Kanttori has kindly allowed me to post some teaser shots of his upcoming second version of the Karelia map for AvA and SEA -arenas. The original Karelia debuted with the 2006 Stalin's Fourth -scenario. The map is made mainly for Continuation War -setups but can be used as a general easter front map aswell. This is a totally new version basically made from scratch except for the great 3D-objects made by Blauk. Kanttori worked couple weeks lot of the time literally around the clock to get this done.
Without further ado, here are the shots:
Map coverage:

Soviet airbase near Leningrad:

Kymi-airbase near the coastal city of Kotka:

Soviet airbase in the island of Lavansaari, Gulf of Finland:

Last but certainly not least, the city of Viipuri in all its glory:

Because you won't be able to find a fight.
Because you won't find a gv fight.
Because it's too far between fields.
Because everyone is hoarding somewhere.
Because someone is bombing the gv's.
Because there is no cv action.
What whines did I miss?
:salute Beautiful looking map.
(The whines above do not apply)
What's it look like in lo-res?

Superb, as were his earlier maps.

Looks great! Can't wait for an FSO on this Map! <S>
-
Thank You Bros! :)
This new Karelia map is replacing 10 years ago released FinRus and 5 years ago released Karelia. This new terrain is now 256 x 256 miles, but I am going to large it later to 512 x 512 map. Then it contains the whole historical Finland and Russian frontlines during our Winter War and Continuation War 1939 - 1944. Coming soon out it is now on Skuzzy's table.

Are you kidding? We've got the Baltic map. What more could a man ask.

I can't wait to see this. I loved the original so much it inspired me to make my first, and only, Aces High video years ago.

thanks Kanttori for the hard work! :salute
-
Thats just awesome! I love the attention to detail and the way the coast lines are done looks very realistic! :salute
The only criticism I'd have, and this goes for all the aces high maps is the transitions from land to sea, for some reason in this game the land looks very sharp where it meets the sea.
-
looks fantastic :aok
just goes to show what the game engine is capable of ... which makes me wonder why the MA maps are so basic. :headscratch:
PS I hope you're going to get a few years free sub for all that work :)

WOW! :O

Yes Pervert, I must to remove all 60 000 small ponds and lakes away from this terrain, because there are also any trees near the coastlines. I am waiting that HTC stuff repairs soon that visual problem. Those "cutted" coastlines are not beautiful and they also destroys very succesfully ther feeling of higness and beautiful landscapes. After this weakness is repaired I can update all the real waterways to this terrain of the thousand lakes!
-
(http://www.mydisplayimage.com/aim/premium/hubba_hubba.gif) is all I can say
I just checked out the vid and ... I am drooling more for the terrain .. I vote we get this for MA
-
awesome map :aok
when can we fly on it? offline? would love to fly around on it.

:x BREWS UNITE!!!

Beautiful map Kanttori, thanks for all your hard work.
-
Great map. The detail is beautiful. The different airstips looks are spot on. More maps like this are really needed in the main arena too. Thanks to all the map, terrain, objects, skins, and sounds creators and producers. I can not imagine the amount of time and knowledge required. :rock
-
I would pay for this map.
-
A new sightseeing link, I hope it works: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0NxXaRu3LI4 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0NxXaRu3LI4)
Download it fromthe SEA I now, please! We have there just now a dogfight session, everybody are welcome!
PS. Knights is Finland and Germany, Bishops is Russian. Rooks can not fly, they're Swedish... :rofl

Here are couple pics that show how Kanttori has made those airbases:
Kymi-airbase texture:
Heinjoki-airbase texture:
So the bases aren't figment of Kanttori's imagination but are based on wartime recon/aireal photography. IIRC there are currently 19 unique bases. The most important bases are authentic and then some of them like Suulajärvi base "double" as "general Soviet round airfield" on some less important locations. This due to the texture limitations of the current terraineditor/game engine. The textures are originally done as 1024x1024 and resized to the current rexture size of 512x512. So as soon as AH allows 1024x1024 textures, they are all ready done.
Oh my apologies for expressing an opinion :lol, I will try in future to steer away from constructive criticism in these sorts of threads.
Hi Pervert,
I think there was a slight misunderstanding here. ;) Kanttori wasn't being sarcastic or anything. He was very much agreeing with you!
He had to remove a lot of small lakes/ponds because the current system wont let any trees to crow near water. :( Kanttori, me and you all agree on the coast lines. To have somewhat smooth transitions between water and land it would need those "whole coast long" beaches which in turn wouldn't be very realistic.
-
that really is frickin cool. :aok
that's attention to detail!
-
Amazing, spectacular, and wonderous!
-
Wow. Just wow!!! :O
That has to be the most beautiful map ever made for AH. It is too bad it will never see the light of day in the MA. Too bad it cant somehow be converted.
-
Beautiful!!! <S> Sir!
-
yup Awesome :aok
this would so very cool for a MA map
-
:O :O :O :O :O :O :O :OAMAZING JOB DUDE!!! :O :O :O :O :O :O :O
-
That's awesome! :aok
Any chance of a version being modded for use in the MA?
-

60000!! I thought it had to be a bit of sarcasm to be honest wow thats a lot , I wish HTC would give guys like Kanttori and other map makers the tools to do this more easily was more what I was getting at, apologys for my hasty response or if I have offended anyone :salute
The attention to detail really is on a different planet here, it must have been a real labour of love we are lucky to have such talent in the game! :salute :salute

I'm extremely happy to see this terrain remade. One of my favorite (if not most soul-crushing) moments in all of my AH career was in the Stalin's 4th scenario, rushing past the castle on the bridge toward the maproom in an M3, minutes before the frame was to end...the enemy took a field, breaking our chain of supply, but if I could take the city, we'd have two supply sources and nothing would be lost. Came to a screeching halt with the door swung open, unloaded troops, last one in with 30sec left in the frame...and nothing. Later viewing showed ONE bunker (the scenario's version of town buildings) had been left up because a bomb crater had covered it and made it look destroyed, which means you could have sneezed on it and blown it down. We lost over half our progress in the frame and never got back on track to the designed objectives.
That event was amazing.
-
Holy @#$% nice.
-
Speechless.
-
The first chance to see this map in action is tonight at 3PM EST, when we run the "Sturmovik" special event.
