:
horde = excessive number of people and/or firepower that will _guarantee_ a base capture, given the typical defense.
mission = might not even be aimed at a base capture, or if it is, has a _chance of failure_, given the typical defense.
I consider 20 stukas on a basetake much different than 10 sets of lancs and 10 110g's for a basetake. but that's me.

So now what’s the protocol when you launch a 10 member mission and look behind you and see 15 friendlys that didn’t join tagging along?
You didn’t intend a horde but your stuck with it.
And now JunkyII, do you really believe one squad is responsible for all the hordes.
I hope not because I think you’re smarter than that. And I’m not trying to be a smart arse either.
Let’s pick up on the mission I started with above. I now have a horde of 25 planes.
Four members in this group are from the Devil’s Brigade.
The instant one of these four go down or his name shows up in the text buffer.
This mission automatically is declared a v-tard Horde.
You’ve locked yourself into thinking it’s all a v-tard thing. It ain’t.
It’s more of a whole Bish country fighting as one thing.
The v-tards just get all the blame and publicity provide by you and others.
You’re letting your SA down.
Personally I was not thrilled to change to the Bish side myself.
I considered them a bunch of useless noobs too.
But after being here awhile I’ve had a chance to study them some.
And I tell you this.
What they may lack in skill, they bloody well make up with enthusiasm!

:salute BELLATOR
I dont even claim to be a good pilot. Im far from it. My SA blows goats. I try to turn fight in everything I fly. Its a sickness I tell ya. Just have no patience. Some that you talk about will always be hung up on score too and always fly with a horde just to try to keep it real high cause we all know they are trying to make up for a lack of something else...... We all know what that is too dont we  Sure some look to a big group till they learn the ropes, but I see the same people after years of playing doing the same thing. Thats a horde, and the horde mentality.
-
imagine the lightbulb that goes off in peoples heads when they realize what i already know.
the lower population arena has better fights and less horde mentality.
can you fathom why my little horde lemmings?
a short pause for shock and awe to ensue to the uninformed horde lemming masses...
"wow thx Fester! I never knew!"
don't mention it

Tell me that you don't enjoy thinning the horde from time to time though, especially when you want a quick hop when you are short on time?
Find the biggest dar, come in with a K4, roll film, commence putting a virtual foot in virtual asses, and start collecting the whines :aok

Those 4 Devils Brigade members can easily run a mission just with what they have there, bases have been taken by 1 person before.
I feel like people like seeing their missions get numbers in it going above 20...I think there should be a max of 15 in those. 15 aircraft make a huge difference in a fight even if they are the worst players in the game

Not really. I remember one time we were doing a squad get together with about 5 of us and as we took off from the base there was an NOE just starting to hit the dar bar.We had no idea they were coming in at all. We destroyed many many 110's and la7's.The wines were awesome to be sure tho as we were called spys and so on and so on and so on. It was good stuff.
The horde doesnt provide safety. :devil

They do supply an endless stream of targets, though :aok

Personally, I think the current caps setup works pretty well most of the time. I also believe that the recent rash of complaining about the caps is blown waaaaaaaay out of proportion.
Just my opinion.
If the new cap system hasn't affected your game play then of course you’re going to think that its blown way out of proportion. Now say every time you log in the arena shuts down, or you can only play when your choices are to furball at one airfield or furball at another, it gets pretty dang boring.

has affected you in what way?

It certainly didn't deter you from spending ~16 hours playing last tour, either.

Same for this guy...

That is an average of 72 hours/month over the last 3 months. I can see why he has any reason to complain
744 hours/month * 3 months = 2232 hours
If one could play 24/7, one would be paying ~ $0.02/hour to play
Since the average in this case is 72 hours/month , he is paying ~ $0.21/hour for his entertainment.
Not bad considering cable TV is about $30/month for basic service, PPV movies ~$5.00, or a trip to a movie theater ~ $15-20 (sans food, mind you)
There is a word or two that can be used to describe these types of customers.
Whiners or Ingrates.

Whiners or Ingrates.
Take your pick...
You exclude a possibility. There is no reason to think the a whiner cannot ALSO be an ingrate - so it could be a whining ingrate, doubtless with a surplus of available time. That time is also doubtlessly spent on any of the following activities, possibly in combination:
1. whining
2. playing AH
3. passed out on a urine-soaked mattress drooling
4. thumbwrestling with cyclops
5. being ungrateful
And I make no stipulations as to which since I have no desire to be disrespectful to the OP or anyone else or to, for any other reason, take a Skuzzy-stick to the brainbox or a Skuzzbrick in the chops, if you follow.
Nothing to see here...
-
so?
what is your solution? how would your solution affect gameplay?
I would suggest incrementing the cap increase by 10 or 20 each time instead of 50. That way the arenas open and close more frequently giving those the ability to join a specific color more frequently and keeping a better balance in the both arenas.
-
I quit playing and cancelled my subscription because of 16 hours of thinking its not worth my $15.00 any more. I am saying that the new structure of the caps and maps didn't work for me. That doesn't mean that it didn't improve others gameplay. I just don't see to many posts about how great the change was. However I am seeing alot of these types of complaints. I think we need a pie chart on complaints for caps and the people that love it. Lets take a vote.
Mine is for two different maps and two different arenas with 250/250.

know what would REALLY suck?
if hitech woke up one day, and read some of the bs in these boards, decided to throw in the towel, and closed this place and the game down. THAT would suck.
-
I just don't see to many posts about how great the change was.
That's human nature.
How often do you see a customer at a restaurant demand to see the manager to tell him the chef created a superb meal and the wait-staff was very attentive and gave them a very enjoyable dining experience? Not very often. The more likely scene is the customer who had the same meal and waiter, but had to wait 5 minutes to use the bathroom, stomped around yelling at all the guests and demanding that the proprietor make it so he can take a dump on the floor whenever he wants, instead of waiting for the bathroom to become a little less crowded.

Or they stand on the seat and ker-rap on the wall... duhuhuhuhuh.
Thanks for your story, Imadot. The idea of a restaurant in which people take a dump on the floor at will is humorous to me.

It does happen. I do it on the rare occasions it's appropriate.
Except I don't demand the manager to get to the table, I usually email or call afterwards :)

Quoting so it hopefully won't get lost.
THIS IS A CONSTRUCTIVE POST! It might even be a good idea!

Isn't that this:
Small arena cap change.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We have changed the % of players needed from 70% to 80% to raise the cap on the opposite arena.
HiTech
Kinda?
Something I noticed yesterday when I logged on, arenas were capped at 350 and 400 respectively and neither was anywhere near full.
Where were the thank you's from the whiners?

Yep, me too. I won't bring the manager to the table, but I've gone to find him/her and talk in person.
