Title: downward spiraling dogfight
Post by: lulu on March 28, 2011, 08:12:48 AM
There is somebody, some instructor may be, that can accurately describe and post film in a plane way how to
have the advantage in a downward spiraling dogfight

Spiral farther out (larger spiral) and off the throttle ..... he who spirals in the shortest distance gets to be in front. :D

A downward spiral is usually the result of giving up altitude for speed to get turn rate. If you turn too tight you'll need to lose more altitude to make up for the extra drag. Try to lose less altitude than the bandit to get an energy advantage. Anticipate the ground approach and try to take advantage of the bandit maneuvering to avoid hitting the ground.

Shuffler if you open up your spiral it's likely the bandit will get angles for a shot.

Probably why I am such a noob. I could see where he may get a shot from his tail gunner position. :)

My move to a larger spiral is to get angles. It could go the other way too. A fight is a constantly ebbing and flowing monster. He who ebbs and flows best gets to be shot down by the next bad guy. :)

Shuffler in a sustained turn fight you recommend giving more turning room to the bandit, as well as yourself,  and cutting throttle which reduces your turn rate. I don't see how that works to your advantage.

lulu, there is not really an answer to your question.

It needs specifics.

But for starters, be at corner speed. Possibly slower, but never faster. If faster, simply raise your nose/ flatten your turn to slow to the correct speed.

After that things start to depend on where your at in the circle relative to each other, plane types, current E states.

Slow.  The slower guy will win.  So, how slow can you get and how slow can your plane handle.  Also, what plane does teh bad guy have? For example, if he is in a Ki84 he can fly very slow and handle very well.  But, if you make him accelerate just enough for the flaps to retract, his plane will fall off of the sky and you will have the advantage.

So, you want to get as slow as possible and try to get above him, but it is not as simple as cutting throttle.  It all depends on what planes you guys are flying.  If you are in the wrong plane and you apply the above, he will get the advantage on you.

Every time you ask a question like that, you have to include the planes you are talking about.  The answer is not always the same.

F4U can be a real surprise in this kind of fight since you can drop your gear at any speed to act as a speed brake. This can enable you to gain upper hand (literally) when the opponent can't slow down the dive fast enough.

Yes, but if he is smart he will set you up knowing what the F4U is most likely going to do.  Especially if he sees your gear down.  WEP on and spiral up (depending on the plane) and the F4U is now the hunted.  There is no single answer to the problem.  You just have to react based on the situation and equipment.

gyrene I've been watching this guys reviews for a few months and he has one for the game.

It's lengthy but the last minute of the video...was just too funny.

I like when he crashed into a tree and he fires the gun while he's on the ground. "Now that's German engineering. The plane is crashed but the gun still works."

 :rofl

oh here is the deal with downward spiral fights...

Its about who travels downward the least. Notice I didn't say slowest, I just said downwards. This is key, there are many ways you can travel downward less than the other guy..
 1) You can reduce your downward travel either by making a wider spiral than the other guy
 2) Don't blow your 'e' and go down, let him go down and you go up, reverse and then pop him and he can't do anything about it.
 3) cut throttle, drop flaps & gear, whatever it takes to fall slower.
 4) the list can go on and on..

Remember the guy above, controls the fight, so the most important thing is to try and be the guy above, and don't go down.

TY guys.

I think that i was able to use these things vs a la7 this night/morning.

In doing this the most difficult thing is to look back and manoeuvring at the same time.

YA KNOW?

what the hell have i been thinking?? i keep trying to keep my turn inside of the cons....even going down. guess this explains a lot.....

:lol  Better watch out or you will find out that the guy inside can get guns on you.  There is no one single solution to that scenario, but he did ask about spiraling down.  Actually, the 38 needs to start the spiral to get the bad guy as slow as possible and then loop him to death.  But again, that is not spiraling down.

>>>>>>There is no one single solution to that scenario<<<<<<<<<<

This is the key. No one solution can be used. It is a constant ebb and flow. You must watch your competitor and react to his moves as well as introducing your own moves.

Stick time..... stick time........ stick time.........

My suggestion is just one of many. You can't use just one.

I was not sure that this downward spiraling works.

Now i think about two golden rules:

1. Know ACM

2. Hide to the opponent your E.

that second one really can be helpful...many times it is this that gets me killed and kills and is something I am now learning...it was something I was told to look at from an early stage but took me a long time to know how to see it within this game without external visuals of the real world.

I welcome when people try to take it lower and lower. I just let them. Then I have alt advantage and they usually just try to fly away

But he was talking about  a co-e downward spiral fight that you are locked into Dred, I think I have been in a few of those with your d9 over the years in a 109. Boils down to who can make the angles for a solution. Plane type is pretty important in that situation.

Ahhh ok. But your not a typical opponent either lol. I often find that you can sometimes break away letting him go lower and if you can extend just a little bit and maintain your alt and smart maneuvering to position. You can often end up with your opponent at an alt disadvantage and soon an E disadvantage as well as most end up pulling too hard on the stick and pizz away what E they gained in trying to get back up to you for the shot.

You and I have been in a few types of engagements.  Not all ending to my liking I might add LOL
