ive been DYING to ask this, just kept putting it aside. thoughts? critisisms? comments? leave them all here (feel free to flame too)

B-17 if I'm trolling around for some kills (that ball turret is nice to have).
B-24 if I need the extra bomb or two.
I'll take either/or, but prefer the B-17.
-
I prefer sooting at B-24s, they light up easier.
-
B-17 was more relaxing to fly. It was easier to get a nice "greaser" landing, but more difficult to get consistent good landings in. The B-17 sounded better in a fly by and the engines were more reliable...but a bit messier than the PW1830s on the B24.
The B-24 was more satisfying to fly since it was a bit more challenging to handle. Just taxiing the B-24 could reduce you to tears of frustration at times.

B24s are a little bit faster than the B17s. With the same bomb loadout and fuel load, the B24 will both outclimb and outrun the B17. The B24 also has significantly greater range. The drawback is that the B24 has very fragile wings and will break apart from stress and gunfire. Both aircraft are armed to the teeth, with the B24 having a slight edge in defensive armament. This is mainly because the nose and tail turrets have a greater range of motion than the B17.
Which is better? Neither is significantly better than the other, unless you are concerned with range. Both aircraft are easy to catch in fast fighters and will die the same if not defended properly.

It depends on what I am hitting - If I am hitting a base at low / med alt (which I do a lot) I prefer the B-17. The 17 just seems a lot more resistant to damage and I get a lot more fighter kills in it than I ever have in the 24.
If I am CV hunting, I would probably take the B-24 with the 8 x 1000Lb loadout - the extra 2 bombs per plane is worth it.

They both have ball turrets.

B-24 of course.

B-24 of course.
other than the name, any particular reason? btw, personally, from the little online experience i have, B-17, simply because nobody messes with 2-8x.50 cals with the ceek guns. it can also take a fair amount more punishment than the B-24.
-
I like flying the B-17 over the B-24. Yes, the B-24 has a heavier bomb load, but I like the 17s ability to take damage.
-
B24 = very nice,flamable target
-
:rofl i meant flying it... but whatever works for you, Monkey. :bolt:
-
oh ok, not B24. its a nice, flamable target. kinda like first B-29 on here :D
i like the B-17: very mean, non-flamable taget
-
B-17 just for the history it has in my hometown.
-
my father's hometown (Avranches) got an history with the B26...its the plane model that destroyed it in 1944 :bolt:

It's the name. :lol

I prefer the B-17 simply because it's sexier.

IRL the B-24 crews were always worried about ditching in the water. The higher mounted wings coupled with flimsy bomb bay doors made it almost certain that the plane would snap in half during a water landing. A great book that describes how crews felt about the 24 is "Unbroken" by Laura Hillenbrand. I highly recommend it... One of the best books I've ever read.
In the game, I prefer B-24's over the B-17's due to the heavier ord loadout.

The problem was when the bay doors failed the water would slam into the bulkhead at the aft end of the bomb-bay breaking the fuselage. They had a "ditching kit" that was some braces that could be installed if they needed to ditch. I never saw one of the kits, not sure exactly how they worked.
I met a B-24 crewman who flew in the Pacific. He survived two ditchings (one at night during a storm), the ditchings were on back to back missions. He also flew at mission that lasted over 18 hours.

Found this video of a B-24 ditching test: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hlmMpDyITTY

yep. same here.
plus it's the only WW2 plane I've crawled around in during a real-world flight :)

B17 seems it is able to take damage more better than the 24.

:aok i agree :D

Despite the B-17 being the US bomber to get the most glamor:
-- There were more B-24's produced.
-- B-24's dropped more bombs (I think).
-- B-24's served in a wider variety of roles.
-- B-24's had longer range, carried a larger load, and were faster.
So, the B-24 did as much or more but got snubbed in recognition.
I do my part to rectify that by liking it better. :)

But I think the B17 got the most shot at :joystick:

No idea how accurate this is but....a WWII 8th AF veteran said that the B-17 bases were generally closer to London, the media liked to stay in London so when they'd visit a bomber base they would pick one close enough to get back to London for the evening.

B24 catches fire to easy when you get shot so I rarely fly it. The extra bomb load usually is not worth burning to death on the way back home. B17 is much more durable and has enough ord to do most of the things you need to do in AH if your any good at bombing at all.
B24's are also one of my favorite bomber targets when I'm in a fighter because I know I just need to get a few rounds into them to turn them into a comet. :D

yeah... it probably took the most hits, too. and, wasnt the B-17 in military service longer?

Probably. They served into the 50s in the Air/Sea rescue role. Of course Privateers served into the late 50s or early 60s.

from what i understand, they were used for a crazy number of other things for a while too, right? like firefighting, trans-atlantic (?), and a testbed for some new Pratt & Whitney engine, among others?

Both are deathtraps

But that work was as a civilian. Mosquito spraying was a biggee down south.

Yeah for the guy attacking. :P
Seriously if your getting killed off easy in a flight of 17's either A. the guy knows exactly how to be attacking you. B. your getting swarmed. or C your not flying it right or need to work on gunnery.
-
and sometimes a deathtrap is just a deathtrap. Were not far from that in real life too.

or you need gunners in the plane with you..?
